The office door slams inward. Fog spills across the threshold, and the hallway figure steps through with a sidearm shaking in their hand. Dallas stands between the terminal and the intruder, the drive heavy in his grip. Murderbone bares his teeth and lowers into a launch stance.

Elena Vane
Don’t make me shoot you, Fontaine. Hand over the drive.
Her badge is fake, but the panic is real. On the monitor, the service corridor route and review slot glow beside Rowan Mercer Holdings, linking the office to a hidden records chain. This was never just cleanup, it is the proof trail to Mercer’s buried ledger, and whoever hires Elena is trying to bury the whole harbor with it.

Dallas Fontaine
You’re late. Tell me who you’re working for, and maybe you leave breathing.

Elena Vane
If he sees the ledger, Mercer burns me. If I get the drive, I live long enough to run.
Murderbone growls, one step from the lunge. Elena’s pistol drifts toward him, then back to Dallas, measuring the room and failing to find an exit. The evidence in Dallas’s hand, the terminal on the desk, and the hidden review slot together point straight at Rowan Mercer Holdings, the name behind the harbor rot.

“I draw her attention so murderbone can get a flank attack and when he does i tackle her.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Interrogation, rolled +1)

Dallas shifts his weight just enough to pull Elena’s aim off center. His voice stays level, his eyes stay on hers, and that is enough. Her pistol tracks him instead of Murderbone.
Murderbone explodes sideways, a dark blur under the desk light. Elena jerks late, trying to correct, but the dog is already inside her reach.
Dallas drives in with the opening, shoulder-first. Elena loses her balance on the slick floor, her back hitting the wall as her gun hand flails wide.
The pistol skitters into the fog under the desk. Murderbone plants himself between Elena and the door, teeth bared, blocking her from the hallway.

Elena Vane
Don’t, please. I can tell you what Mercer wants, just don’t let him get the drive.
Dallas pins her wrist before she can reach for anything else. The fake badge slips free and flashes once in the terminal glow, landing beside the dropped gun.

Elena Vane
He sent me to pull the evidence before the ledger reaches the auditors. Mercer, Rowan Mercer Holdings, that’s who owns this.

SUCCESS (Superb Psychology, rolled +0)

Dallas Fontaine
Mercer will come for you if he thinks you can talk. Stay with me until this is over, and Jackson sets you up somewhere safe.

Dallas Fontaine
You wait there. I come get you when this breaks.

Elena Vane
You would do that, after all this?

Elena Vane
I was supposed to be a clean handoff. Then I saw the names, and I knew I was already dead if I stayed in Mercer’s pocket.

Elena Vane
He is not bluffing. He is looking at her like a witness, not a liability.

Elena Vane
Jackson Temple... he still answers his phone for you?
Her shoulders loosen a fraction as the panic drains into tired, guarded relief. Dallas gets the call through, and the answer on the other end is short, immediate, and grimly practical.

Elena Vane
All right. I will wait. Just... do not leave me with Mercer’s people again.

“I search the office for the dropped pistol”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Dallas rises from the crouch and sweeps the office floor, eyes tracking the dark seam under the desk where the gun dropped.
He hooks it out with two fingers. The pistol skids through fogged carpet, then stops against his shoe, cold and loaded.

Dallas Fontaine
Full magazine. Safety off.
A second glance catches something else near the terminal, a bent service tag tucked under the fake badge. Mercer does not use cleaners for nothing.

Murderbone
He shifts at the ruined doorway, body rigid, listening to the hallway beyond the fog.

Elena Vane
If they come back, that badge will not save me.
Dallas turns the badge over in his palm. The laminate is fresh, the name printed over an older one, and the office code on the back matches the terminal log.
Outside, footsteps click once in the hall, then stop. A hand brushes the kicked-in doorframe from the other side.
“I look on the terminal to see who is in the hallway”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

Dallas leans in to the terminal, waking the feed instead of the file tree. The screen fractures into three gray hallway angles, all grainy, all moving.
The first camera catches a Mercer operative in a maintenance coat, face half-hidden by the collar, pausing just beyond the office door. He is not rushing. He is watching.

Dallas Fontaine
Maintenance coat. Mercer.
Dallas taps to the next feed. The man at the hall wall slips his hand into his pocket and draws out a slim key ring, then a phone with the screen dark.

Elena Vane
That is not security. That is one of Mercer’s cleaners.
The third angle widens just enough to show a second shape waiting at the stair turn, rigid and listening, as if the first man is buying time for him to enter.
On the terminal, a fresh service tag flashes beside the active feed ID. The badge number matches the hallway shadow, and the hidden office access route lights up in amber.
Murderbone bristles at the ruined doorway, hackles high, while the operative finally lifts his head toward the camera and freezes. Then a fist knocks once against the frame, waiting for Dallas to answer or move.
“I toss Elena the extra gun."don't hesitate if your life is on the line" I reply to the knock "what do you want"”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Dallas flicks the spare pistol across the desk. Elena catches it with both hands, jaw tight, and checks the chamber without looking away from the door.

Dallas Fontaine
Don't hesitate if your life is on the line.

Dallas Fontaine
What do you want?
The fist hits the frame again, slower this time. The hallway feed shows the maintenance coat shift a half-step back, as if listening for a reply.

Elena Vane
If Mercer sent them, they are not here to talk.
Murderbone lowers his head and growls at the gap in the door. The fresh service tag on the terminal glows beside the feed, matching the badge number in the hall.

Mercer Operative
Open up, Fontaine. We only need the drive.
Elena raises the borrowed pistol, sighting past Dallas toward the doorway, while the second figure on the stair turn stays frozen in the grainy monitor glow.
“The image above shows glass on the front wall. Can I see a shadow or determine where the cleaner is to shoot through the glass or door?”
EXCEPTIONAL YES (Likely, rolled 13)

A sudden flicker of the office lights casts a sharp, elongated shadow against the frosted glass of the front wall. Through the translucent pane, the silhouette of the cleaner is unmistakable, his frame hunched as he shifts his weight to peer through the door's edge.

Dallas Fontaine
The glass is thin enough to shatter, and his position is perfectly outlined by the hallway light.
“I double tap the cleaner through the glass”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +4)

Dallas fires twice through the frosted pane. The glass spiders outward, and the cleaner jerks back into the hall with a wet stumble.
The hallway light winks across the breach. A shadowy shape drops out of view, leaving a smear on the door edge and a stunned silence beyond it.

Elena Vane
He is down. Don’t look at me next.
Murderbone surges to the threshold, bristling at the gap, while Dallas keeps the muzzle steady on the opening.
The terminal feed catches a second figure in the stairwell, frozen for half a beat, then backing away from the monitor glow.

