Back in the archive chamber, the dark stain on the counter twitches like a living bruise. It swells, then peels upward, thin as smoke and heavy as grief. The Merchant jerks in his restraint, staring as the residue pulls at the room itself.

The stain stretches into a thread, then a hand, then a half-formed silhouette. It does not hunt by scent or sound. It follows the path Slaan has already made through the hall, reading her recent movements from the residue like a map.

Ilaris

Ilaris

So that is what the mark was for. Not a warning. A tether.

Ilaris

Ilaris

I kept it here to draw the watcher, and now it has drawn me instead.

The figure in the stain sharpens, and the truth lands hard. Ilaris is not a victim of the archive, not entirely. They have been feeding the trail, guiding the shadow entity toward Slaan's wake all along.

The Merchant

The Merchant

I knew that stain was wrong.

The floor seam groans wider beneath them. The iron door keeps shivering. The chamber is no longer hiding the route below, it is opening for whatever has been invited through.

Slaan rushes the stain and wraps both arms around the half-made shape. The shadow does not flinch away, it shivers through her embrace, cold as cellar stone and strangely steady beneath the trembling hall.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Warm. Solid. Real enough to answer.

Ilaris

Ilaris

You can still call me back from the edge, then.

The silhouette tightens into a clearer form inside her arms, the hood, the shoulders, the tension in a body that has forgotten how to be touched without threat.

Ilaris

Ilaris

I guided the trail because I wanted the watcher found. I did not expect it to find me first.

Kynes

Kynes

Then speak plain. Whose memory route is this, really?

The Merchant goes still, staring at the embrace as if seeing the shape of the lie for the first time. Nhal watches quietly, their face softening with recognition rather than alarm.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Mine. And yours, if you keep following it. The chamber remembers every curious hand that reaches for it.

The shadow in Slaan's arms steadies. It is still tethered to the hall, but no longer only as a lurking stain, it has a voice, a name, and a choice to make.

" I think I wove part of you into the thread of the spells on accident, can you forgive me Ilaris!" I hug the entity like one hugs a grandma

Slaan tightens the hug, careful and earnest, like she is trying to steady a spooked elder through the cold. The shadow in her arms softens at once, and the hall seems to breathe around that choice.

Slaan

Slaan

I wove part of you into the spell thread by accident.

Slaan

Slaan

I think I tangled part of you into my spellwork by accident. Please forgive me, Ilaris.

Ilaris

Ilaris

You speak as if accident and guilt are the same thing. They are not.

Ilaris

Ilaris

But yes, I forgive you.

The words settle cleanly. The shadow’s outline firms, then loosens, no longer pulling at the hall with hidden teeth. Slaan’s dagger hilt flashes once at her side, the tiny skyblue sparkle catching in the dark.

Nhal

Nhal

That sounds like a burden set down, not a wound opened.

Kynes

Kynes

Good. Then tell us the rest, Ilaris, while the chamber is still listening.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Gladly. I have been afraid of my own thread for longer than I can name.

I set about undoing Ilaris from the spell weave I explain that our shadow spells are pretty much shadow entities and we work in harmony with each other. "You should have told me at the hall" I tell Ilaris " or was hest stopping you"

Slaan lifts two fingers and traces the spellwork in the air, loosening the thread around Ilaris with careful, practiced precision. The shadow around them unwinds without snapping, as if it recognizes a familiar hand.

Slaan

Slaan

Our shadow spells are shadow entities, in a sense. We work in harmony with them.

Slaan

Slaan

You should have told me at the Hall. Or was Hest stopping you?

Ilaris

Ilaris

Not stopping, no. Watching. Measuring. Hest preferred I remain useful, and silent.

Ilaris

Ilaris

It was easier to hide inside the weave than to risk being heard through it.

The last of the tether peels free from Ilaris’s outline and sinks into the floor seam like soot in water. Their shape holds on its own now, no longer tugged by the chamber's memory.

Ilaris

Ilaris

So, yes. I should have spoken sooner. I was afraid the Hall would answer back through me.
