Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan bursts into the main dungeon tunnels as the vault behind him caves in with a grinding roar. Dust rolls low over the flagstones, and the air reeks of ozone, old stone, and buried rot.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Seal it. Now. Keep moving, Kalazan.

A fresh tremor shivers through the corridor, and loose grit patters from the ceiling. Ahead, torchlight wavers on wet stone and a fork in the passage opens into darker service tunnels.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

The seal snaps shut behind us, but the shard is still warm. Something in the walls is answering.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The shard is pulsing.

The obsidian sliver in Kalazan's grip throbs with a dim spiral glow, tugging toward the left-hand tunnel. In the distance, water drips in slow, hollow beats.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

That way. If the stone wants us there, we go armed.

Kalazan leads them down the left passage, past damp roots and carved support beams, toward a colder chamber where something unseen waits beneath the hold.

I cast the torches in to god's sun light

SUCCESS (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled -2)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan thrusts the torches up and pours conjured light through the tunnel. The flames bloom white-gold, then sharpen into a blazing noon-bright radiance that drives back the dungeon gloom.

Runes carved into the damp stone flare into view, hidden seams and old wards catching the light like fresh cuts in metal.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

There, yes, I can see the next layer now. The stone is lying to us.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Good. Hold it there, Kalazan. I want every mark exposed.

The corridor ahead widens into a cold chamber. On the far wall, a sealed archway drinks in the light, but its edges betray a hidden spiral of black iron threads.

Dust lifts off the floor in a trembling ring as the brightness settles. The scent of ozone thins, replaced by the sharp smell of ancient dust and wet stone.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

At last. The seal is showing itself. Open it, and the thing beneath the hold will answer.

Open the sealed archway

I cast it open

SUCCESS (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled +1)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan shapes the opening spell, and the black iron threads in the archway answer at once. They unwind like living wire, peeling away from the seal in a single shuddering bloom of shadow and cold light.

The archway yawns open. Frost spills across the threshold in a thin white skin, and a hidden stair beyond the seal exhales air so old it tastes like stone left in darkness for years.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

It worked. And it was not meant to be opened by brute will alone.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Then we do not waste the opening. Kalazan, your command?

Inside the exposed seam, something glints. A narrow obsidian filament lies tucked behind the lock, and along it hangs a tiny rune shard, still warm, still pulsing.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

That shard is a key, or a warning. Maybe both.

From below, a low vibration rolls up the stairwell, deep enough to rattle dust from the lintel and make the torch flames lean inward toward the dark.

Retrieve the pulsing rune shard

I cast detect trap

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -3)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan releases the spell into the stairwell. Pale lines flare across the stone, and hidden wards answer in sharp, spiderlike threads. The magic resolves into a clear pattern, then snaps tight around a pressure seam just beyond the first turn.

Kalazan

Kalazan

A trap sits on the left wall, keyed to weight and heat.

The ward map blossoms wider in Kalazan’s sight. Two lesser triggers cling to the steps, but the main danger lies ahead, a buried glyph lattice meant to collapse the landing if disturbed wrong.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

There. I see your mark. Give the word, and I clear the steps.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

There is also a dormant curse in the stone, faded but ready. Whoever built this wanted intruders slowed, blinded, and separated.

The seal’s frost crawls higher along the threshold as Kalazan’s detection settles. In the cold glow, a second detail appears, a narrow bypass channel cut into the wall, invisible to ordinary sight and safe to use if the glyph lattice is avoided.

From below, the vibration deepens into a measured pulse, as if something beneath the hold has noticed the spell and is answering it.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

We have the trap laid bare now. What do you want us to do, Kalazan?

I cast disarm trap

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +2)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan twists the disarm spell into the stairwell. The hidden lattice answers with a dry crackle, then folds inward on itself like snapped wire. The left wall trap goes dead, and the steps stop humming underfoot.

A strip of black dust peels from the seam and floats down into Kalazan's palm. Beneath it, a tiny sigil burns once, then reveals a second mark, a ward-claimer's sigil set inside the bypass channel.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Beautiful. The counterward is now exposed. Someone expected a thief, not a mage with taste.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Steps are clean. Say the word, and I take point through the wall channel.

The frost on the threshold shivers, then settles. A cold draft slides up from below, carrying a faint metallic tang and the sense of something old turning in its sleep.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The bypass is safe, and the hidden mark is newly exposed.

The ward map dims as the last threads collapse into harmless sparks. The stairwell is now clear, the trap burned out, and the secret channel lies open beside the sealed steps.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

We move now, before whatever stirred down there decides to answer.

Ward-claimer sigil

I let the dark caster lead

SUCCESS (Great Leadership, rolled +0)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan lets The Dark Arcana Caster take the lead into the bypass channel. They step in first, spell-light sliding over black stone and disturbed frost, while Commander Korth pivots to cover the rear.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Stay behind my trace. The ward is already talking to me, and it does not like being interrupted.

