Thadeus stays kneeling on the scorched floor, the Peacebringer resting across his knees. Elizabeth closes the last step between them, blood on her mouth, breath shaking in her chest.

Thadeus Jovanović
How was this supposed to end?
Elizabeth does not answer right away. She studies him, then reaches down and grips his jacket with a sudden, decisive pull.

Elizabeth Bathory
Not like this.
She drags him forward and kisses him full on the lips, abrupt and fierce enough to stop the chamber cold. The ruined room, the broken chairs, the ash, all of it falls away for a beat.
When she pulls back, her forehead nearly brushes his. Her hand remains at his collar, but the violence in her posture has softened into something bare and uncertain.

Elizabeth Bathory
I needed one honest moment before we start talking about what comes next.

Escape the courthouse with Marla and Elias
“Was there good intention in that kiss?”
YES, BUT (Even, rolled 50)

Elizabeth Bathory
It was a plea for mercy, Thadeus. I am tired of the war, and I am tired of being the only one who remembers how to stop it.

Thadeus Jovanović
Her pulse is steady against my neck, but her eyes are still calculating the cost of every word.
“Thadeus ask Elizabeth about the Eternal Corridor. "Was that you I saw in the forest? It looked like you, but seemed different."”
SUCCESS (Fair Psychology, rolled +2)
Elizabeth loosens her grip at his collar and lets the silence sit between them. The faint pulse of the Peacebringer washes the scorched floor in cold blue.

Thadeus Jovanović
Was that you I saw in the forest? It looked like you, but different. Was that the Eternal Corridor?

Elizabeth Bathory
Yes. Not all of me, and not the part that stayed here. The Corridor keeps copies, echoes, mistakes. It is how I have been watching this city survive what should have killed it.
Her expression tightens, not with fear, but with the strain of saying too much at once.

Elizabeth Bathory
The version you met in the forest was a trace, a guide. The one in this room is the one that chose to come back. I am trying to stop the next collapse before it eats everything left.

Thadeus Jovanović
She is answering directly. Carefully, but directly.

Elizabeth Bathory
That is what I want next, Thadeus. Not victory. Not a throne. A way to close the Corridor without leaving the city to rot behind it.

“Thadeus presses the issue with manipulation. Thadeus states, "You tried to kill me back in the cathedral. You lead this Revenant cult that has caused so much destruction in the city already. How is this not another manipulation?"”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Thadeus lets the question hang, steady under the dim blue pulse. He does not lower the Peacebringer.

Thadeus Jovanović
You tried to kill me in the cathedral. You lead the Revenant, and this city keeps bleeding because of it. How is this not another manipulation?

Elizabeth Bathory
Because if I was lying, I would have stayed standing.

Elizabeth Bathory
It is control, yes. It is also damage control. I built a machine out of fear and obedience, then lost hold of parts of it.
She shifts back on her heels, palms open now, face drawn with fatigue rather than defiance.

Elizabeth Bathory
I am not asking you to trust my motives. I am asking you to notice the difference between me, and what I set loose.

Elizabeth Bathory
The Corridor is failing. If it breaks the wrong way, the whole city goes with it. That is what I am trying to stop.
For a beat, her gaze flicks to the ruined hall beyond the chamber, where the courthouse feels hollow and exposed.
“Thadeus looks down at Peacebringer. "I know what this weapon does, Elizabeth. The wielder with good intent can control it, but a wielder with evil intent will be destroyed by it. You wanted me to wield for your purposes, didn't you?"”
SUCCESS (Fair Psychology, rolled +2)

Thadeus lowers his eyes to the Peacebringer, then back to her face. The faint blue pulse lights the broken floor between them.

Thadeus Jovanović
I know what this weapon does, Elizabeth. The one who means well can hold it. The one who means harm gets ruined by it. You wanted me to wield it for you, didn’t you?
Elizabeth’s mouth tightens, not from surprise, but from being named too cleanly. She gives a small, tired nod.

Elizabeth Bathory
Yes. At first, I wanted a hand strong enough to carry it without breaking. Then I wanted someone honest enough to make it matter.
She glances toward the dim chamber beyond them, where the courthouse sits in splintered silence, then back to Thadeus.

Elizabeth Bathory
I did not choose you to be my weapon. I chose you because I could not trust myself to touch it without turning everything into another scheme.
Her hand lifts, stops short of him, and falls back to her side. The gesture lands like an admission.

Elizabeth Bathory
If I am trying to control the story, it is because I am afraid of what happens when nobody does.
“Thadeus sighs, "I want to believe you, but you're going to have to prove yourself. Call off your Revenant guards. This madness has to end."”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Thadeus lets the silence sit for a beat, then speaks plainly, his hand steady on the Peacebringer. The blue pulse washes once across the cracked floor.

Thadeus Jovanović
I want to believe you, but you're going to have to prove yourself. Call off your Revenant guards. This madness has to end.
Elizabeth studies him, then gives a single, resigned nod. The strain in her shoulders eases, just enough to show she is choosing this.

Elizabeth Bathory
Fine. They stand down. No more guards in the chamber, no more orders to keep fighting here.
She turns her head toward the ruined hall and raises her voice, sharp and carrying, not for persuasion now, but command.

Elizabeth Bathory
Enough. Everyone inside this courthouse, fall back. Hold your positions. Do not engage Thadeus or his people.
When she looks back, the war is still on her face, but the mask has shifted. Her next words come quieter, as if she is letting him see the cost of the choice.

