The Stranger in the Corridor

Torchlight flickers over the corridor stone as Kalazan faces the narrow passage to the gatehouse. Commander Korth strides in from the dark, cream fur bright against the soot-stained walls, while the distant hammering of repairs echoes through the fort.

Kalazan

Kalazan

If the heavy crossbows do not hold them, the minotaur line switches to long spears. No hesitation.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Yes, my lord. Spears ready at once, if the walls need them.

Korth bows low, then lifts his head with a hard, alert look. Hooves click sharply on the flagstones as he turns to carry the order down the corridor.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Long spears, then. Smart. Crossbows fail when the target closes fast.

A hooded figure steps out from an alcove near the torch bracket, one hand resting on the wall as if they have been listening for a while. Their voice is rough, and the angle of the hood keeps their face hidden. Korth stiffens, clearly not pleased to find someone else in the passage.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

You were not called for, stranger. Keep to your place or leave the corridor.

The stranger does not move, but the stillness feels sharp, almost predatory, as the torchlight wavers between them and Kalazan.

I tell the korth i also want him to personally drill them in staying behind cover when the gaint throws rocks and countering with crossbows when its not

FAILURE (Great Leadership, rolled -1)

The Stranger in the Corridor

Korth halts mid-turn, jaw tightening. He looks past Kalazan, toward the far end of the corridor, where the hooded stranger stands half in shadow.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Careful. If you drill your people into cover, you admit the giant is the one choosing the fight.

The stranger slides one hand from the wall and tilts their head. From deeper in the corridor, the unseen carpenter stops hammering for a beat, listening.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

My lord gives the orders here. Speak plain, or step away from him.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Plain enough. Rocks break shields, break walls, break pride. Your training should begin after the first impact, not before it.

Korth’s nostrils flare. He does not answer at once, and that silence lands heavier than a shout. The stranger’s hood stays bowed, but their stance edges forward by a single deliberate step.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

If you know the giant’s rhythm, say it now. Otherwise you are wasting Kalazan's time.

The torch beside them gutters hard, throwing both figures into a flicker of orange and black. Somewhere beyond the corridor, another heavy impact thuds through the stone, close enough to shake dust from the joints in the ceiling.

I tell the korth i also want him to personally drill them in staying behind cover when the gaint throws rocks and countering with crossbows when its not

SUCCESS (Great Leadership, rolled +1)

The Stranger in the Corridor
Kalazan

Kalazan

Korth, you drill them yourself. Keep them behind cover when the giant throws stones, then put crossbows on it the moment there is an opening.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

At once, my lord.

Korth snaps a fist to his chest and pivots hard, already barking for shieldmen to move. The corridor tightens into motion as boots scrape stone and the carpenter keeps working without looking up.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

So the fort learns after all. Good. Then you are not blind.

The stranger tilts their hood toward Kalazan, and for a heartbeat the lanternlight catches a pale, sharp smile. A strip of chalk marks shows on the wall beside them, old notches and fresh scratches mixed together.

Kalazan

Kalazan

Those marks are a measuring guide, not random scratches.

Korth slows just long enough to glance back at the wall, then points two guards toward the corridor bend and another pair toward the alcove. His tone stays clipped, but the edge in it sharpens into confidence.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

You heard him. Cover first, crossbows second. If the stones start falling, you live long enough to answer.

The stranger shifts their weight, no longer lounging in the shadow. Ahead, another dull impact rolls through the fort, and dust sifts down in a thin veil between Kalazan and the hooded figure.

I say the damn thing is back and order our handful of clerics and mages support the gate from a safe distance

I say the damn thing is back and order our handful of clerics and mages support the gate from a safe distance

SUCCESS (Great Leadership, rolled +0)

The Stranger in the Corridor

The stranger’s smile fades as Kalazan’s command rings through the corridor. Korth is already turning, and the nearest cleric and two mages are pulled from the rear line at once, sent toward the gate by the safest route.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

You heard him. Clerics, mages, with me. Keep your heads down and your eyes on the stone.

A younger mage staggers as another удар rattles the corridor, but keeps going. The carpenter finally looks up, then ducks back to work as dust shivers from the ceiling seam.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Back, then. I thought you would hide the whole hold from the sky and call it courage.

Kalazan

Kalazan

Not today. The gate gets support from range, and the fort holds.

At Kalazan’s order, the small spellward group breaks into a quick drill, clerics lifting signs of protection while the mages fan out to a safer bend in the corridor. Their line settles into place, facing the direction of the impacts.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

By your word, my lord. If the stones come again, they meet wards first and steel after.

The hooded figure takes one slow step back from the light, then angles their head toward the far end of the hall. Beyond them, another heavy blow booms through the fort, louder than before, and fresh grit rains down in a hard little shower.