The narrow channel opens wider than it should, shaved smooth by old magic. Half-buried in the wall, a ward-stone sits exposed, its carved edge glimmering with fresh frost and a second, hidden rune beneath the first.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The ward-stone is active, and the hidden rune is now visible.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Clear path. I see no fresh pressure marks. This route was meant to be forgotten.

The Dark Arcana Caster presses two fingers to the rune, then flinches as cold light runs through the seam. A concealed latch clicks open inside the wall, and the bypass passage yields into a lower chamber.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

There. The seal accepted a living hand, not a thief's tool. Someone built this for a sworn opener.

Kalazan follows under the caster's guidance as the chamber breathes out a deeper chill. Beyond the opened seam, a sliver of blue-lit stone reveals a downward hall and a fresh trail of glittering dust, as if something below has just shifted its weight.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

We have our path. Speak now if you want me ahead, or behind.

Behind

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan takes the rear at Korth's signal, letting the commander and the caster slip forward while he shields the passage behind them. The blue light ahead washes over the narrow hall, and the cold draft thickens around the hidden chamber.

A thin drift of glittering dust curls from the lower steps, then settles in a line that points deeper under the hold. The bypass channel is wider here, with old scrape marks in the stone and frost clinging only to the left wall.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Good. Stay back there, Kalazan. If the seal wakes, I want my spellwork in front of it, not between you and it.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Rear covered. Nothing behind us yet, but this tunnel is listening.

Kalazan's shadowed sight catches a faint, second pattern in the dust, a narrow groove where something round and heavy has been moved aside recently. The floor itself stays firm underfoot, but the air above it feels wrong, as if pressure waits on a hidden hinge.

The caster raises one hand, and the blue-lit chamber answers with a low pulse from below. The exposed seam in the wall brightens, revealing a second opening beyond the first, lower and darker than the hall they have reached.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

There. I hear movement under the stone. Kalazan, give the word, and I hold this passage while you look into that lower door.

I put the dark caster in charge

SUCCESS (Great Leadership, rolled +1)

Kalazan

Kalazan

The caster takes point. Korth, keep the rear and the walls.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Understood. I lock this passage and hold.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Good. I will open it, and I will call out anything that moves beneath it.

At Kalazan's order, the formation snaps into place. Korth turns his body toward the tunnel behind them, while the caster steps to the lower seam with both hands raised, gathering blue-black light around their fingers.

The second door answers with a heavy click. Frost flakes from the lower frame, and the darker opening loosens just enough to spill a breath of air that is colder than the dungeon stone.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

There. The layer is awake now. Not broken, awake.

A faint pulse rolls up from below, and a sliver of pale light leaks through the gap, catching on a metal edge inside. The caster leans in, tense but steady, as if listening to a voice no one else can hear.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Kalazan, the lower chamber is open. Say the word if you want me to go first, or keep the caster on it.

Korth stay quiter i say

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault
Kalazan

Kalazan

Stay quieter until I say.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

As you command.

Korth lowers his voice at once. He plants himself by the tunnel wall, sword angled down, and keeps his eyes on the rear passage without a sound.

The Dark Arcana Caster holds at the threshold, one hand still wrapped in dim blue-black sparks. Beneath the gap, the pale light brightens, cold enough to bead frost across the stone lip.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

The layer answers to your will. Something below notices us.

Kalazan leans into the opening. The lower chamber widens into view, a black-metal edge half-buried in rime, engraved with old runes that flare once under his gaze.

A thin breath of silver mist slips out, and with it comes a low, listening hum from deep below the floor. The frost crawls farther along the threshold, as if the seal is waking with intent.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Quiet now. If that thing hears us, it knows we are here.

The caster turns their head sharply toward the dark, then freezes. From inside the lower chamber, something gives a single soft scrape against metal, patient and deliberate.

I cast radiant light at it

FAILURE (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled -3)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan throws the radiant spell into the opening. The light blooms hard, white, and clean, then splinters across the frost as if it strikes polished glass below.

Instead of flooding the chamber, the brightness recoils. A ring of black metal surfaces under the glare, and every rune on it wakes at once.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

It is warded to bite back. Stop forcing light into it!

The threshold shudders. Pale light leaks upward in thin threads, and the frost on the lip cracks into needle fine lines.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Hold fast. Something just moved under the seal.

From below comes a slow metallic turn, like a massive latch shifting inside the dark. The chamber answers with a colder breath, and the runes begin to crawl in a circle around the opening.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

The light showed me the mechanism. There is a second lock, and it is waking.

The glare dies into a pale afterimage on the stone, but the new lock remains visible now, a hidden seam of black iron deeper in the chamber, waiting for a different key.

