The silver seam unfolds without a sound, revealing a narrow passage carved through black stone. Behind them, Mara and Vetta remain with the covenant records, while Nhal accompanies Slaan below.
The passage opens into an observatory. Starless crystal lenses hang in concentric rings around a dormant silver instrument, all pointed toward a ceiling of polished darkness.
As Slaan reaches the chamber’s center, her maternal mark ignites across the instrument’s rim. Fine silver script begins recording her presence, naming her authorized witness.
Nhal
The sealed engine is drawing power through this room. Not enough to awaken the instrument, but enough to make every lens remember you.
A low vibration passes through the floor. The lenses turn by fractions, aligning with Slaan’s mark as pale symbols gather across the dormant instrument.
Nhal
It is not showing the stars. It is searching for the place your mother hid beyond them.
The final lens settles with a quiet click. A sealed aperture appears in the instrument’s center, awaiting the authorized witness while the chamber holds its breath.
✓ Quest Accepted
Uncover the sealed engine’s restoration procedure
““I'm going on a trip.” I grin at Nhal, open my spellbook, and study the lenses. I trace the path of my mother's mark through the instrument, not to restore the engine, but to determine whether the aperture can transport us to the place beyond the stars that she hid.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)
Slaan
I'm going on a trip.
Slaan grins at Nhal, opens her spellbook, and studies the suspended lenses. Their crystal surfaces catch her maternal mark, dividing it into a sequence of silver correspondences.
Slaan
The aperture is a passage, not a viewing glass.
She traces the mark through the dormant instrument, following each alignment into the starless ceiling. The lenses answer by revealing a folded route beyond the visible heavens.
Nhal
It can carry us there. Not as an image, and not as a summoned memory. The aperture recognizes that place as somewhere reachable.
Silver script completes itself around the instrument’s rim, confirming a living transit path keyed to Slaan’s witness and her mother’s hidden destination. The engine remains dormant.
Nhal
Your mother hid a destination, not a secret. If we cross, the path will know we arrived by choice.
✓ Quest Accepted
Reach Slaan’s mother’s hidden destination
“I grin at Nhal. “Well, hun, I did say I was going on a trip.” I take her hand, step into the aperture, and follow my mother's route beyond the stars.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)
Slaan
Well, hun, I did say I was going on a trip.
Slaan grins at Nhal, takes her violet hand, and steps into the aperture. Silver light folds around them without resistance, carrying their joined shadows beyond the starless ceiling.
Nhal
Then let us make certain the destination remembers that we arrived together.
The observatory falls silent behind them. A corridor of silver correspondences unfolds through darkness, each mark matching the maternal seal and guiding them along a route beyond the visible heavens.
Nhal
Her path is not lost. It is waiting, and it has accepted us by choice.
The passage releases them onto a broad terrace of black crystal suspended above a sea of distant, unfamiliar lights. Ancient rain drifts upward from unseen depths, sparkling beneath their feet.
Ahead, silver stairs descend toward a solitary arch bearing Slaan’s mother’s lineage mark. Beyond it, the hidden destination waits in the quiet beyond the stars.
