Commander Korth
Seal it faster. Whatever is below is listening.
Korth plants his boot beside the black shard and leans in toward the stair mouth, blade half drawn. Frost crawls thicker across the threshold as the scraping below grows louder.

The Dark Arcana Caster
The seam is fraying. If it opens again, I will not hold it.
The caster drags trembling fingers through the rime, drawing a fresh loop of warding into the cold stone. The mark flickers, then steadies for a heartbeat.

Kalazan
The shard is warm despite the frost.

Commander Korth
Kalazan, decide. We hold this stair, or we fall back and bar it.
A deeper scrape rolls up from below, close enough to shake loose powder from the lintel. The black shard gives off a dim, mean glimmer, as if something beneath the hold answers it.

“I leave to up top”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Kalazan turns from the stair mouth and climbs hard for the upper passage, boots striking wet stone as the cold behind him swells louder.

Commander Korth
Go. I buy you time here.
Korth shifts into the gap, blade raised, shoulders square to the dark. The caster keeps one hand on the ward, jaw tight, eyes never leaving the threshold.
Kalazan reaches the landing above. The corridor air is thinner here, but the frost still snakes after him along the stone seam.

Kalazan
The shard is still feeding the seal.
Below, the stair mouth gives a wet crack of sound, then a hush. The black shard on the floor flashes once, sharp as a blink in a dying fire.

The Dark Arcana Caster
If it is reacting to distance, then the source is linked to the upper hold too.
A thin seam of rime splits across the passage at Kalazan's feet, pointing deeper into the hold. Somewhere above, another passage answers with a dull, ancient pulse.

Ancient iron token
undefined / undefined

The new seam in the floor widens with a dry whisper, and a strip of ancient stone slides aside beneath the frost. From the crack rises a breath of pale dust and a single iron token, spinning end over end before clattering to Kalazan's feet. It bears the mark of Hold Red Tide, but the crest is older, half-erased by time.

Commander Korth
That is not from this hold. Kalazan, someone has been sealing this place from below.

The Dark Arcana Caster
The seal is not failing. It is being unpicked.
A cold draft pushes up through the opening, carrying a second sound, a faint scrape of metal against stone, close now and moving upward. Then the black shard on the floor tips upright by itself, as if listening.
“I cast the death cleric command for off at it”
SUCCESS (Legendary Conjuration arcana, rolled +3)

Kalazan
Off.
The word lands like a seal of iron. Black-blue force snaps out from Kalazan's staff and the upright shard flinches, its thin glow choking down into a brittle ember.
Below the floor, the scraping stops at once. A hard impact follows, then a sullen drag, as if whatever waits beneath has been shoved back by invisible hands.

Commander Korth
It obeys. Good. Keep it there.

The Dark Arcana Caster
That command hooked the thing's will, not the stone. Old magic... and something under it.
The frost seam cracks wider, and a narrow wedge of dark stone lifts free. Under it lies a hidden channel cut into the foundation, lined with stale ash and an older Red Tide sigil, half-scraped away by deliberate hands.

Commander Korth
A concealed passage. Someone in the hold knew this was here.
The draft from below turns warmer for a heartbeat, carrying the smell of dust, old smoke, and buried metal. The black shard remains rigid, pointed straight at the opening like a warning arrow.
“I leave to up top”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Kalazan pulls away from the opening and takes the upper passage, boots scraping over dust as the cold draft falls behind him. The chamber trembles once, then settles into a strained hush.

Commander Korth
I hold here. If it moves, I call it.

The Dark Arcana Caster
Ash, sigil, and a channel in the foundation. This was sealed from the inside.
The stair mouth behind Kalazan exhales a thin ribbon of black frost, but no new force pushes through. The hidden channel remains exposed below, marked by the faded Red Tide sign.

Kalazan
The upper passage is clear.
Ahead, the passage bends toward the hold proper. Lantern light catches on old stone, and a faint grit of ash drifts from the ceiling seam.

Commander Korth
Kalazan, the stair is contained for now. Tell me where you want the next watch.