Elena Vane
There’s another one. Dallas, they saw the shot.
Outside, hurried footsteps retreat down the hall, but something heavy thuds once against the office wall from the stair side.
“I check the terminal for the second figure”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Dallas leans into the terminal glow and tabs to the hallway feed. The second figure is not at the stairwell anymore, they are moving fast through the lower corridor, then stopping at the side service door.

Dallas Fontaine
They are using the blind side of the building.
The camera grid flickers once, then clears. A route overlay pops up for a maintenance path below the office, with the figure's path marked in jittery steps.

Elena Vane
That is a cleaner route. Mercer uses it when he wants no witnesses.
A key beep sounds from the terminal, and the system tags the moving silhouette with a dock access badge ID. It is not a full name, but it is enough to match to the service roster.

Elena Vane
Wait. I know that badge. It belongs to Mercer security, not the office staff.
Outside the office, the fist taps the frame again, slower this time, as if whoever is there is listening to the screen.

Elena Vane
Dallas... they are checking whether we saw them.
“Knowing their position is there anyway to flank them or get behind them?”
YES (Likely, rolled 42)

Dallas Fontaine
The maintenance path connects to the ventilation shaft behind the desk. If I move through the crawlspace, I can drop down directly behind the service door.

Elena Vane
Look at the floor plan on the terminal, Dallas. The service corridor has a secondary access hatch that leads right into the stairwell landing.
A highlighted route pulses on the screen, showing a clear, unmonitored path that bypasses the main hallway entirely.
“I take Elena through the service hatch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Dallas hooks an arm under Elena’s and yanks her away from the desk. Murderbone slides in front of them, teeth bared toward the shattered door as the terminal glow stripes the floor.

Elena Vane
The hatch is right there, under the desk. If this goes loud, they’ll hear us in the hall.
Dallas drops to one knee, hauls the service hatch open, and catches a cold draft from below. A narrow ladder vanishes into blackness behind the office wall.
He guides Elena through first, then follows, his coat brushing the frame. Murderbone springs down after them, landing soundlessly in the service crawlspace.

Murderbone
Footsteps above. Stay low. Stay together.
Below, the crawlspace opens into a cramped service run, marked by damp concrete and a maintenance light that flickers once, then steadies. The office door above creaks as someone tests it.

Elena Vane
Dallas, there’s a badge reader on the stairwell hatch. If that ID is good, we can cut them off from below.
The terminal feed on the wall shows the dock access badge ID beside a clean route into the stair landing, and fresh shadow passes over the grated floor behind them.
“I check the badge reader at the stairwell hatch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled -2)

Dallas presses the badge reader with two fingers. A green diode blinks once, then the stairwell hatch chirps open on a clean override.

Dallas Fontaine
Valid Mercer access. Not a copied tag.
The hatch seal releases with a soft hiss. Above, bootsteps pause, then shift away from the office door.

Elena Vane
That means they think the route is dead.
Murderbone noses the opening, then angles his head toward the stair landing, waiting for Dallas to move first.

Elena Vane
If Mercer sent the wrong ID, someone wanted us trapped down here.
On the terminal feed, the badge record resolves into a name, a maintenance shift, and a door cycle for the service stair. Fresh shadow crosses the grate again, closer now, and a voice from above calls for the hatch to be checked.
“Can I use the terminal to lock my opponents out of the stairwell and escape that way?”
EXCEPTIONAL YES (Likely, rolled 6)

The terminal screen flickers, highlighting a secondary command line labeled System Override. Dallas realizes the terminal controls not just the hatch, but the entire security grid for the service stairwell, including the magnetic locks on the upper exit doors.

Dallas Fontaine
I can seal the stairwell from the inside, trapping them in the landing while I slip out through the lower maintenance tunnel.

Elena Vane
Dallas, look at the terminal. If you hit that override, the whole stairwell goes into lockdown. They won't be able to follow us, but we have to move before they force the door.
“I use the override and escape through the maintenance tunnel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

Dallas slams the override. The red prompt vanishes, and the stairwell locks with a deep metallic clunk above them.
The hatch begins its cycle shut, then hesitates, holding just wide enough for Dallas and Elena to slip into the maintenance tunnel beyond.

Elena Vane
That shut them out. Move, before they figure out the lower route.
Murderbone darts through first, then Dallas guides Elena after him, the tunnel swallowing the office light behind them.

Dallas Fontaine
The override also killed the stairwell lights. Good. Less to see us by.
A faint mechanical buzz answers from the wall panel, and a status strip flashes the lower tunnel map, with one junction marked in amber.

Elena Vane
There, that mark. It shows a service turn into the freight crawl. If they come through the stairwell, we can still lose them in the grid.
“I take the amber-marked freight crawl”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Dallas angles left at the amber junction, shoulder brushing wet metal as the crawl narrows. The map glow paints the tunnel in weak orange while Murderbone slips ahead, nose working the seam for scent.

Dallas Fontaine
The service turn bends toward freight. Better cover, fewer eyes.
He ducks under a sagging conduit and reaches the marked branch first. The crawl opens into a cleaner maintenance run, with a grated vent on one side and a dark pull cable running toward the office stack.

Elena Vane
This route cuts under the freight floor. If Mercer checks the stairwell, they will miss us.
Murderbone stops at the next bend, teeth bared at the dark, then shifts aside. Beyond him, a faint thump travels through the ducting, and a voice distorts through metal, too muffled to catch words.
Dallas spots a maintenance tag clipped to the pipe, freshly turned, its grease pencil mark pointing deeper into the freight crawl. Someone has used this line recently, and they did not leave in a hurry.

Elena Vane
Wait, listen. They are above us now, but not in the stairwell.
“I listen for who is above us”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Dallas goes still and lets the crawlspace speak. Above, two sets of boots move with different rhythms, one slow and measured, the other quick, impatient, stopping to tap a wall panel. The freight floor is right over them.

Dallas Fontaine
Two men. One checking work, one waiting.
A scrape runs along the duct seam, followed by a low mutter through the metal. The slower voice says, "There. Under the office stack."

Elena Vane
They are not in the stairwell. They are using the freight level.
Murderbone’s ears pin forward. He plants himself under the vent, staring up through the grate as if he can smell the exact shape of the men above. Another heel turn stops almost directly overhead.

Elena Vane
Mercer sent them after the drive, not me. That is worse.
The fresh maintenance tag on the pipe trembles from the vibration, its grease mark now clearly pointing toward the freight crawl ahead. Above, one voice says, "Check the crawl access, then report back."
Dallas reaches for the dark stretch ahead, eyes on the pipe tag, already knowing where the men are heading.
“I crawl toward the freight level”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas folds into the crawl, shoulders brushing damp joists as he slides after the maintenance tag. The tunnel narrows, then opens toward a grated rise that leaks freight-room light in thin bars.

