Chains of Peace and Intent

Blue light pools over the desk notes as Thadeus scans the ledger. The hidden panel is open, the corridor beyond breathing old dust and cold air.

His phone buzzes hard in his hand. Marla’s name flashes across the screen.

The distant rumble at the loading bay grows teeth, engines stacking into a low, ugly vibration through the concrete.

The Unknown Man hits the maintenance hatch and fumbles it open, half-turning as if to flee deeper into the building.

Thadeus has the ledger, the notes, and the Peacebringer's trail in front of him. One exit is a lie, the other is still hidden.

Thadeus snaps the Peacebringer forward. The whip cracks across the Unknown Man’s chest as he turns, and his momentum breaks into a spill of gray dust that washes over the hatch rim.

The man is gone in an instant, leaving only ash, a darkened imprint, and the maintenance opening yawning wider than before.

From somewhere beyond the concrete wall, engines surge louder. The first van doors slam, followed by the hard rhythm of boots hitting metal stairs.

Marla’s voice cuts back through the phone, tight and fast. "Thadeus, I hear them. Get out, now."

The blue glow skims the ledger where the shift supervisor’s initials sit under Thadeus’s thumb, then slides toward the hidden panel and the open tunnel beyond.

The concrete access lane vibrates with the approaching convoy, while the only clear escape drops into the service corridor or rises into the noise.

Thadeus drops into the service corridor and lands in a crouch. He hooks the metal bar through the hatch handles and drives it into the frame with his shoulder, locking the opening behind him.

Above, the hatch thuds under a testing shove, but it stays put. The sounds of boots and engine doors fade into a dull rattle overhead.

He keeps the ledger and notes tight in one hand, the Peacebringer low in the other, its blue wash sliding over the shift supervisor's initials.

The corridor ahead bends into dark concrete, narrow and unfinished, with a second turn deeper below the hideout.

The hidden passage swallows the light behind him while the way forward waits in silence.

Thadeus lifts the phone screen and the corridor snaps into pale rectangles of light. Concrete walls close in on both sides, bare pipe overhead, the floor rough with dust and old boot tracks.

He breaks into a fast run, keeping the ledger and notes tucked tight while the Peacebringer points low and steady. The blue glow skims the walls, then catches a side opening ahead.

Thadeus reaches the opening and slows just enough to see it is a steel service door, half-hidden in the concrete and marked by a fresh scrape at the latch.

He pushes it open with his shoulder. Cold air spills through from a lower service tunnel beyond, carrying the faint hum of distant machinery and a draft that smells like rain and rust.

He steps through into the second passage, the door swinging shut behind him as the hideout noise dulls to a muffled throb. Ahead, the tunnel bends toward darkness and an exit sign glows weakly farther on.

The tunnel narrows, and the red glow at the open door bleeds across the concrete. Thadeus eases toward it, ledger pinned tight, Peacebringer low, every footfall swallowed by dust.

A shape moves inside the doorway, fast. Thadeus turns with it, but the strike comes first, an iron-hard blow crashing into his guard and knocking him back a step.

He keeps his balance, shoulders squared, sword and whip shifting together as he regains the lane in front of him.

The red light keeps pulsing from the room beyond, and the muffled thud of footsteps grows louder in the tunnel.

Thadeus faces the open door, the ledger still in hand, with only the flicker ahead and the closing threat behind.

Thadeus flicks the Peacebringer once, and the lash snaps through the shape in the doorway. The shadow bursts into flame and drops a collapsed skeleton at the threshold.

Heat rolls over his hands, and the ledger papers singe at the edge. Behind him, Marla inhales sharply through the phone speaker.

The red light from the side room catches the bones, the metal bar, and the initials on the ledger page in Thadeus's grip.

Footsteps pound closer in the tunnel, and another voice barks from the dark behind him, too close to ignore.

Thadeus leaves Lower service tunnel of the Revenant hideout behind and arrives at Outside the Revenant hideout.

Night air hits him hard, cold and wet, a relief after the tunnel heat. Thadeus hauls himself clear of the hatch and plants the ledger against his chest.

The service yard lies cramped between brick walls, puddles trembling under a weak floodlight. Rain freckles the gravel, and the open hatch gapes below him.

He grabs the nearest cinder blocks and stacks them over the hatch lip, sealing the opening with rough, heavy thuds.

A door somewhere inside the building bangs, then voices echo up through the concrete. The yard stays empty, but not for long.

From the alley mouth, a pale strip of moonlight cuts across the fence and points toward a rusted side gate, half-closed and waiting.