Elizabeth Bathory
That should buy us a moment. If I am wrong, I would rather be wrong honestly than keep feeding this.
“Thadeus nods in appreciation for Elizabeth's words. Thadeus stands back up. Elizabeth tries to stand, but finds her legs have no strength. She asks Thadeus to please not leave her here. Thadeus contemplates, and picks her up. In another time, the scene would look like the groom carrying his bride. Carrying Elizabeth, Thadeus walks towards the double doors of the courtroom entrance.”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

Thadeus gives a small nod, then rises from the scorched floor with the Peacebringer in hand. Elizabeth tries to follow, but her knees fail her and she catches herself on one hand.

Elizabeth Bathory
Don't leave me here, Thadeus.
He pauses, reads the strain in her face, then bends and lifts her cleanly into his arms.
Elizabeth exhales against his shoulder, surprised by the steadiness of it, and lets her weight settle.

Elizabeth Bathory
I have spent too long pretending I can carry this alone.
Thadeus starts toward the double doors, boots scraping through dust and ash. The faint blue pulse catches on the broken chairs and the old stone around them.

Elizabeth Bathory
If he reaches the doors with me, then this stops being a war of distance.
“As they walk outside of the courtroom, Thadeus feels his phone vibrate. He carefully pulls it out with one hand while still carrying Elizabeth in the other and answers. He hears Marla's voice, asking what happened. He's turns to Elizabeth and smiles, saying to Marla, "We've stopped the Revenant. We've won our war." Elizabeth looks away again, face flushed. Thadeus plans on asking Elizabeth about the Eternal Corridor once everyone is home safe.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Thadeus steps into the corridor with Elizabeth in his arms, the courthouse doors yawning ahead of him and dust sliding down the walls like gray rain.
His phone buzzes against his palm. He shifts her weight, frees the screen with one hand, and answers without stopping.

Marla
What happened?
Thadeus turns his head toward Elizabeth, a small smile touching his beard as he carries her forward.

Thadeus Jovanović
We stopped the Revenant. We won our war.
Elizabeth looks away, cheeks warm, one arm still anchored around his shoulder while the other hangs loose against his chest.

Elizabeth Bathory
He says it like it can stay true, if he can get us all out.
Thadeus keeps moving toward the exit, carrying her with steady care, the Peacebringer low at his side and the promise of questions waiting until everyone is home safe.
“Thadeus asks Marla to meet him in front of courthouse entrance. While walking down the hallway, Thadeus looks at Elizabeth and speaks, "Many of the Revenant I've come across were undead. How did you manage that?"”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Thadeus reaches the courthouse entrance and eases Elizabeth down only long enough to free his phone. The open corridor breathes cold air behind them.

Thadeus Jovanović
Marla, meet us at the front entrance.
He keeps walking as he speaks, Elizabeth still braced against him, the Peacebringer low and steady at his side.

Thadeus Jovanović
Many of the Revenant I've come across were undead. How did you manage that?

Elizabeth Bathory
Not manage. Endure. The first people I gathered were already half gone, and I made the machinery fit what was left.

Elizabeth Bathory
The Corridor kept turning loss into persistence. I used it because I was afraid a normal army would fail in a day.
Her voice stays calm, but her fingers tighten once at his collar, like she is choosing each word before it escapes.

Elizabeth Bathory
That is the part I kept from everyone. I called them Revenant because they were hard to bury, and harder to lose.
“Thadeus frowns, "Elizabeth, I know the Corridor affects the flow of time. What does that have to do with the undead?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

Thadeus Jovanović
Elizabeth, I know the Corridor affects the flow of time. What does that have to do with the undead?

Elizabeth Bathory
Because it keeps what should end, from ending cleanly. Bodies remember the wrong shape, and the Corridor repeats that mistake until it looks like hunger.

Elizabeth Bathory
They are not dead the way you mean it. They are persistence with no rest, held together by the machine and by fear of what comes after.
She looks past Thadeus for a second, toward the open corridor, then back at him, as if measuring how much of the truth he can carry.

Elizabeth Bathory
I used that persistence to build a force that would not vanish when the city panicked. That choice bought time, and it also made a monster I could not fully put back.

Elizabeth Bathory
So yes, the Corridor is why they keep moving. It is also why I am trying to close it before it teaches the whole city to stay broken.
Her hand loosens from his collar at last, not surrender, just a small release of control as the dust keeps falling between them.
“Still carrying Elizabeth, Thadeus reaches the entrance of the courthouse and steps out in the open air. He sees Marla and Elias at the bottom of outdoor courtroom steps, both appearing to be shocked and who he is carrying outside. Elias holds his Holy Cross out, shouting to Thadeus,"What...what are you doing with her?!? She destroyed half of the city!" Thadeus raises a free hand to calm him and says, "It's okay, she safe for now. Let's go home." Begrudgingly, Elias agrees and directs to his car parked in front of the courthouse.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +3)

Thadeus carries Elizabeth through the courthouse doors and into the hard daylight. The steps drop away beneath him, and the waiting silence outside feels bigger than the chamber behind them.
Marla and Elias freeze at the bottom of the stairs, staring up at the sight of Elizabeth in Thadeus's arms. Elias raises the Holy Cross on reflex, fear and fury both on his face.

Elias the Shopkeeper
What are you doing with her? She destroyed half the city!

Thadeus Jovanović
It's okay, she is safe for now. Let's go home.
Thadeus lowers his free hand in a steadying gesture. The motion lands, and Elias's grip loosens a fraction, his weapon dipping as he looks past anger to the woman in Thadeus's arms.

Marla
He is carrying her out in the open. That has to mean something.

Elizabeth Bathory
It means I am done pretending the corridor is under control.
Elias exhales, still wary, but he points toward a sedan parked directly in front of the courthouse. Marla watches Elizabeth closely, while the loosened edge of Elizabeth's collar shows how close this argument has come to breaking.