Dallas Fontaine
The tag was a guide, not a warning.
Murderbone eases in behind him, claws soft on the metal. Elena stays back a step, keeping low, her pistol angled down so it will not catch on the pipework.

Elena Vane
If Mercer’s men spot us, this crawl becomes a coffin.
Dallas reaches the freight level seam and peers through the vent slats. Below, a shipping cage sits half-lit, with a clipboard left open on a stack of crate seals.
A cleaner in Mercer gray crosses the floor with a radio at his shoulder, then stops short, head turning toward the vent Dallas occupies.

Mercer Cleaner
Someone’s in the crawl. Check the grate.
Dallas freezes in place, one hand on the slats, while Murderbone lowers into a silent crouch at his flank. Elena draws in a sharp breath behind them as footsteps start for the vent.
“I slip back from the vent and stay hidden”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +1)

Dallas backs off the slats and melts into the crawlspace shadow, shoulders flattening against damp pipework. The freight-room glow narrows to a thin seam above him, and the sound of boots on metal drifts past the vent.

Dallas Fontaine
The cleaner has the vent now.
Murderbone slides in after him, body low and still, guarding the narrow bend with his head canted toward the floor below. Elena stays tucked behind Dallas, breathing shallow, her pistol held close to her chest so it does not scrape the ribs of the tunnel.

Mercer Cleaner
He was right here. Spread out.
A flashlight blade rakes the underside of the grating, then moves on. Dust sifts down through the slats onto Dallas's sleeve while the clipboard on the crate seals below is snatched away.

Elena Vane
If they find this crawl, they find all of us.
Dallas keeps dead still as the footsteps drift wider across the freight floor. The maintenance tag on the pipe trembles once in the draft, pointing deeper into the dark run ahead.
“I listen for the cleaner’s patrol”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Dallas holds his breath and listens past the pipe drip. Footsteps cross the freight floor in a hard loop, stop near the vent, then split, one set moving toward the back racks, the other circling the crate stack.

Dallas Fontaine
Two cleaners. One keeps the floor, one checks the routes.
A radio click crackles below, then a low answer from farther off. The first cleaner mutters about a missed pickup, not a break-in, and the second pauses long enough for Dallas to catch a key jingle and a boot scrape by the side door.

Mercer Cleaner
He moved the folder. Check the west aisle.
Elena tightens her grip on the pistol when she hears that. Murderbone stays frozen, ears locked forward, but his nose tracks the sound of the key ring as it turns away from the vent.

Elena Vane
They are not searching blind. They know the layout.
The cleaner with the radio takes two steps, stops, and drags a crate lid across the floor. From the echo alone, Dallas maps the patrol route, the side door, and the blind strip behind the stacks.

Dallas Fontaine
The blind strip is their gap.
Below them, the radio hiss returns, then the footfalls peel off toward the west aisle, leaving the vent momentarily uncovered and the crawlspace's rear run open.
“I move into the blind strip behind the stacks”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Dallas slips from the vent line and flattens into the blind strip behind the stacks. The freight room opens through the slats in broken bands of light, and the patrol noise fades to a farther corner of the floor.
Murderbone eases after him, shoulders low, nose working the air without a sound. Elena stays tucked close, keeping her pistol down and her breathing shallow.

Dallas Fontaine
The stack shadows cut the floor clean.

Elena Vane
That route puts us behind them. Just do not lose me in here.
Below, a crate wheel rattles past the gap, then stops. A key ring jingles once near the west aisle, and a man’s boot turns toward the stacks, too late to see the movement already buried in shadow.

Mercer Cleaner
Hold up, I heard something back here.
Dallas is already in position, the blind strip holding him and his people just out of the cleaner’s line of sight. The patrol’s attention swings past them, searching the wrong aisle.
“I keep low and watch the west aisle”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Dallas keeps his head below the crate lip and tracks the west aisle through a narrow seam of light. The cleaner’s route is longer than it should be, circling back on the same marks, a deliberate sweep to flush them out.

Dallas Fontaine
He is searching by pattern, not luck.
Murderbone freezes beside him, muzzle angled toward the aisle, waiting for the next sound. Elena clamps her jaw and shifts her weight smaller against the stack, staying out of the light.

Elena Vane
If he gets this close, we are finished.
At the far gap, the cleaner stops. His flashlight beam drifts over a crate tag, then moves on, missing the blind strip by inches. Something metallic clicks against his belt, and he turns away toward the loading side.

Mercer Cleaner
Nothing here. Check the other row.
Dallas spots the reason he missed them, a dangling strip of black plastic snagged on a nail above the stacks, pulling his shadow into the dead space behind it. The blind strip is deeper than the cleaner thinks, and it gives them a clean pocket to move.
“I slip to the loading side”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +1)

Dallas rises into the dark seam between stacks and slides along the loading side, one hand grazing the crate wood for balance. The blind strip swallows him before the cleaner's next pass can catch a shape.
He reaches the end of the row and stops at the corner, where the floor opens toward the loading lane. The cleaner's flashlight sweeps past the far side, ignorant of the move.

Dallas Fontaine
The route is clear from here.
Murderbone stays with Elena in the shadow pocket, body low and still, blocking the narrow gap with his frame. Elena watches Dallas go, breathing shallowly but not moving into the light.

Elena Vane
He made it. Good.
Ahead, the loading side opens into a wider lane of stacked pallets and cable coils. The Mercer cleaner is still turned away, talking to someone farther off in a low, clipped voice.

Mercer Cleaner
Check the loading side now. He has to be in one of these rows.
Dallas has the lane, but the search is tightening around Elena's hiding place as the cleaner starts back toward the stacks.
“I cut toward the cleaner’s blind side”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Dallas slips out from the corner and angles toward the cleaner’s weak side, keeping low behind the pallet shadows.
A loose coil kisses the concrete and clicks once. The cleaner’s voice cuts off mid-sentence.

Mercer Cleaner
There. By the stacks.
The flashlight snaps around. White glare rakes the lane and catches Dallas before he can vanish.

Dallas Fontaine
He saw the movement.
Dallas freezes in a half-step, revolver tight, pinned in the open seam between pallets and cable.

Mercer Cleaner
Hold still, Fontaine. I only need the drive.
“I cut toward the cleaner’s blind side”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dallas slips off the pallet edge and vanishes into the loader’s blind side, boots barely whispering on concrete.
The flashlight beam overshoots him and washes the stacks. The cleaner’s shoulders tighten as he loses the line.

