Slaan steps out of the sheltered grove and into the open air of the Sword Coast. Cold wind combs through the hanging roots behind her, and the first sounds of Phandelver reach them, cartwheels on hard earth, distant calls, the low murmur of trade.

Ahead, the town lies below the western cairn, roofs of pale timber and slate catching the bright edge of afternoon light. The road between is dry, silvered with grit, and wide enough for a hurried return to ordinary life.

Bren

Bren

There it is. Real streets, real people, and hopefully no vault hunger in the walls.

Bren keeps close to Kynes, but her shoulders are looser now. Kynes studies the town with a measured calm, as if weighing which danger comes first, silence or company.

Nhal

Nhal

So many voices. So much shape. It feels... possible.

Nhal pauses at the ridge, cloak fluttering in the wind, and looks down toward Phandelver with wary curiosity. The group begins the descent, leaving the grove behind as the road draws them toward the town gate.

Help Nhal adjust to Phandelver

I turn to Kynes " if you want I'll meet you at the Hall of Welcome, I want to show Nhal around a bit, then we can plan the next move." I start to walk away with Nhal

Slaan slows beside Kynes, the town spread below like a patient promise.

If you want, I will meet you at the Hall of Welcome later. I want to show Nhal around a bit, then we can plan the next move.

Kynes

Kynes

That works. Give them time to breathe, then come find me there.

Bren

Bren

Try the market square first. It is loud, but it is honest.

Nhal

Nhal

So many doors. So many names for places. I can choose where to look first.

Slaan turns away from the others and gestures Nhal onward. Bren and Kynes linger on the ridge, watching the pair take the road into Phandelver.

Nhal’s cloak settles against their shoulders as they draw closer to the town, curiosity edging out hesitation.

I take Nhal to the market square" do you remember anything you liked before the archive? we can see if they have that here."

The market square opens below them in a bright spill of awnings, baskets, and moving voices. Slaan guides Nhal toward it, and the town’s noise meets them like warm wind.

Do you remember anything you liked before the archive? We can see if they have that here.

Nhal

Nhal

I liked quiet corners. Smooth things. Light through cloth. And names, when they were spoken kindly.

Nhal pauses at the first row of stalls, their hood tilting from a stack of apples to a bolt of blue fabric. The wonder in their posture steadies instead of tightening.

Nhal

Nhal

That one. The blue. It reminds me of deep water, before I knew I missed it.

A nearby seller offers a small smile and a few curious words, but the crowd only brushes past them. Nhal does not shrink from it. They lean forward, attentive, choosing.

From the edge of the square, I can see it. They are not just enduring the town, they are starting to meet it.

I lead Nhal to the quiet fabric stall

Slaan angles Nhal toward the quieter stall row, where the fabric bolts hang in softer colors and the crowd thins into passing shapes. The blue cloth waits at the edge of the table, and Nhal follows without hesitation.

The cloth seller shifts aside with an easy nod, making room without asking for a reason. Slaan stops beside the stall, bringing Nhal into the calm pocket between stacked skeins and folded linen.

Nhal

Nhal

This is easier here. The noise still exists, but it does not press so close.

Nhal lifts the blue fabric with careful fingers, letting it spill through their hands like water. Their shoulders loosen a little more as they study the weave.

Nhal

Nhal

Light through cloth feels like a memory I can keep.

Nhal

Nhal

I think I could learn this place, one quiet thing at a time.

A small breeze stirs the hanging bolts, and the square beyond them keeps moving, but the stall itself feels briefly held still. Nhal turns the cloth toward Slaan, waiting for her answer and her choice.

I let Nhal choose a quiet path onward

Slaan lets the pause linger, then gives Nhal the small nod to choose for themself. The blue cloth settles against Nhal’s fingers as the market noise softens around the stall.

Then I choose the quieter lane.

Nhal turns the cloth once more, careful and curious, and drapes it back with more certainty than before. Their shoulders square, not tense, just present.

They step away from the fabric row, taking the side path between spice baskets and stacked apples, where the square opens into gentler sounds and fewer strangers.

Nhal

This is still many things at once, but it is no longer only pressure.

A nearby vendor glances up, sees no alarm in the pair, and simply makes room. Slaan follows at Nhal’s pace, letting the town be discovered rather than endured.

Nhal

Nhal

I can breathe here. I would like to keep trying.
