Chains of Peace and Intent

Thadeus sits in the dim living room, breathing slowly as the city noise fades behind the windows. The ledger rests nearby, closed for now.

A sharp knock lands on the front door, then repeats, steady and deliberate.

Thadeus opens it to a slender woman in a red dress and matching heels. She stands under the porch light, dark brown hair neat against her shoulders, her face calm and unreadable.

She waits on the threshold, hands empty, watching Thadeus for his answer while the hallway light spills across her heels.

Thadeus lets her in, but the instant she clears the threshold, she drops low and drives him backward. They hit the floor hard, and he twists with the fall instead of taking it flat.

Her weight settles across his chest, her hands pinning his wrists to the boards. Thadeus strains against the hold, shoulders set, refusing to be rolled any farther.

The name snaps the ledger into place. The initials, the route, the hidden movement, they all point back to her, and not by accident.

She keeps him down, but her tone is controlled, not frantic. The open doorway throws porch light across the rug, the closed ledger, and the blue-glinting Peacebringer beside them.

Thadeus drives his knees in and bucks hard. Elizabeth loses the pin and slides off him onto one hip.

He comes up on an elbow, creating space between them, the Peacebringer glinting near the threshold.

She knows EB.

She stays low by the open door, hands visible now, but her eyes keep flicking to the ledger on the side table.

Thadeus snatches the Peacebringer up from the threshold. Elizabeth jerks as if struck by a shock she can feel through the air, then recoils and retreats out into the porch light.

He surges to the door, drives it shut, and turns the lock. The latch bites cleanly, and the living room falls quiet except for his breathing.

The lock holds.

Beyond the door, Elizabeth’s footsteps fade back from the steps. Inside, the closed ledger sits on the side table like a challenge waiting its turn.

The deadbolt clicks, but the frame groans as a heavy boot kicks the door near the lock. The wood splinters, and the door swings inward with a violent crack.

Thadeus keeps his ground and lets the Peacebringer speak for him. The glowing weapon settles into a steady line toward the ruined doorway, and Elizabeth stops pushing inside.

Elizabeth eases back from the threshold, palms open, eyes flicking to the ledger in Thadeus's hand. Her expression sharpens, not with fear, but recognition.

She nods once toward the torn entryway, then lowers her voice. The porch beyond is quiet, the broken door hanging between them like a warning.

Elizabeth lets the silence stretch, then slowly reaches into the red dress and pulls out a scorched ID badge. She holds it where the blue light can catch the burn marks, not as a threat, but as proof.

Her smile fades. For the first time, she looks less like a stranger at his door and more like someone bracing to be recognized.

Elizabeth stills in the broken doorway, the red of her dress catching the blue flicker from the weapon in Thadeus’s hand. Her gaze drops to the glow, then back to him, measured and wary.

She eases her empty hand up, palm open, and lets the scorched badge hang in the other. The ruined frame sheds another curl of fresh splinters beside her boots.

Elizabeth does not answer at once. She takes one step back from the broken door, the blue glow wavering across her face.

Then she turns and slips off the porch into the dark, her red dress vanishing between the shadows and the rain.

The hall goes still again, except for the low hum of the Peacebringer.

Thadeus shuts the door, turns the lock, and stands there a moment with the weapon lowered.

He climbs to the bedroom, closes that door too, and lets the quiet settle over him.

By the time the blue light dulls under the crack of the door, Thadeus is asleep.