Mercer Cleaner
Move, now. He’s in the dark.
Dallas clears the angle and comes up behind the pallet corner, now shielded by stacked freight and shadow.
Elena stays pressed low behind the crates, breathing hard but still covered. Murderbone rises an inch, ears locked forward.

Mercer Cleaner
He cut the corner. Damn it.
The cleaner shifts his light and body to cover the lane, but Dallas is already out of his direct line.

Mercer Cleaner
Fontaine, show yourself, or I start pulling this stack apart.
“I circle behind the Mercer cleaner”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +3)

Dallas slips into the freight maze and takes the cleaner’s rear quarter, using the pallet edges and stacked cartons to cut the angle.
His shoulder brushes a hanging strap, then clears. The cleaner hears the soft scrape and starts to turn too late.

Dallas Fontaine
He’s blind on the right.
Dallas settles in behind him, revolver low, body tucked tight to the stack. The flashlight beam keeps raking the lane, never finding him.

Mercer Cleaner
Show yourself! I know you’re in here.
Dallas sees it first, a clip-on Mercer badge half torn from the cleaner’s coat seam, with a key fob tucked beside it.

Elena Vane
He got behind him... thank God.
Murderbone holds still in the shadows, ready to spring, while the cleaner’s light jitters over empty concrete and the lane falls into a brief, dangerous silence.
“I grab him in a rear naked choke to take him out quietly”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

Dallas closes the distance and clamps an arm across the cleaner’s throat from behind. The flashlight jerks wild, then drops, clattering under the pallet edge.
The Mercer cleaner claws at Dallas’s forearm, boots skidding on concrete as the air leaves him in a thin, ragged gasp.

Dallas Fontaine
He’s got no room to fight.
Dallas tightens the choke just long enough. The cleaner folds, going limp without a shout, his badge and key fob swinging once before settling against his chest.

Elena Vane
Did you get him? Is he down?
Murderbone edges forward from the shadows, nose low, watching the lane while the fallen cleaner lies still beneath the stacks.

Mercer Cleaner
...who...
“I pocket his badge and key fob”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas slips two fingers under the cleaner’s coat seam and fishes out the badge first, then the key fob, fast and clean. The metal clicks softly against his palm before he tucks both into his pocket.

Dallas Fontaine
Cleaner access. Better than a name.
The unconscious man gives a weak shudder, but stays down. Badge and fob are gone, and his collar hangs open where Dallas worked.

Elena Vane
You got them? Please tell me you got them.
Murderbone noses closer, then snaps his attention toward the lane, ears pricked at a faint scrape somewhere beyond the stacks.

Mercer Cleaner
...stairs... wrong...
A thin beam of light sweeps across the concrete outside the crawlspace mouth, briefly touching the dropped flashlight before sliding away again.

“I slip out and check the light sweep”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas eases out of the crawlspace mouth, low and silent, and takes the first clean angle on the service lane. The sweep is not random. It comes from a handheld lamp moving in a slow, practiced arc near the freight stacks.

Dallas Fontaine
Mobile light. Someone is checking corners, not the room.
A Mercer cleaner stands beyond the pallets, partly masked by stacked crates, the beam steady in one hand and his other hand resting on a radio clipped to his belt. He is watching the crawlspace opening, but not looking straight at it.

Murderbone
Low growl, fixed on the lane.
The unconscious cleaner at Dallas's feet stirs once, then goes still again. Elena stays tucked behind the freight, eyes wide, breathing shallow, waiting for Dallas to signal.

Elena Vane
Can you see who it is?
Dallas catches the edge of a badge on the moving man's coat, enough to read the stamped crest before the lamp turns away. Not a random search. A cleanup check.

Dallas Fontaine
They know someone fell.
The lamp pauses, then starts back toward the crawlspace mouth, a little lower now, as if the man has spotted something on the concrete. Murderbone shifts forward beside Dallas, ready to spring, while Elena stiffens in the dark.
“I stay low and shadow the cleaner”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled -1)

Dallas flattens to the concrete and slides along the shadow line between pallets, matching the cleaner's pace by inches. The lamp beam skims over him once, then drifts away, not quite catching his shape.

Dallas Fontaine
He is sweeping too wide. He has already lost the exact spot.
The Mercer cleaner stops short and angles the light down at the floor where Dallas just was, radio hand tightening. He shifts his weight, turning the search from the crawlspace mouth into the lane itself.

Murderbone
Low, tense warning.
Murderbone freezes, then eases back half a step to keep the dog-black shadow from breaking. Elena presses a palm to her mouth, watching Dallas disappear behind a stack of shrink-wrapped cartons.

Elena Vane
He saw something. He is coming closer.
Dallas reaches the next pallet edge, but a loose strip of plastic snaps against the floor beside his shoe. The cleaner's head turns at once, lamp snapping toward the sound, and his free hand comes off the radio.
The search pattern collapses into a direct sweep toward Dallas's hiding line, and the lane is suddenly too bright to shadow cleanly.
“I lunge at the lamp-bearer”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dallas explodes off the concrete and crashes into the lamp-bearer’s side, driving him off balance before the beam can settle on the crawlspace mouth.
The cleaner slams into a stack of cartons. His flashlight skitters across the floor, and his radio arm pins uselessly beneath Dallas's weight.

Mercer Cleaner
Not the badge man...
“I drag him deeper into cover”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Dallas hauls the cleaner by the collar and belt, dragging him backward into the darker pocket beneath the stacks. The beam from the fallen lamp drifts away from the crawlspace mouth, leaving only a thin spill of light on the concrete.
The cleaner’s boots scrape furrows in dust as Dallas wedges him behind a crate brace, where the overhead shadows swallow most of his outline. Murderbone shifts with him, blocking the lane with a low, ready stance.

Mercer Cleaner
He dragged me under here... he’s got the badge...
Elena presses deeper into cover, eyes fixed on the lane. The skewed lamp beam now catches only the cleaner’s wrist and the badge clipped there, half-hidden by Dallas’s grip.

Dallas Fontaine
He is out of the light. The badge is still on him.

Elena Vane
If they saw that strike, they know we are here.
Above them, footsteps pause somewhere over the freight floor, then shift closer to the crawlspace access. Dallas keeps the unconscious cleaner pinned in shadow as the searching light begins to sweep back toward their lane.
“I search him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)
Dallas gets both hands on the cleaner’s jacket and works the pockets fast, careful and methodical. A stamped access badge comes free first, then a slim key fob and a folded receipt stub damp with sweat.

Dallas Fontaine
Harbor Unit issue. Not a random cleaner.
He turns the man’s wrist and finds a fresh ink mark under the cuff, a service route number pressed into the skin. Tucked behind the badge is a torn strip from a maintenance manifest, listing the freight lane and the crawlspace hatch.

