Chains of Peace and Intent

Cold air bites as Thadeus steps into the industrial district, the Peacebringer hidden under his jacket. He pauses under a dead streetlamp, listening to the city hum fade behind rows of rusted fences.

Thadeus heads down the narrow access lane, boots crunching gravel. Ahead, a warehouse wall breaks into a service door and a strip of blacked-out windows, the hidden address finally matching the map.

Behind him, the temporary room stays warm with blue light and quiet urgency. Ahead, the Revenant facility waits in silence, and Thadeus reaches the edge of its perimeter with the first real chance to learn what the Peacebringer is for.

A strip of motion cuts across the warehouse windows, not from inside, but from the alley side. A rolling security shutter halfway down the far loading bay rattles upward, then stops, as if someone on the other side has just changed their mind.

Thadeus hears it a second before he sees it, a man's voice muffled through metal, tense and hurried. Not a guard, not a warning. A plea.

A beam of phone light slips under the shutter, then disappears. Somewhere deeper in the facility, a door slams once, hard enough to shake dust from the frame.

Thadeus watches the man's eyes dart toward the shadows behind him, the urgency in his voice failing to mask a flicker of calculated deceit. The man is not offering a warning, but a lure.

Thadeus stays where he is, letting the shutter and the shadow do the work between them. He does not advance, only angles the Peacebringer low and ready.

The man shifts sideways from behind the loading shutter, keeping the opening between them. He gestures toward the darker service doorway deeper inside, and Thadeus can see he means to walk first.

The partially raised shutter rattles above them, and the slammed interior door leaves the warehouse feeling occupied even before anyone else appears.

Thadeus has the route in sight now, with the man leading and no one close enough to reach him without crossing open ground.

Thadeus narrows his eyes, spotting the faint, metallic glint of a tripwire stretched taut across the base of the service doorway. Beyond the frame, the floorboards show signs of recent tampering, suggesting a pressure-sensitive trigger hidden beneath the dust.

Thadeus snaps the Peacebringer downward. The whip cracks across the wire, and the tripwire pops free with a sharp metallic twang.

Somewhere inside, a hidden mechanism jolts and misfires, louder than the wire itself. Dust shakes from the doorway frame.

He jerks back from the service doorway, eyes wide, betrayed by the sound. The false calm on his face breaks open.

A side panel inside the threshold swings loose, exposing a narrow service corridor and a handwritten placard taped to the wall.

The note reads, Everyone leaves their phones at the desk. The room beyond is still live.

The Unknown Man stares at the open passage, then at Thadeus, caught between retreat and whatever is already waiting in the dark.

Thadeus steps through the broken threshold instead of giving the room another second to set its traps. The air turns stale and dusty around him.

Inside, the service corridor opens into a cramped desk space with a ledger, a dead monitor, and a wall of taped notes. His eyes catch the one that matters first, names, times, and a single line about moving the Peacebringer to a secondary hold.

A second page, half torn, lists a safe route, a lock code, and a warning about who can be trusted to enter the rear rooms. Thadeus has the information he came for, plain and visible.

Thadeus turns just enough to keep the man in view while still reading the wall. The Unknown Man stays pinned near the doorway, empty-handed and shaking, as if he expects the room itself to punish him.

The note gives Thadeus a clear identity trail, too, a shift supervisor’s initials at the bottom, smudged but legible. The hideout is no longer a mystery, it is a working operation with records.
