The landing opens wide beneath the road, a shelf of old stone washed in steady violet light. The runes do not flare or warn, they simply breathe, calm and even.

Slaan slows beside the wall, boots quiet on the dust. Mara keeps her shoulder against the stone and studies her with that same patient, measuring look.

Mara

Mara

You move like you trust the dark more than most folk trust daylight.

Nhal

The patterns are gentler here. They repeat like a memory that wants to be kept.

Nhal’s translucent fingers trace the runes without disturbing them. The purple glow slides over their hand, then settles again, as if pleased to be read without being pressed.

Slaan

Slaan

The stone is warm for something buried this deep.

Mara

Mara

I was not sure what I would find below the road. This is quieter than I expected.

Nhal

Nhal

Quiet is good. Quiet lets things become themselves.

For a moment, the three of them simply stand in the glow, breathing together, the deep earth holding its silence like a promise.

"I move through the dark the way I do is because well, assassin by trade. The mage part was my father's idea, the assassin part was my middle finger to him" I say. " I slip my arm around nhals waist" let's go find some non euclidian geography "

Slaan’s words settle into the violet hush, plain and sharp as a blade laid on cloth.

Slaan

Slaan

I move through the dark the way I do because I am an assassin by trade. The mage part was my father’s idea, the assassin part was my answer.

Mara

Mara

That is a very expensive way to introduce yourself.

Nhal’s shoulders loosen. The translucent hand at the rune wall lifts away, then returns to the stone with new confidence.

Then we are not only following a tunnel. We are choosing what kind of path deserves us.

Slaan

Slaan

Come on. Let’s find some non-Euclidean geography.

Mara’s mouth curves, and she falls into step without hesitation. Nhal turns from the runes and matches Slaan’s pace, close enough now to share the same pool of light.

I keep descending into the buried passage,I ask Mara if she trusts this path.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan keeps descending, and the violet runes slide past her boots like a patient current.

Slaan

Slaan

Do you trust this path, Mara?

Mara

Mara

I trust what it asks of us. It does not feel like a trap.

Nhal pauses with a hand near the carved wall, then nods once at the old marks running beneath the stone.

Nhal

Nhal

It feels chosen. Not found. That matters.

Mara

Then our mission is not to break it open. It is to understand who built a road that waits for the right feet.

Slaan steps lower into the glow, and the three of them move as one, the map’s line and the ancient runes briefly aligning in the same direction.

I ask Mara what this road is for

Slaan

What is this road for?

Slaan’s question settles into the violet hush, and Mara slows beside her instead of answering at once. The runes underfoot brighten in a clean line, as if the passage itself is listening.

Mara

Mara

For carrying memories safely, if I read it right. For moving what should not be left to rot in one place.

Nhal

Nhal

A road like this is not for travel alone. It is for choice, for consent, for keeping a path open without tearing it apart.

Mara

Mara

That is why we follow it gently. Someone built this to guide, not to seize.

The answer lands between them, and the shared mission sharpens from simple curiosity into stewardship. Slaan feels the cost of the question too, a faint sting as the old stair dust dries in her throat from speaking in the cold.