Elena Vane
That route goes straight to the office stack.
Murderbone shifts one step wider, covering the lane as the light above them sweeps past and misses the pocket entirely. The cleaner stays limp in shadow, breathing shallow, his coat now stripped of anything useful.
Dallas finds one last item, a waxed matchbook with a marina number scribbled inside the cover. It is not an ordinary supply note, it is a contact marker.

Elena Vane
That number, I know it. It is one of Mercer’s call-ins.
Above them, the footsteps stop directly over the access point, then a hand raps once on the grate. A voice from the freight floor calls down, calm and searching, asking who is moving under the stacks.

“I listen to the voice at the grate”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)
Dallas goes still and lets the voice carry through the metal. The words are clipped, familiar with the building, and not Mercer security. It is a courier, low and wary, asking if the cleaner below is dead yet.

Dallas Fontaine
Courier. Not a search team.

Unknown Mercer Courier
If you can hear me, keep that door shut above. Mercer is sending people to collect the route tag, and they are not checking names first.
A second voice leaks in behind him, farther back on the freight floor, sharper and impatient. The courier flinches at it, then lowers his voice until it barely reaches the grate.

Unknown Mercer Courier
There is a woman with the auditors' list. She saw your badge. If she gets to the stacks, this crawlspace gets sealed from the outside.

Unknown Mercer Courier
Listen, Fontaine. I can point you to the office hatch, but you have to move now.
“I keep the door shut and move for the office hatch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas eases the hatch cover down with one hand and slides into the service run, moving low through the narrow metal throat. Murderbone pads after him, silent as soot, while Elena stays tucked behind the crates and watches the opening they leave behind.
The crawl bends toward the office hatch, and the office light leaks in thin bars through a seam ahead. Dallas catches a fresh scuff on the metal wall, a route tag scraped off in a hurry, and follows it without breaking stride.

Dallas Fontaine
Office hatch is ahead. Keep it shut behind us.

Unknown Mercer Courier
Good. Then move before the cleaners realize I pointed you this way.
Murderbone slips in front, shoulders brushing the crawl walls, and Dallas sees the office hatch from below, its latch already half-jimmied from inside. Dust drifts down around it like ash.

Elena Vane
If that hatch opens, I can reach the office on your signal.
Above them, boots cross the freight floor and stop. The courier goes quiet at once, listening. Dallas has the hatch, the route, and the first clean angle back into the office.
“I slip through the office hatch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas folds into the hatch and drops through the opening without a scrape. The jimmied latch swings once behind him, then settles as he catches the frame and eases himself down into the office space below.
He lands in a crouch behind the desk, one hand already on the edge of cover. The office above is dim and empty, but the terminal glow paints the underside of the desk in cold blue bars.
Murderbone ghosts through after him, claws ticking once on metal before he goes still by the hatch. Elena stays below in the crawl, her breathing quiet behind the crates.

Dallas Fontaine
The hatch opens into the blind side of the room.
Dust sifts from the grate overhead as footsteps pass somewhere beyond the office wall. Dallas spots the abandoned flashlight left in the lane and the half-finished work on the latch, a clean sign that someone else has already been here.

Elena Vane
If the cleaners come back, I can move when you signal.
Dallas steadies himself under the desk, with the office hatch now open behind him and the route into the room secured. Above, the footsteps stop again, as if someone has heard the shift in the floor.
“I check the office for Mercer records”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Dallas moves on the nearest filing cabinet instead of the room, easing one drawer open with two fingers. Inside, Mercer transfer slips sit under a thin layer of dust, stacked by date and clipped to coded route sheets.

Dallas Fontaine
The drawer was used recently.
He slides the top sheet free. It names Pier Nine, cross-references the freight office, and carries the same initials he has seen on the cleanup trail.

Elena Vane
That is not clerical storage. That is a running list.
Murderbone stays by the open hatch, ears forward, as Dallas checks the terminal table and finds a second stack hidden beneath a blotter. A keycard sleeve, a dock tally copy, and a folded memo with Mercer Holdings letterhead are tucked together.
The memo mentions an after-hours pickup, then a name scratched so hard it tears the paper. Whoever wrote it was trying to erase one final recipient.

Elena Vane
If Mercer sees that folder missing, they will know someone is inside.
Above them, a soft scrape moves along the office side of the wall, then stops at the hatch. Dallas has the records, but the next knock is already deciding whether he gets to leave with them.
“Is the hidden recipient still in the office?”
EXCEPTIONAL YES (Likely, rolled 8)

A shadow shifts against the frosted glass of the office door, and the silhouette of a man standing perfectly still emerges. He is not a cleaner, but someone waiting with the patience of a predator, his hand resting on the heavy brass handle of the inner office door.

Dallas Fontaine
He was here the whole time, watching from the inner room.

The Hidden Recipient
You have the ledger, Detective. I suggest you leave it on the desk and walk back into that hole before I decide to close it for you.
“I aim my revolver at the hidden recipient”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas raises the revolver in one smooth motion, sights locked on the hidden recipient’s chest. The man’s smile thins, but he does not move away from the doorway.

Dallas Fontaine
He is where the light can catch him.

The Hidden Recipient
Careful, Detective. That ledger is worth more than your pride.
Dallas’s aim settles harder, the muzzle steady as a nail. The recipient’s hand eases off the brass handle, fingers splaying where Dallas can see them.
A low growl rolls out from the shadows by the threshold, warning enough to freeze the hall outside.

Elena Vane
Dallas... there are footsteps out there.
The hidden recipient glances past Dallas, and for the first time his composure slips. A second shadow brushes the frosted glass behind him, then stops.

The Hidden Recipient
You have one clean chance. Put the gun down, and I keep them from coming in.
“I tell Elena to cover the hall and i shoot the hidden recipient”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled -1)

Dallas Fontaine
Elena, cover the hall.
Dallas fires once. The round punches through the hidden recipient’s chest, and the man jerks back from the doorway as if yanked by a wire.

The Hidden Recipient
Hhk... no...
His shoulder slams the frame. The brass handle snaps down under his palm, and he folds sideways out of the light.

Elena Vane
He’s down. I’ve got the hall.
Murderbone surges into the gap at the threshold, teeth bared toward the corridor, forcing the shadow outside to stop short.
Elena rises from the crawlspace hatch and angles herself toward the sound outside, pistol up, breath tight, eyes fixed on the frosted glass.
The wounded recipient slides lower against the doorjamb, leaving a dark smear on the panel. Beyond him, the second shadow hesitates, then shifts back from the glass.
“I cover the hall and press toward the doorway”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas advances to the threshold, revolver steady, and takes the hallway in a hard, narrow lane of fire. The frosted glass blurs the shape outside, but not the retreating boots beyond it.

