Elizabeth scrambles up first in the cramped tunnel, one hand on the damp wall, the other reaching for balance. Behind her, the broken floor of the hall groans and sheds dust into the darkness.

She pivots hard and plants herself in front of the only visible exit, shoulders squared, blocking the narrow opening with her whole body.

Thadeus lands in a crouch among the others, blue light from above flickering weakly through the broken gap. Elias stumbles to one knee, staring at the sealed route back.

The maintenance passage hums with distant impacts from the hall above, while Elizabeth keeps her stance locked at the exit, watching Thadeus like a guard who has just changed sides.

Thadeus drives the Peacebringer into Elizabeth’s midsection, and she jerks sideways off the threshold.

The blow opens the exit for a second, blue light flashing over the wet concrete as dust spills from above.

Elias flinches back hard, one hand up at the sight of her clawed fingers scraping the wall to catch herself.

Water ripples around his shoulders, and something scrapes unseen along the channel beside him. The passage has changed, and standing still is no longer an option.

Thadeus kicks free of the sinking debris and catches a slick ledge with his boot. He hauls himself to a crouch in the foul water, Peacebringer still up and ready.

He shifts onto it, shoulders squared to the dark, using the wall for balance. Water slaps his calves as he steadies his grip.

Above, the broken slit of light trembles with falling dust, but no one drops through after him. The tunnel ahead bends into deeper shadow and moving water.

Her voice carries from somewhere unseen, then cuts off. Thadeus remains braced on the shelf, weapon trained on the passage as the water keeps flowing past him.

Thadeus holsters the Peacebringer and draws his phone, its white beam cutting a hard line through the dark water.

He starts forward through the channel, boots sending up black ripples as the current tugs at his ankles.

The beam catches damp brick, corroded pipework, and a long, straight run vanishing into shadow. No exit shows itself yet.

Above him, dust still sifts through the broken seam in the ceiling, but nothing follows. The tunnel stays quiet except for water and Thadeus's steps.

He keeps moving, phone held high, the narrow shelf and the unseen bend behind him giving way to a deeper stretch ahead.

He starts to type back, thumb hovering over the glass, but the screen gutters to black. The dead phone leaves only the black water, the brick walls, and a low red glow ahead.

Thadeus squares his shoulders and follows that red light, boots whispering through the channel until the darkness gives way to a thin-lit bend.

The glow catches on wet concrete and a rusted service lip, and the tunnel opens into a cramped junction below the stronghold.

Above the bend, Elizabeth's shadow shifts at the far edge of the red, still blocking the space behind him from the upper passage.

Thadeus stops in the spill of red light, Peacebringer ready at his side, with the tunnel now forcing the next choice.
