Thadeus passes a dim storefront, then the door jerks open and a frantic man in a grease-stained apron hauls him inside. The deadbolt snaps shut behind them.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Are they going to break the glass?

The shop is dark except for a wall of televisions, all flickering with the riot from a news helicopter overhead. Behind the counter, the shopkeeper trembles, keeping one eye on the windows.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

I saw the barricade move. I thought they were coming straight here.

On the screens, the crowd presses and wavers, but the line has already shifted away from this block. The bent barricade and scattered cans still sit in the background outside, beyond the glass.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

If you know what is happening out there, tell me straight.

✓ Quest Accepted

Escort the shopkeeper home safely

Can the shopkeeper provide me with any gear for protection?

NO (Likely, rolled 87)

Elias shakes his head slowly, his hands trembling as he gestures to his empty, looted shelves. He has nothing left to offer for protection, his own safety being the only thing on his mind.

The televisions hiss with riot footage, but inside the shop, the air goes quiet except for Elias’s unsteady breathing. He swallows, then looks past Thadeus toward the back room, like he is checking a hidden route only he knows.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

There is something else in here. Not stock, not cash. My brother left it with me years ago, told me never to let anyone find it.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

If the crowd breaks back this way, I might not get another chance to decide.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

If I open that room, and it is what I think it is, will you let me explain before you judge me?

Tell Elias I will not judge him and take us to the room

I won't judge you. Show me the room.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Okay. Okay, thank you. It is just... something I kept sealed away.

Elias lowers his hand from the counter and turns fully toward the back hall. Thadeus follows without crowding him, the wooden sword held low as the televisions flicker blue over stripped shelves.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

He stays calm. Maybe this does not have to become a disaster.

At the rear doorway, Elias stops and reaches up to the frame. The latch gives with a dry click, and a narrow line of warmer darkness opens beyond it.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

My brother used to say I hide trouble like it is inventory. He was right. I just never knew what this one was until tonight.

He pushes the door open and steps aside instead of going first, letting Thadeus look in. On a small shelf inside, a dust-covered envelope and a taped metal tin sit together in the dim.

Ask Elias about the envelope and the metal tin

Elias glances at the shelf, then back to Thadeus, as if naming the items makes them lighter.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

The envelope is from my brother. The tin, he would not say what was inside, only that it stayed closed unless things got bad.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

I kept both because I could not bear deciding for him.

He crosses to the shelf and lifts the envelope first, thumb brushing the dust from the corner.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

He left it here after our mother died. We did not speak for almost a year after that.

Elias sets the envelope in Thadeus's view, then taps the tin with a careful knuckle, like it might answer back.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

If you want the truth, it is probably in one of these. I have just been too afraid to open either alone.

Ask Elias to open the envelope and read its contents while I open the metal tin

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Elias nods once, then takes the envelope with both hands like it might crumble. Thadeus turns the metal tin in his palm and works the lid free.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

All right. If I am hiding from this, I am hiding from it badly.

The tin opens with a soft click. Inside sits a folded card and a small key taped to it, both worn smooth from being handled and put away again.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

He reads the card under the back-room light, lips parting as the words sink in.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

My brother left an address. And a note that says, if I ever choose honesty over fear, go there first.

Elias lowers the envelope to the shelf and looks at Thadeus, not quite steady, but no longer shutting the whole thing down.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Would you walk with me if I take it?

Agree to go with him to the address, once we've safely returned escaped the riot

Thadeus lowers the tin and gives Elias a small nod, the kind that says he will wait without pushing. The shopkeeper exhales like he has been holding that breath for hours.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Then I am not asking you to chase my past. Just walk beside me when I face it.

The televisions keep flickering blue in the background, but the back-room light feels warmer now, less like a hiding place and more like a table between two men.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

The address is on my street. I have walked past that house a hundred times and never knew.

He taps the card once with a finger, then folds it carefully and tucks it into the envelope as if sealing in a bruise.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

My brother trusted me with this long before I trusted myself.

Elias looks up, steadier now, and shifts the taped key into his palm. He offers it across the shelf, not as a burden, but as a choice.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

When the riot settles, will you come with me to open it?

Agree to go with him to address, placing my hand on his shoulder to comfort the man.

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Thadeus answers with a quiet nod and sets his hand on Elias’s shoulder, firm and steady. The shopkeeper flinches at first, then eases under the touch.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Thank you. I know I keep asking for a little more than I deserve.

The blue TV glow keeps washing the room, but the warmth from the back room still holds between them. Elias lowers his gaze to the key in his palm.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

I thought if I never opened it, I could pretend my brother left me nothing but trouble. That was easier.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

He hated silence. He would have laughed at me waiting this long.

Elias gives a small, embarrassed breath that almost becomes a laugh, then folds the envelope tighter against his chest.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

If you come with me, I do not want you carrying the whole thing. Just... stay beside me when I turn the key.

His eyes lift to Thadeus, open and waiting, while the card sits sealed away and the taped key rests in his hand.

Assist Elias with closing up his shop, checking that the windows and front door are fully locked and secured, then follow Elias as he leads us out the emergency exit in the back of the shop.

SUCCESS (Fair Investigation, rolled +2)

Thadeus moves with Elias through the shop, checking each latch and lock as the TV glow flickers over the empty aisles. The front door seals with a solid final click.

He tests the windows one by one, finding a loosened catch and setting it right before it can shift again. Elias watches, shoulders slowly dropping.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

You make it look simple. I kept staring at these doors like they might forgive me if I waited long enough.

Thadeus finishes the last check and gives Elias a small nod toward the back of the store. The warm spill from the rear room frames the hidden exit.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

My brother used to say every lock is a promise. I think I broke that promise for a long time.

Elias leads the way to the emergency door, key in hand, and pauses only long enough to look back at the shop as if memorizing it. The card stays tucked away, but his grip on it loosens.

Elias the Shopkeeper

Elias the Shopkeeper

Stay close when I open this. I think I can do it now... and I do not want to do it alone.