Dallas Fontaine
The corridor is clear enough to hold.
Murderbone slides aside just enough to open Dallas's angle, then plants himself again at the gap. Elena keeps her pistol trained past his shoulder, breathing shallowly from the hatch.

Elena Vane
One more shadow just moved off the glass. I don't think they're alone.
Dallas catches a glimpse of a fresh smear on the doorframe, then the edge of a badge card half-hidden in the hall, dropped in the scuffle and stamped with Mercer security colors.
From somewhere down the corridor, a radio crackles once, then cuts dead. The office lights flicker, and the figure beyond the glass keeps backing away instead of charging.
Murderbone growls low at the opening, fixed on the hall.

Elena Vane
Dallas, if they come back, they come back with company.
“I grab the Mercer badge card”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dallas hooks two fingers under the Mercer badge card and snatches it off the floor in one clean motion. The laminate comes up slick with blood, the security colors smeared but readable.

Dallas Fontaine
Mercer security.
He turns the card over. A clipped barcode and a stairwell access stripe sit beside a partial name, enough to trace, not enough to trust.

Elena Vane
That badge is fresh. They were here, and they still might be.
Murderbone keeps his body wedged in the doorway, hackles up, while the corridor light gutters once more and a second shape briefly crosses the frosted glass beyond the blood smear.

Elena Vane
Dallas, do you want me on the hatch or on the hall?
+ New Item Acquired
Mercer badge card
“I check the stairwell access stripe”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +2)

Dallas tilts the badge under the office lamp and traces the stairwell stripe with his thumb. The laminate is scuffed in a way that matches a magnetic swipe path, not a random mark.

Dallas Fontaine
It is a coded access lane, not an ID strip.
He angles it toward the terminal glow, and the barcode resolves against the screen’s reflection, a valid maintenance stamp tied to the service stairs.
The number beneath it clicks into place. Same floor family as the hatch controls, different route, same security net.

Elena Vane
That gets us the stairwell?
Murderbone shifts his weight in the doorway, growling once as the shadow beyond the frosted glass stops moving. Dallas folds the badge shut, already reading the pattern off the plastic.

Elena Vane
If that code opens the stairs, say it now. I can move.
“I open the stairwell and listen first”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Dallas slides the badge into the stairwell lock and twists. The latch gives with a soft, obedient click, and the door eases inward just enough to spill a thin slice of colder air into the office.
He stops before crossing the threshold, head tilted. From inside comes a low mechanical hum, a distant drip, and no footsteps.

Dallas Fontaine
The stairwell is active, but empty right now.

Elena Vane
Is it clear?
Murderbone holds at the doorway, hackles tight, staring into the dim gap like he expects the dark to blink back.
Dallas catches the smell of damp concrete and old cigarette smoke, fresher than the office air. Someone has passed through recently, and not long ago.

Elena Vane
If Mercer’s people come back, I need that stair open now.
“I step into the stairwell and check it”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

Dallas slips through the stairwell door, one hand on the frame, the other ready. The landing is narrow, stained with damp and old boot grit.

Dallas Fontaine
Fresh tracks. Two sets, maybe three.
He angles his head toward the concrete wall. The hum comes from below, mixed with a faint scrape, like someone dragging metal over paint.
A dropped cigarette curls in the corner, still warm enough to sting the air. The ash is scattered by a quick turn of shoes.
Dallas takes in the stair rail, the smeared handprint on it, and the half-open service door on the lower landing. Someone moved fast, and they were listening.

Elena Vane
Well?
From the office behind him, Elena stays near cover while Murderbone holds the threshold, rigid and silent. Dallas finds the stairwell clear for the moment, and the next footstep below answers him before anyone speaks.
“I go down to the lower landing”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas goes down one step at a time, silent as the dust. The lower landing opens under him, closer to the half-open service door and the smell of cold cigarettes.

Dallas Fontaine
Boot prints. Recent. One set turned back.
He reaches the landing cleanly, one hand brushing the rail. The smeared handprint sits fresh in the grime, and the lower door hangs ajar just enough to show darkness beyond.

Elena Vane
Dallas...?
Murderbone stays above, a fixed shadow at the threshold. Elena leans out from the office above, watching the landing without leaving cover.
From below the half-open door, a soft scrape answers, then stops. Something, or someone, has heard him arrive.

Elena Vane
Tell me if it is clear.
“I tell Elena and murderbone move to my point and i listen and peek through the door without opening it yet.”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Dallas lifts two fingers. Elena comes down the stairs without a word, and Murderbone pads up from the threshold to his side. The three of them bunch at the lower landing, all breathing the same stale air.

Dallas Fontaine
Move here. Quiet.
They obey. Dallas angles his shoulder beside the half-open service door and listens. The scrape returns, softer now, then a tiny click, like plastic touching metal.

Dallas Fontaine
The door is not empty. Someone is holding still on the other side.
He leans in and peers through the narrow gap without touching the door. A dim corridor shows a mop bucket, a torn cable sleeve, and fresh shoe scuffs leading away from the stairwell.

Elena Vane
Do you see anybody?
Murderbone lowers his head and sniffs the seam, hackles tight but silent. Dallas catches a flicker of movement farther down the corridor, just past the edge of the weak light.
A man’s voice, low and rough, drifts back through the crack. "If you’re coming through that door, make it fast."
“Weapon up i use tactical pieing to check behind the door.”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Dallas rises just enough to angle his revolver past the door edge, then eases it back, slicing the corridor into thin, readable pieces. The mop bucket is empty. The torn cable sleeve has been dragged recently, and a wet heel mark points deeper in.

Dallas Fontaine
Clear lane. One man, maybe more, farther back.
He shifts the door a fraction wider with the barrel, not enough to bang it. A utility alcove comes into view, with stacked rags, a flashlight on the floor, and a fresh smear of dirt on the baseboard.

Elena Vane
Is it just him?
Murderbone stays low at Dallas’s knee, then gives one short growl toward the corridor bend. Dallas catches the shape of a shoulder shadow in the weak light, set back and waiting, not charging.

Mercer Operative
Don’t play brave. I only need the drive and I walk away.
Dallas finishes the pie, revealing the full corner and the man pinned behind it, half-hidden by a janitor cart. Beside the cart lies a Mercer badge clipped to a coat pocket, and a second set of boot prints crossing toward the freight exit.
“I say "I'm not brave, Smith and Wesson is" i shoot him and cover the corner.”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +4)

Dallas Fontaine
I'm not brave, Smith and Wesson is.
The revolver cracks once in the narrow corridor. The Mercer operative jerks backward behind the corner, drops out of sight, and the flashlight skitters across the floor, spinning light over the baseboard.
Dallas drives forward with the gun still trained, taking the corner in control. The janitor cart hides half the man, but not the blood spreading on his sleeve or the Mercer badge flashing against his coat.