I cast radiant light at it

SUCCESS (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled +1)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

The revealed seam drinks the last of the flare, then answers with a sharp, black glint. The hidden lock shifts, exposed by Kalazan's light, its iron face etched with tiny ward marks.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

There. That is the true latch. I can read it now.

Cold vapor spills from the opening as the seam loosens with a hard click. Frost on the threshold fractures outward, and a narrow gap shows past the second lock.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Good. Keep that glow steady, Kalazan. I am taking point.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The inner lock is visible now.

The black iron edge draws back by a handspan, revealing a deeper passage lined with pale rune-scratches and a pulse of light from below.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

It noticed the spell, but the light did more than reveal it. It marked the seam for me. I can open the next layer.

The chamber breathes around them, and the hidden lock sits open to study, its wards exposed while something far beneath keeps turning in the dark.

I leave

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan turns from the exposed seam and backs away from the chamber mouth. The cold pulse from below follows him like a held breath, but the passage behind opens wide and clear.

Commander Korth shifts with him, blade angled toward the dark while he keeps his body between Kalazan and the open lock.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

We can move. I have the rear.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Wait. The rune scratches are not just wards. They are directions.

Kalazan leaves the threshold behind. As he retreats, the pale light from the depths washes over the chamber wall and catches a second mark tucked beside the seam, a tiny sigil that had been hidden in shadow.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

A ward-claimer's sign. Someone else has walked this way before us.

Behind them, the chamber answers with one low, deliberate scrape, like something turning to listen as the trio withdraws into the tunnel.

I leave

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan clears the tunnel mouth in a single backward stride, the cold draft dropping off his horns as the vault chamber falls behind him.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Rear secure. Keep moving, Kalazan.

The Dark Arcana Caster snatches one last look at the rune scratches, then turns hard and follows, their fingers still stained with pale spell-light.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

The marks are a trail, not just a seal. Someone built a way down, and they meant it to be found.

Kalazan steps past the hidden ward-claimer's sigil, leaving the chamber's open seam to gape in the cold blue glow.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The sigil is older than the lock.

Behind them, the lower chamber gives another slow scrape, heavy and patient, as if whatever waits below is measuring their retreat.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

It knows we are leaving. Good. Let it hear us go.

I cant anti death cleric wards

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

The cold seam behind Kalazan answers with a thin chime, then the ward-claimer's sigil beside the lock flares white-blue. Frost crawls across the iron, and a black prayer-mark cracks open like glass.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The ward is built to deny death magic.

Kalazan presses his will into the sigil. The anti-death pattern folds inward, not shattered, but rewritten. Its hungry edge drains into the floor stones, harmless at last.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

That is it. The ward is gone, and something underneath is exposed.

A narrow side niche opens with a grinding click. Inside rests a rusted cleric chain, snapped clean, and a bone-white key etched with the same warding script, now dulled and inert.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Good work. I hate when old priests leave traps with instructions.

From deeper below, the patient scraping stops. In the sudden silence, a low breath rolls up the passage, as if the entity beneath the hold has noticed the ward fail.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

Kalazan, the next seal is awake now. Your mark opened more than the lock.

FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Escape from the Collapsing Vault

Kalazan turns toward the stair, but the chamber answers first. The pale cold light in the seam thickens, and the open niche exhales a sting of dust and old incense.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Hold. Something is moving on the other side, and it is not trapped anymore.

The bone-white key shivers in the niche, then slides a finger's width toward the lip as if tugged by an unseen tide. The snapped chain beside it lifts, clinks once, and settles again.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

That key was not a spare. It is a pass marker, and the seal below has learned our shape.

A low pressure rolls up the passage. The tunnel walls sweat frost, and the route back to the upper hold feels suddenly farther than it was a moment ago.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The way up is being watched.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

If you want the stairs, say it now. If you want a cover line, I can make one.

Behind them, the cold seam gives another thin chime, and the passage below answers with a slow, deliberate scrape.

I teleport us up top casting exit dungeon

SUCCESS (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled +1)

Kalazan snaps the exit spell into place. The cold seam folds inward like a closing eye, and the chamber drops away in a surge of dark stone and frost.

For a heartbeat, the three of them hang in black pressure, then the hold rushes back around them. Air, torchwarmth, and the smell of worked stone slam into place.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Top landing. Now. I see it.

Kalazan and his companions reappear in the upper passage near the stair mouth, boots skidding on grit. The snapped chain from below is gone, but a thin line of rime clings to the threshold.

The Dark Arcana Caster

The Dark Arcana Caster

That was not a simple return spell. It grabbed the hold’s nearest ward and rode it upward.

A dull chime answers from deep below, muffled by layers of stone. In Kalazan’s wake, a tiny black shard drops from the air and clinks onto the floor, still warm at its core.

Kalazan

The passage below left a tracer.
