Chains of Peace and Intent

Rain ticks on the sedan roof while Thadeus draws the duffel into the backseat. Elias shuts off the engine, and the cabin falls quiet except for their breathing.

Thadeus unzips the canvas. Inside sits a hard case, scuffed and plain, its latches still shut.

Elias leans closer, eyes fixed on the case. His shoulders loosen a little, like he is afraid to hope too fast.

Outside, the storm keeps washing the lot in silver streaks. Inside, the question hangs between them, soft and careful, waiting for Thadeus to answer.

Thadeus eases the latch open, and the hard case gives with a dry click. Rainlight flashes over folded black lining and a coiled length of leather and metal resting inside like a housed strike.

He lifts it free. The weapon is a whip, but no ordinary one, with a heavy grip and segmented length that catches the dash glow like worn silver. It sits in his hand with deliberate weight.

Elias leans in from the front seat, eyes wide now, hope sharpening into certainty as he sees the weapon. His breath fogs the glass for a second.

Outside, a set of headlights washes across the wet lot and slides away again, slow and searching. Inside the sedan, the whip lies ready between them, and Elias looks from it to Thadeus, waiting for what comes next.