Murderbone
Low growl, ready to spring if the body moves.

Elena Vane
He is down. Dallas, tell me he is down.
The corridor beyond the cart opens into a service run cluttered with rags and damp footprints. The second boot trail is still fresh, leading hard toward the freight exit.

Dallas Fontaine
The left turn is cleaner than the right. Someone left in a hurry.
Elena stays on the stair landing, pistol raised, while Murderbone holds the angle at Dallas’s side. Down the hall, something metallic bumps once against the wall, then goes still.
“I cover Elena while we clear the corridor”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

Dallas eases back from the corner, keeping his revolver high while he edges Elena out of the landing. Murderbone stays low at his heel, shoulder to the corridor, as the flashlight glow dies against the wall.

Dallas Fontaine
The boot trail goes straight. No hesitation.
Elena slips off the stair landing and into the service run, pistol up with both hands. Dallas shadows her movement, using his body to cover the open angle while the janitor cart drifts behind them.

Elena Vane
I have the lane. Keep moving.
They pass the blood smear and the dropped flashlight. Beyond it, the corridor opens wider, and the fresh prints split toward a freight exit marked by scuffed paint and a hanging chain curtain.

Murderbone
Low rumble, scenting the hall ahead.
Dallas reaches the junction first, checks the blind side, and finds it empty except for a Mercer badge half-kicked under the baseboard. Ahead, the freight exit stands ajar, and something metallic taps once from inside.

Elena Vane
Dallas... do we go through, or hold here?
“I move stealtily and check the chain curtain first”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Dallas slips forward without sound, taking the chain curtain at an angle. The metal links hang slick with grime, parted just enough for him to study the gap beyond.

Dallas Fontaine
The curtain is newer than the frame.
He parts the links with two fingers and finds a sliver of the freight room, dim and breathing with stale air. A faint scrape answers from inside, then stops.

Elena Vane
Can you see anyone in there?
Dallas keeps low at the curtain edge, peering through the gap. Inside, a collapsed hand truck sits near stacked crates, and a shadow moves once across the floor, just out of clear view.
Murderbone freezes beside him, nose working hard at the opening, hackles tight.
The ajar freight exit swings a fraction wider on its own, and something inside taps the chain from the far side, as if testing whether Dallas is alone.
“I move across the freight room. Moving from cover to cover.”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled -1)

Dallas leaves the curtain and cuts low across the freight room, using the crate stack as cover. His first step is clean, then the floor gives a soft, wet creak under the next board.
A flashlight beam snaps on somewhere ahead and drags over the aisle, catching the edge of Dallas's coat. He flattens behind a pallet as dust shakes loose from the crates above him.

Elena Vane
He got seen.
Murderbone shifts to shield the corridor mouth, growling once under his breath. The beam lingers, then doubles back, hunting the line Dallas just crossed.

Dallas Fontaine
The floorboards are louder than they look.
From the far side of the freight room, a Mercer cleaner mutters for the light to sweep lower. Something metallic clicks against a crate, close enough to make the cover feel borrowed.

Elena Vane
Dallas, talk to me. Which side do I cover?
“I move across the freight room. Moving from cover to cover.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas slips out from the pallet and cuts through the next aisle, low and fast, using the crate shadows as moving cover.
The flashlight sweeps where he was, not where he is, and the beam washes over empty boards and dust instead of his coat.
He reaches the freight stack and presses in behind a sagging crate wall, close enough to hear the cleaner’s boots shift direction.
Murderbone stays at the corridor mouth, braced like a door lock, while Elena keeps her pistol up and tracks the light from cover.

Dallas Fontaine
The beam is hunting the old route, not the new one.
A Mercer cleaner mutters from deeper in the room, telling the light to check the far side, and a metallic tap sounds against a crate where Dallas just was.
From his new cover, Dallas spots a service tag stuck under the crate edge, half-hidden in grime, with a handwritten tally number on it.

Elena Vane
Dallas, I can see the lane now. Where do you want me?
“I signal Elena to hold the junction while I check the tag”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Dallas gives Elena a short hand signal toward the junction, then drops to one knee by the crate edge. His fingers pry at the grime-packed service tag, turning it just enough to read the tally.

Dallas Fontaine
Maintenance route, checked twice. Someone is using it as a marker.
The tag is not random. It matches a freight count already written on the ledger copies, and a second notation points toward a lower stair access.

Elena Vane
I hold the junction. If they push in, I stop them.
Elena shifts back into cover, pistol steady, eyes cutting between the freight lane and the corridor mouth. Murderbone stays planted below her line, a quiet threat in the dark.
From deeper in the room, the Mercer cleaner’s flashlight jitters off a stack of pallets, then steadies as boots slow. Somebody has noticed the gap in the search pattern.
Dallas folds the tag free and finds a small grease pencil slash on its underside, fresh enough to have been made tonight.

Elena Vane
Dallas, they are shifting. Tell me where to look next.
“I move to the lower stair access and signal elena to move to me while I provide cover for her.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas rises from the crate shadow and slides low along the freight stack, revolver angled toward the moving light. He gives Elena a sharp, two-finger signal to come, then keeps his body between her and the aisle.
He reaches the lower stair access in one clean move, one hand finding the latch while the other tracks the flashlight sweep. The service tag’s grease mark matches the stair number beside the door.

Dallas Fontaine
Lower access. Same marker.
Elena breaks cover and crosses fast, crouched and tense, while Murderbone shifts to cover the gap behind her. The dog’s head stays fixed on the freight lane.

Elena Vane
I am moving. Keep that light off me.
Dallas catches Elena at the stair door and angles her in behind him. The lower landing is open, dark, and clear for the moment, with a narrow service passage dropping out of sight.
Above them, the Mercer cleaner’s beam stutters past the freight stacks and pauses, then drifts away. In the stairwell, Dallas spots fresh boot dust on the first step and a stub of torn paper jammed in the hinge.

Elena Vane
Dallas, tell me where to look next.
“I take the torn paper and silently move down the stairwell.”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled -1)
Dallas eases the torn paper free from the hinge and folds it into his palm without a sound. The scrap carries a partial room number and a greasy line of pencil marks, enough to point lower, deeper into the service run.

Dallas Fontaine
Lower landing. Someone marked this route recently.
He slips down the first steps, one careful tread at a time, keeping close to the wall where the dark eats the shape of his coat.

Elena Vane
He found something. Good. Just do not leave me here in the open.
Above them, the freight light sweeps once across the stair mouth, then moves on. Murderbone stays planted at the threshold, head low, listening to the aisle.
Halfway down, Dallas catches a faint smear on the railing, fresh enough to still shine. The lower passage below is open, but the foot of the stairs is blocked by a sagging wire shelf turned sideways.

