Thadeus reaches the red-lit junction and stops dead. Elizabeth leans against the damp concrete, her torn dress clinging in strips, one hand curled in a sharp beckon.

Elizabeth Bathory
Come here, Thadeus. Let’s end this.

Thadeus Jovanović
The passage behind her is not empty.
A hulking shape waits in the dark beyond Elizabeth, so still it feels carved out of the black water itself. The red glow catches nothing but its outline.
Thadeus keeps his footing on the slick channel floor, wooden sword low, trenchcoat dripping. The junction narrows here, and there is nowhere to go except through her.

Elizabeth Bathory
You want out of this sewer, then choose. Me first, or whatever’s standing behind me.
The air tightens around the three of them, and the city’s chaos feels very far away. This is the last choke point between Thadeus and the escape route beyond the tunnel.
“Before he can react, Thadeus watches to hulking figure pick up Elizabeth, the creatures hand large to squeeze around her stomach. Surprised, Elizabeth attempts to claw the hand around her stomach, barely even scratching it”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

The hulking figure finally moves, one huge arm uncoiling out of the black water toward Elizabeth’s waist.
Thadeus catches the whole shape in the red glow, broad-shouldered, close enough to hide behind her, and already reaching.
Its hand closes around Elizabeth’s stomach in a single brutal clamp, lifting her boots clear of the slick concrete.

Elizabeth Bathory
What are you doing?
Elizabeth rakes at the fingers with her clawed hands, but the grip barely shifts, like she is scratching a locked gate.
Thadeus sees it plainly now, the figure is not waiting with her, it is using her as a shield to drag the fight into the open.
The junction tightens around them, red light on wet concrete, black water trembling at Thadeus’s feet as the hidden body starts to step forward.
“As quickly as it grabbed Elizabeth, Thadeus watches the figure jump back in the darkness, Elizabeth screaming in the distance. Alone again, Thadeus sees a little torch in the distance, which he takes off the wall and continues down the tunnels.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Thadeus snaps the wooden sword up as the grip vanishes into the dark. Elizabeth’s shout echoes off wet concrete, then cuts off somewhere deeper in the tunnel.
The hulking shape gives ground in the shadows, retreating just enough to break the line of attack and drag the fight out of reach.
Alone at the junction, Thadeus spots a little torch fixed to the wall, its flame fighting the red emergency glow.

Thadeus Jovanović
A wall torch.
He yanks it free in one motion, the metal handle hot in his hand, and the dead end of the tunnel opens into a thin moving light.
Thadeus turns down the next stretch, torch held forward, water hissing around his boots as the junction falls behind him.
Ahead, the passage bends into darker concrete, and the red light thins, leaving only the torch and a shifting black shape farther on.
“Thadeus sees an opening down the corridor, leading to a circular room. In the center is a pedestal with a necklace, adorned with several gems. At the opposite end of the room, there's a metal ladder seems to go up for several hundred feet.”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

The torch beam catches a circular chamber ahead, slick walls curving around a shallow pool of black water.
At the center, a pedestal rises out of the wet floor, and a necklace with several dull gems rests on top like bait.

Thadeus Jovanović
A room, a pedestal, and a ladder.
Thadeus steps in just far enough to see the far wall, where a metal ladder climbs straight up into darkness for what looks like hundreds of feet.
The torchlight trembles, and a stone in the floor shifts under his boot, sending a sharp splash across the chamber.
From the black water at the room’s edge, a shape stirs, and the tunnel behind him answers with a low scrape.
Thadeus holds the sword and torch higher, forcing the room into view as the ladder waits above and the dark closes in behind.

Escape the tunnels
“Seeing the hulking figure close the distance, Thadeus quickly grabs the necklace, causing a previously unseen portcullis drop at the room's entrance, slamming in front of the figure. Seeing no other exit, Thadeus pockets the necklace, and starts climbing the ladder.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Thadeus snatches the necklace off the pedestal. A hidden portcullis crashes down at the chamber mouth, sealing the hulking figure out with a metallic boom.

Thadeus Jovanović
The gate holds.
He jams the necklace into a pocket and turns for the ladder as the red light quivers over wet stone.
The first rung bites under his hand, cold and slick. Behind him, the trapped figure hammers once against the bars, but the sound is already muffled by distance and water.
Thadeus climbs fast, boots skidding, shoulder brushing the shaft wall. The torch light drops away below him.
At the base of the ladder, a dark smear marks the floor where his left palm catches on a rung, the Peacebringer's old scorch answering with a fresh sting.
Above, the ladder disappears into a narrow hatch seam, and something on the other side shifts with a soft click, waiting.

Necklace
“Thadeus climbs the last for what feels like hours, going further into the darkness above. Having dropped the torch, he cannot see above him, but can only feel his way further up. After some time, he does see another soft red light above, next to what appears to be a valve.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Thadeus climbs into the dark, one rung at a time, until the tunnel narrows around his shoulders and the wet stone steals all sense of depth. The red glow above strengthens, thin but steady, and the shape of a valve comes into view beside it.

Thadeus Jovanović
The light is fixed to the pipe, not the wall.
He reaches the top section and plants a hand on the lip beside the valve, hauling himself level with it. The chamber below falls away into blackness, the portcullis now only a dull grid of sound.
The valve sits under the red lamp, crusted with mineral streaks, and the hatch seam beside it is no longer sealed shut. A faint draft slips through, carrying damp air from somewhere beyond.
Thadeus steadies himself at the opening, sword and Peacebringer held close, and peers into the next space. The red light catches on metal farther ahead, as if the tunnel opens into another route.
From below, a heavy impact rattles the ladder once, but the barrier holds. Then a sharper noise answers from above, a scrape of something shifting in the unseen dark beyond the hatch.
Thadeus reaches the valve and the hatch threshold together, with the way above now exposed and waiting. Somewhere past the opening, movement pauses as if whatever is there has noticed him first.
“Opening the hatch, Thadeus steps out into open air. He's outside, but not where he should be. Surrounding him is a large forest, with trees so high he cannot see where they end. The air is cold, which also doesn't make sense. He appears to be alone”
