Chains of Peace and Intent

Thadeus reaches the rear service door first. Marla dims her phone and angles the courthouse layout toward him, the marked control point glowing faintly on the screen. Elias stays tight behind them, jaw set, listening for footsteps.

The loading bay is half-lit by a buzzing work lamp. Ahead, a narrow corridor branches toward the control room, but a locked fire door blocks the direct route. A guard station window sits dark to the right.

A thin click echoes from the corridor. Voices drift closer, then stop. Someone on the other side of the door is checking the lock.

Thadeus has the line, the map, and the only clear path to Elizabeth. The assault starts here, with the service corridor as the wedge into the courthouse.

Elias slips Marla away from the door, both of them hugging the shadow line toward a nearby stairwell. Thadeus lets them go, then plants his boot at the fire door and drives a hard kick into the lower panel.

The metal booms through the loading bay. Beyond it, movement snaps into place, boots scraping, armor shifting, a lock clicking free.

Thadeus folds back into the dark beside the guard station window, wooden sword low, body still. Two armed Revenant men swing the fire door open just wide enough to search the bay, their rifles angled ahead of them.

They stare into the dimness, hunting for the source of the sound. Thadeus waits in the shadows, silent and ready, while the doorway hangs open.

The guards hesitate at the opening, glance once into the bay, then start to ease the fire door shut again.

Thadeus breaks from the shadow line, crossing the floor in a low sprint as the gap narrows.

He jams the wooden sword into the frame before the latch can catch, stopping the door with a muted scrape of metal on wood.

The door hangs half-closed, held just enough to deny a clean lock, while the guards freeze on the other side.

From the stairwell side, Marla turns her head back, alert at the sudden stillness in the bay.

Elias grips the side hall wall and looks toward Thadeus, waiting for the next move.

Beyond the cracked doorway, one guard shifts his rifle and peers down at the wedge, realizing the door will not shut cleanly.

Marla takes the stairs fast, vanishing above the landing. The loading bay feels tighter without her, just the lamp buzz and the half-wedged door breathing in the dark.

Thadeus releases the wooden sword from the frame and steps back into cover. He draws the Peacebringer, and the leather shifts, then brightens into its chain form with a blue glow he knows too well.

Elias rushes to Thadeus's side, Holy Cross in hand, his stance squared and ready. Beyond the gap, the guard leans in with his rifle, staring at the changing weapon instead of the door.

The whip cracks around the doorframe, catches the guard square in the chest, and blue fire erupts through the gap. He vanishes into ash and sparks before the rifle can rise.

Heat rolls across the loading bay, then dies fast. Thadeus glances down at his palms, untouched, as the fire door shudders open wider on the force of the blast.

Elias lunges first, Holy Cross still gripped tight, and Thadeus drives through the doorway with him. Their boots hit the courthouse side hard, cutting the bay off behind them.

The door swings back with a metallic bang, no longer a quiet breach. Somewhere deeper inside, a radio starts to chatter.

Elias snatches up the wooden sword from near the threshold and keeps moving, carrying it at his side like a backup promise.

Ahead, the corridor bends toward the control point, but a bootstep answers the radio from the dark hall beyond. The breach is inside now, and something has heard them.

Thadeus catches the moving line in the hall, half a dozen soldiers cutting toward them fast. He guides Elias into the nearest courtroom and slips in after him, letting the door swallow the sound of their boots.

Inside, the room is dim and formal, with rows of empty seats and a judge’s bench fading into shadow. Thadeus holds still at the back wall, listening while the courthouse radio chatter leaks through the plaster.

A faint buzz breaks the hush. Thadeus checks his phone, and Marla’s message lights the screen, quick and teasing.

Another message follows immediately, and the humor drops out of the room. Marla has camera access now, and she reports heavy movement near their position.

Thadeus stays put, holding the courtroom in silence while the hallway traffic passes outside. The breach has turned from hidden to hunted, and the next move belongs to Marla.

A burst of radio static tears through the courtroom wall, then a man’s voice snaps a code phrase and goes dead. Someone in the hall has heard something they should not have heard.

Bootsteps stop outside the door. Not passing by, stopping. The handle twitches once, slow and testing, as if the patrol is deciding whether to trust the silence.

The door shudders under a hard shoulder, and dust sifts from the frame. Elias tightens his grip on the Holy Cross, eyes fixed on Thadeus, waiting for the call.

Thadeus lifts a hand toward Elias, a sharp signal to move for the judge’s chambers by the back route Marla marked.

The courtroom door flies inward. Six armed guards surge through the opening, guns up, boots scraping over dust and broken silence.

The Peacebringer answers. Blue light floods Thadeus’s chest and arms, and he starts to rise off the floor.

His eyes burn bright blue. The glow runs under his skin in live, branching lines, and the guards stop cold in the doorway.

Their rifles stay trained on him, but none of them advances. Fear pins the whole stack of men in place.

Thadeus drives the Peacebringer down, and blue fire skims the floor in a hard, clean line.

It rips through the threshold, catches the armed men before they can retreat, and strips them into drifting ash.

The doorway empties in a breath. Dust and gray residue tumble over the broken frame.

Thadeus lowers with the fading glow, feet touching the courtroom floor as the light recedes from his skin.

His eyes return to normal. The blue pulse remains only in the weapon, humming low in his hand.

Elias stares at him, jaw slack, then snaps his focus back toward the corridor as boots echo somewhere deeper in the courthouse.

Thadeus leans out into the corridor, Peacebringer low, and checks both directions in one swift glance. No boots, no movement, just a long strip of courthouse shadow and the stale echo of their own entrance.

Elias steps in beside him, tense and listening, then glances at his phone as Marla comes through on the line.

Thadeus takes the confirmation in stride, then starts forward with Elias at his shoulder. The ash from the doorway clings to their shoes as they move down the hall.

Ahead, the courthouse opens toward a central chamber, and the air feels colder there, as if the building itself is holding its breath.

The hallway stays empty behind them, but the path ahead is no longer silent.

Thadeus reaches Elias in a few hard strides, dropping to one knee beside him as the shopkeeper pushes himself up against the wall. The stone marker looms behind them, its initials, EB, cut clean into the surface.

Elias blinks through the daze, one hand braced on the floor, the other pressed to his ribs. He draws a shaky breath, then gives Thadeus a crooked, embarrassed look.

Thadeus stays close, steadying himself beside him while the corridor hums with silence. The blue light from the Peacebringer washes the dust in cold color.

Elias plants his feet and gets fully upright, still unsteady but refusing to fold. He looks from the obelisk to Thadeus, then nods once toward the corridor ahead.

Thadeus steps to the obelisk and lays his palm flat against the carved EB. The stone shivers with the same force that threw Elias back, but the surge goes nowhere. It sinks into the Talisman instead, swallowed whole.

He flicks the Peacebringer open and whips it through the marker. The chain bites cleanly through the stone, splitting it from top to bottom in one sharp stroke.

The obelisk collapses into gray dust that spills across the floor like ash in a draft. Elias flinches at the burst, then stares as the cloud clears.

Behind where the stone stood, double doors wait in the wall, dark and untouched.

The corridor behind them stays quiet, but the doors ahead feel claimed now, as if the building itself has finally admitted where the control point hides.
