The Commander Returns to the Feast

Kalazan emerges from the cold tunnels into the cavernous dining hall. The air here is thick with the scent of roasted root vegetables and spiced ale. A roar of laughter ripples through the room where fifty residents sit at long oak tables, oblivious to the ancient powers stirring beneath their feet.

The Server

The Server

My lord, the feast has been held back for your return. The people grow hungry, but they respect the silence from below. Is it safe to resume the service?

Kalazan

The warmth of this hall is a fragile veneer over the dark foundations.

Kalazan nods toward the serving staff. The Server exhales a breath of relief, her posture relaxing as she prepares to signal the cooks. The tension in the hall begins to dissipate as the residents turn their attention back to their mugs and platters.

I shall tell them the mountain is quiet, Commander. We will feast in your honor tonight.

She dips a shallow bow and hurries toward the kitchens, calling out to the waitstaff. Kalazan stands alone at the edge of the dais, his presence a heavy, silent anchor amidst the rising cheer.

I tell the top in command that i want our casters and clerics leading praying and chanting to the good gods, specifically Aerdrie Faenya and Moradin for helping us before they eat further in the dining hall and thank the creatures that help us

Enough. Before the first bite is taken, I want the lead clerics to command a prayer to Aerdrie Faenya and Moradin. Give thanks for their guidance, and extend that honor to the beasts that guard our foundations.

Kalazan's voice cuts through the rising din like a horn blast. The hall falls into an expectant hush as the clerics rise from their benches, moving to the head of the tables with silver censer in hand.

To the Sky Mother and the Soul Forger, we offer this tribute. May the stone hold, and may the deep protectors find strength in our shared feast.

A soft, golden luminescence ripples across the ceiling beams as the gods acknowledge the invocation. The residents join in, their voices rising in a unified chant that vibrates against the mountain's crust.

The orb will show me the truth behind those shifting shadows.

Kalazan pulls the control orb from his robes. He focuses his will, and the sphere blooms with a sharp, azure clarity.

The projected image spans the hall. It cuts through the forest mist, revealing a Pale Moon scout stalking the treeline near the causeway.

They are scouting the bridge. They know the feast has drawn our attention inward.

Let them watch. They will find the bridge is not as unguarded as they hope.

The scout pauses, its feline ears swiveling toward the fort, then it lets out a low, guttural whistle that signals others hidden in the brush.

Unit 1, to me. Rise and answer the call.

Kalazan raises his staff, the dark wood vibrating with ancient, necromantic resonance. The stone floor of the hall cracks as skeletal warriors pull themselves through the fissures.

He breathes life into the dead with such effortless grace. A king's power indeed.

Twelve armored skeletons stand in perfect formation, their rusted blades catching the ambient light of the hall. They turn as one to face the direction of the gate.

Let them come. Send the dead to the Crag Crimson Rise and let the Pale Moon break themselves against bone before they ever touch our gate.

The necromantic tether holds firm. They will act as my reach in the dark.

With a guttural command, the skeletal warriors begin a rhythmic, silent march toward the entrance. As they cross the threshold, their presence triggers a latent trap in the floor, revealing a hidden compartment of alchemical fire pots intended for intruders.

They march with the precision of a living legion. The Pale Moon scouts have no concept of the trap waiting for them.
