Nhal braces both hands against the pulsing ward-stones as the Hall of Welcome shudders around them. Violet light seeps through the seams in the walls, and the whole archive draws in a slow, living breath.

This is no simple rebound. It is waking.

The floor pulse beneath Slaan’s hand resolves into a larger pattern, lines spreading outward like veins. The architecture answers in a low hum, and the room seems to turn its attention toward her.

The weave is gone. Something underneath it is moving.

A soft shimmer gathers in the air above the central aisle, then sharpens into a ghost of motion, a memory made visible. Mara is not there in flesh, but the hall releases her presence in a brief, unmistakable echo, like a name finally found.

Mara was here. The archive is showing us what it held back.

The violet glow widens, and the hall’s walls flex as if the building itself is listening. Whatever sleeps beneath the Hall is no longer passive. It knows they are looking.

Slaan eases her will through the ward-stones, and the hall answers with a pinprick of violet light at the center aisle. The shimmer widens into a thumb-sized opening, not a doorway, but a living seam aimed straight into the archive’s root.

Beyond it, ancient stone glows like buried veins, and a low pulse beats back through the gap, slow and waiting.

The chamber exhales. Dust lifts in a faint spiral, and the hall’s shiver turns sharp with purpose, as if something below has felt the invitation.

Nhal lifts their head from the ward-stones, breath catching, while Ilaris takes one step closer, studying the opening with wary recognition.

That is not a fracture. It is a reply.

The seam steadies, then flickers wider for a heartbeat, and a thread of cold pressure slips through before Slaan reins it in.

The cost lands at once, a thin line of blood beads at Slaan’s nose, and the ward-light around her hand gutters once, as if the portal has taken a sip of her focus.

Slaan draws in a careful breath and threads her spell toward the ward-stones rather than the seam below. Violet light gathers at her fingertips, then sinks into the carved stonework like water finding cracks.

The nearest stones answer at once. A narrow oval opens in their surface, not a wound, but a clear window of light showing the old lattice beneath the Hall.

The pulse through the floor quickens, then steadies into a pleading rhythm, as if the chamber is listening for permission instead of repair.

Nhal straightens from the ward-line, their face softening with recognition. Ilaris steps closer, eyes fixed on the opening, one hand hovering as though they might speak to it.

Nhal

It wants to be heard.

This is not a lock. It is asking us to look.

The stone-window widens just enough to reveal a deeper chamber of aligned sigils and waiting channels, each one still humming with patient intent. The hall falls quiet around the new shape of the question.

I look into the deeper chamber of sigils, and I ask Nhal what this place wants.

Slaan leans into the oval window, and the lit lattice below answers with rows of patient sigils, braided like script and bone. The floor’s pulse moves through the pattern, not as force, but as a careful beat waiting to be understood.

Slaan asks what this place wants.

Nhal

Nhal

It wants witness. Not repair, not control, witness... and consent.

The chamber shivers at the word, then settles. A thin thread of violet light draws itself from one sigil to the next, showing a path through the lower lattice rather than a lock.

Ilaris

It was made to remember people as they came, and to open only when they answered honestly. That is why it has been hurting. It has been asking for help for a long time.

Slaan

The sigils are arranged like a plea, not a trap.

Nhal’s hand drifts closer to the opening, then stops, careful not to press. Their shoulders loosen as the lattice steadies, but the wait beneath the floor keeps its slow rhythm, as if listening for Slaan’s reply.