I use amplifiers through out the hold to long range cast the gate fortified

FAILURE (Good Conjuration arcana, rolled -1)

The Stranger in the Corridor

Kalazan’s amplifiers flare along the corridor walls, catching inlaid runes and throwing the light forward in a hard, trembling line.

The spell catches the hold itself instead of the gate. Far off, the warded stone answers with a dull, grinding hum, and the corridor windows fog with a pulse of heat.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

My lord, the fort is taking the cast. Not the gate, the channels.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

There. You built your voice into the walls, and the walls are choking on it.

A crack of light snaps through one amplifier ring, then dies. Dust sheets off the ceiling seam and the carpenter curses under his breath without looking up.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The amplification lattice is backfeeding through the corridor runes.

Korth plants himself between Kalazan and the stranger, while the mage line halts in a tense half-circle. Down the hall, the impacts continue, and one of the support sconces gutters out.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

If you want the gate strengthened, stop shouting through your own bones and listen. The old seams are the weak point.

I use amplifiers through out the hold to long range cast the gate fortified

FAILURE (Good Conjuration arcana, rolled -1)

The hum in the walls dies into a low, uneven throb. In its wake, the corridor’s runes flicker with a new pattern, not a defense, but a map of strain spreading through the hold.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

There. That pulse marks the seam-work. Your magic is dragging the fault line wider.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Name your price, stranger, or step back and let my lord work.

The carpenter pauses with one hand on a fresh stone block, then turns his head toward a hairline crack that now crawls along the arch above the corridor.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The spell has traced the weak points instead of sealing them.

From deeper in the fort, a second impact rolls through the floor. This one lands closer, and the hooded stranger’s shoulders tighten with satisfied anticipation.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Your causeway holds. Your gate holds. But that corridor spine will not hold forever. Ask me, and I can show you where to brace.

Korth shifts aside half a step, giving Kalazan room, while dust sifts from the widening crack and a dim draught begins to move through the hall.

I use amplifiers through out the hold to long range cast the gate fortified

SUCCESS (Good Conjuration arcana, rolled +3)

Kalazan spreads his focus through the corridor runes, then outward through the hold. The damaged pulse is caught, twisted, and answered by a deep, warded thrum that rolls from chamber to chamber.

Along the gate and causeway, hidden sigils flare awake. The stone and timber drink in the spell, and the defensive lattice settles into a harder, brighter pattern.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

There it is. Hold fast, every line. The fort is bracing.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Clever. You do learn.

The corridor crack stops creeping. Dust still falls, but the widening strain is arrested, pinned by fresh reinforcement. The draft shifts into a steady, controlled breath.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The gate wards now answer from the far network.

Korth lowers his spear a fraction, watching the stranger instead of the ceiling. The carpenter sets the block back into place, working faster now that the stress has eased.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Your hold can endure with the right hands on it. Mine, if you listen.

The stranger lifts one gloved hand and points deeper into the fort, toward the source of the new impact, as the reinforced wards hum and wait for Kalazan's next command.

I maintain the fortitude buff on the gates area

SUCCESS (Great Conjuration arcana, rolled +1)

The corridor keeps its hard, steadied hush as the ward-net settles into place. The hum in the stone deepens, then smooths out, as if the fort has found its breath again.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

That is a proper brace. Speak, stranger, before I decide you are here to bleed us dry.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

No. I am here because I can hear your walls think. That is rarer than loyalty.

A fresh tremor passes through the arch, but the reinforced runes take it cleanly. The crack holds. The carpenter resumes his work with a sharp tap of stone against mortar.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The fortitude remains active on the gate lattice.

From deeper in the hold, the ward-line answers in a low pulse. The gate wards stay lit, bright and firm, their strength threaded through the corridor spine and out toward the causeway.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

There. That is the shape of power. Not stone alone, but stone chosen, and kept. You should hear what else the mountain has to say.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

One more step, and I put you on the floor. Kalazan, give the word.

I wait for the biggest pause in thuds to drop my cast and bolt for the gate

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Kalazan waits for the next lull, then drops his cast and breaks into a hard run. His boots strike the corridor stones once, twice, and the ward-light skims over him like a bent blade.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Move! Clear the way for Kalazan!

Korth snaps aside with practiced speed, and the hooded stranger turns, startled by the sudden burst of motion. The carpenter flattens himself against the wall as dust rattles from the arch above.

Kalazan reaches the gate in a heartbeat. The warded wood stands intact, but one thin seam beside the frame glows with a hidden pulse, exposed by the stranger's earlier markings.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

So he sees it too. Good.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

At the gate. Good. Now we learn who this wretch serves.

A deeper thud rolls through the hold, then stops short. In the sudden pause, Kalazan's rush has bought a clear advantage, he is at the gate before the next impact can land, and the marked seam gives him a fresh clue to the fort's stress point.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

There it is, Kalazan. Hear that seam sing, and you will know where the mountain is already lying to you.