Elena Vane
Dallas, I see movement down there. Do not tell me that is another cleaner.
+ New Item Acquired
Torn paper scrap
“I move down the stairs quietly. I move past the shelf and cover the hallway for Elena to catch up”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled -1)
Dallas lowers another step and tries to ghost past the shelf, but the wire frame groans under its own weight. The sound is small, yet it carries in the shaft like a snapped finger.

Dallas Fontaine
Keep low. Move when I do.
He reaches the blocked landing anyway, shoulder angled to the wall, and eases around the sagging metal. The shelf shifts a few inches, opening a thin gap, then jams against the railing smear.
Dallas gets through, but not cleanly. The shelf scrapes loud enough to erase the quiet he was buying, and the lower hallway now knows exactly where he is.

Elena Vane
He made it, but they heard that.
He turns into the lower hall and sets himself as a shield for the opening behind him, revolver ready, eyes cutting the dark. Elena has a route, but only if the passage stays clear for a second longer.

Elena Vane
Dallas, tell me when to come down.
“I move down the stairs quietly. I move past the shelf and cover the hallway for Elena to catch up”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Dallas eases down one more step, shoulder tight to the rail, keeping his weight off the groaning metal. The lower hall swallows the light ahead of him.

Dallas Fontaine
Come when I wave you down.
He slips past the shelf, but the jammed frame catches his coat and drags the fabric loud against the railing. The hallway beyond answers with a faint scuff of movement.

Dallas Fontaine
The shelf is pinned too hard to shift quietly now.
Dallas plants himself in the lower passage and raises the revolver toward the dark, but the angle is wrong, the rail forcing him half-open to the landing behind him.

Elena Vane
I hear it too. Do I come down, or stay put?
A hard scrape answers from the exposed hall, farther in and just out of sight. Dallas has the line, but the corridor is no longer silent, and Elena is still waiting above.
“I quietly move down the hall moving slowly until Elena catches up”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +2)

Dallas lowers the revolver a fraction and eases farther into the passage, each step measured against the rail’s complaint. The dark corridor yields only a narrow strip of view, enough to show scuffed paint and a thin line of dust disturbed ahead.

Dallas Fontaine
Keep moving. Quietly.
He shifts to the wall side, opening space for Elena to follow behind him. The exposed hall no longer has him square in its mouth, and the scrape from deeper inside fades into a wary stillness.

Elena Vane
He’s making room for me. Good. I can keep up if I don’t rush it.
Dallas finds a clean patch of floor and pauses just long enough to listen. Near the baseboard, a fresh smear catches what little light there is, a dragged mark leading toward the far bend.

Dallas Fontaine
Fresh traffic. Not just one pair of boots.
Elena reaches the lower landing and slips into the hall behind him, pistol tight to her chest, breathing controlled. Murderbone edges after her, silent as shadow, eyes fixed downrange.

Elena Vane
I’m with you. What do you see ahead?
“I keep moving slowly asking Elena if she sees anything”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)
Dallas keeps to the wall, slow and exact, the revolver held low. The corridor opens in his mind before it opens in front of him, and the smear on the floor leads straight toward a half-lit bend ahead.

Dallas Fontaine
You see anything ahead?

Elena Vane
Not clear yet. Just the smear, and that bend. Someone went through here fast.
He angles his head, catching a faint click from deeper in the passage, then a breathy rustle of fabric. Not a rush, not yet, but proof enough that the corridor is occupied.
Dallas eases forward another step and spots something at floor level, a dropped Mercer keycard half-hidden beside the baseboard. Fresh.

Murderbone
Huff. Alert. The smell changes down there.
Murderbone comes level with Elena, rigid and listening, while Elena tightens her grip and glances from Dallas to the bend. The corridor ahead stays dark, but it no longer feels empty.
“I pocket the Mercer keycard and listen”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

Dallas slips the Mercer keycard into his coat pocket without breaking stride. He tilts his head, letting the corridor speak first, and catches two distinct footfalls ahead, one measured, one impatient.

Dallas Fontaine
Two of them. One closer to the bend.
Elena freezes behind him, eyes fixed on the dark turn. Murderbone lowers his muzzle a fraction, then gives a tight, warning growl toward the far wall.

Elena Vane
They are still here. I can hear someone shifting near the stair rail.
A shoe scuffs concrete ahead, then stops. The smear on the floor ends at the bend like a breadcrumb trail somebody forgot to erase.

Murderbone
Low. One voice. Close.
From deeper in the passage, a man murmurs into something small and clipped, maybe a radio. His words are swallowed, but the panic in the cadence is plain enough.
“I tell elana cover the bend I'm going to try and lure one. I pie the corner and take a shot as soon as I can then back up hoping to draw the other one”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +1)

Dallas Fontaine
Elena, cover the bend. I am going to draw one out.
Dallas eases forward, turns his wrist, and slices the corner with the revolver just long enough to find a Mercer cleaner in the gray light. The shot cracks the corridor, and the man jerks backward into the dark.
A radio clatters against the floor somewhere ahead, hissing open on a burst of static. The smear on the concrete now points straight to the bend, as if the corridor itself is being dragged into the chase.
Elena snaps her pistol up and takes the line Dallas leaves behind him, jaw tight, eyes fixed on the turn. Murderbone shifts with her, braced and ready, a low growl pinned in his chest.

Mercer Cleaner
Contact at the lower stair. He is here!
From deeper in the passage, a second set of steps answers the shout, quickening. Dallas backs off with the smoke still drifting from his barrel, and the hidden operative closes in on the noise.
“I keep backing away and draw the second one out”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +4)

Dallas keeps drifting back, shoulders loose, revolver low enough to look like retreat. The dark bend answers with a shuffle, then a man’s breath catching on the radio hiss.
A Mercer cleaner steps into the corridor light, drawn by the sound and the smear of blood. He freezes when he spots Dallas, then takes the bait and starts forward.

Mercer Cleaner
Found him. He is backing off to the stair.

Elena Vane
Dallas, now.
Elena snaps the corner with her pistol and Murderbone launches with her, cutting the cleaner’s angle before he can raise his weapon. The man staggers, trapped between their line and Dallas's retreating frame.

Dallas Fontaine
He takes the corridor exactly where I want him.
Dallas lets the cleaner commit, then shifts aside just enough to open the lane. The Mercer badge at his pocket flashes once in the light as the corridor widens behind him.
The cleaner halts short, suddenly seeing the crossfire. Behind him, the radio spits another burst of static, and more boots are already closing from deeper in the dark.
“I dispatch the cleaner and head to the exit”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -3)
