He draws a leather-bound volume free, and the room chills at once. The black mineral shard in his grasp answers with a faint pulse, slow and steady.

Inside the workroom, Kalazan sets the necromantic volume on a clear slab and lays the black shard beside it. The air feels denser here, threaded with old dust and ink.