I rush to the gate and visually assess if the gate gaurds and small caster group need defensive support or if i should go on offense against the hill giant

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

The Stranger in the Corridor

At the gate, Kalazan takes in the line in a single sweep. The warded door holds, the seam beside it pulses, and the small caster group is bracing for impact, not overmatched yet.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The casters can hold. The gate is the problem.

Korth plants himself by the threshold, spear ready, while the strangers' hood tilts toward Kalazan with sharp interest. The carpenter keeps low, hammer frozen in hand.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Give the word, and I put bodies on the seam or hold the line here.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

See it now, Kalazan. The hill giant is testing your stone, not your courage.

Another heavy удар rolls through the corridor. Dust sifts from the arch. The caster group is still active, but their glow is tight and defensive, built to steady the ward-lattice rather than drive anything back.

Kalazan reads the pattern at once. The gate guards need support at the seam, but the casters do not need a full push. What they need is time, and the corridor cannot spare a long fight here.

Kalazan snaps the call to fortify the gate, while judging the giant as the greater threat beyond the wall. Korth shifts to cover the seam, and the stranger's posture tightens with pleased anticipation as the next impact gathers somewhere outside.

I get in appropriate range and cast slow at the hill giant

SUCCESS (Great Conjuration arcana, rolled +2)

The Stranger in the Corridor

Kalazan plants his stance in the corridor’s open lane, just beyond the casters. He draws the spell through the ward-lattice and sends it outward, clean and narrow.

The magic finds the hill giant outside the wall. Its motion drags, then thickens, as if the air itself turns to wet clay around its limbs.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

By the horns... it is rooted.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Good. So you can reach beyond your own stone after all.

Outside, the next impact comes late and weak. The corridor steadies instead of shuddering, and dust falls in a thin, harmless veil from the arch.

The faint strain that was pulsing in the seam dulls for a heartbeat, exposed by the spell’s spread. In that lull, Kalazan catches the shape of a second force at work beyond the wall, not the giant alone.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Say the word, and I send archers to finish this while it cannot move.

I say halt to my force and cast a mind to mind speech, asking it why it is attacking our hold

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

The Stranger in the Corridor

Kalazan cuts the spell in place and sends his will outward, not as force but as a call. The corridor stills around him.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Ah. There you are.

The answer does not come through the air. It arrives inside Kalazan's mind, cold and clear, threaded with alien patience.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Because holds like yours grow fat and blind. Someone must teach them fear before they mistake it for safety.

Commander Korth shifts, but holds position, waiting for Kalazan's order. Behind them, the carpenter freezes with a trowel in hand, listening.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Your walls are not the target, Kalazan. Your certainty is.

For a heartbeat, the stranger's hood tilts toward the deeper stone beyond the corridor, as if listening to something that Kalazan cannot yet hear.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Tell me, lord of Red Tide, do you command the noise at your gate, or the hands already inside your house?

I continue to ask the hill giant with a mind to mind cast why its attacking

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +2)

The Stranger in the Corridor

Kalazan lets the mind-call carry farther, past stone and ward, into the root-dark below. The corridor hums once, then grows still.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

So. You listen after all.

The stranger does not move their lips. The voice arrives sharp in Kalazan's skull, and with it comes a wet, earth-deep image of a giant crouched among shattered trees.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

It strikes your gate because it was paid to strike it. It is a spear-point, not the hand.

Commander Korth lowers his spear a fraction, eyes narrowing at the stranger, while the carpenter keeps working with stiff, careful strokes.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Ask the giant why it comes, and you will hear a name. Ask who feeds it, and you may hear yours.

Kalazan

Kalazan

The giant is being driven.

The stranger's hood turns toward the outer wall. Far off, another impact rolls through the fort, closer than before, and dust sifts from the seams above the arch.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Give the word, Kalazan. I can send runners, or put steel in the corridor now.

I go through what the hill giant said

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Stranger in the Corridor
Kalazan

Kalazan

Kalazan threads the giant’s words back through the meeting. A hired blow, a spear-point, a hidden hand. He catches the shape of a lie inside it.

The corridor’s runes shimmer faintly as the answer settles into the stone. Somewhere beyond the walls, the second impact lands hard enough to rattle dust from the arch again.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

Good. You are listening now. The giant only carries the message. The one who pays wants your gate tested, your habits mapped, your confidence counted.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Then name the payer. Or step aside and let me drag it from you by force.

The hooded figure gives a slow tilt of the head, almost amused. Their gloved hand lifts and points, not at the corridor, but toward the deeper stone beneath the hold.

The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger

The name rides lower than the giant knows. Follow the shaking under your feet, Kalazan. That is where the leash begins.

A fresh tremor rolls through the floor. The carpenter freezes mid-stroke, and Korth braces, spear angled toward the stranger as if waiting for the next betrayal.

Commander Korth

Commander Korth

Orders, Kalazan. We move now, or we seal this corridor and hunt on your command.
