The dragon claws at the stone, but the spectral bonds hold. Bren keeps her blade steady, and the huddled figure finally gives up the rags at its face.

Pale features emerge under the hood, old and sharp with fear. A sigil ringed with dust glows faintly at the figure’s throat, tied to the floor markings Slaan notices at last.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Do not let it break free. This vault is not a tomb, it is a lock.

Slaan

Slaan

The floor marks and the throat-sigil match.

The dragon twists toward the figure, snout straining against the spell, as if afraid of the answer more than the blade.

Bren

Bren

Then speak plain. What is locked in here, and why is a dragon guarding it?

Ilaris

Ilaris

A door beneath Phandelver. And something on the other side that learns by hunger.

The chamber seems to tighten around that word, and Slaan sees the choice clearly, question the figure, or force the vault open before whatever waits below stirs.

Slaan eases her hand down, keeping her voice level. The violet haze trembles between her and the dragon as she asks if it will hold to a truce if she lets it loose.

Veyr

Veyr

If you free me, I do not tear the chamber apart. I want the thing beneath this vault alive more than I want your blood.

The beast’s answer comes rough, but certain. One of the spectral bands flickers as Slaan shifts her grip, and a sharp sting of strain bites through her wrist.

Bren

Bren

That is a bargain, not a prayer. Say what you know of the thing below, and say it cleanly.

Veyr

Veyr

It feeds through old wards and broken vaults. The archive below Phandelver does not keep books only, it keeps appetites. Something down there learns from every opening.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Then you understand why I chained it here. The locks are failing, and the hall above is already a mouth.

The figure’s throat-sigil pulses once, dim and gold, and the floor markings answer with a deeper glow. Everyone in the chamber falls still, waiting for Slaan’s choice.

As the golden light from the sigil flares, the hood slips back from the figure's face, revealing the weathered, deeply lined features of an elderly human man.

Slaan

Slaan

He looks like he has been trapped in these vaults for decades, perhaps even centuries.

Ilaris

Ilaris

I was a scholar of the archives long before the House of Xar fell, and I have paid the price for my curiosity in silence.

"so Grandpa, you decided to chain and dragon here because?"

Slaan

So, you chained a dragon here for what, exactly?

Ilaris

Ilaris

Not for power. For a lock. For duty. For years, I kept what lay below from learning the shape of the world above.

The elder’s throat works around old pain. The glowing marks underfoot answer him with a slow, uneasy pulse.

Ilaris

Ilaris

The vault is bound to the archives. It feeds on openings, on questions, on hunger given a way in.

Bren shifts her stance beside Slaan, watching the dragon, then the sigil, then the scholar’s hands.

Ilaris

Ilaris

If this seal breaks cleanly, Phandelver loses more than stone. It loses the last barrier I could build.

For a breath, the shadows around his shoulders thin again, and Slaan catches the line of a hidden rune at his collar.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Look there, if you want the truth. My mark is not from the library. It is from what was locked inside it.

I release the spell.

Slaan loosens her hold, and the shadowy bands unravel from the dragon in a slow, smoking drift. The sigils underfoot flare once, then settle to a harsher glow.

The dragon surges upright into the space left by the magic, claws scraping stone. Bren snaps a step forward, blade hand ready, but holds back when it does not lunge.

Veyr

Veyr

At last. Breath returns. Keep your distance, little mage.

The scholar flinches as the freed shadows peel back from his collar. For a heartbeat, the rune at his throat burns clearly, and the darkness around him answers with a hungry twitch.

Ilaris

Ilaris

Do not let it see the opening. If it wakes fully, it follows the path of every mind in this chamber.

From the floor below the seal, a deep answering thrum rolls through the stone, like something below has just noticed the room above and turned toward it.

I am Slaan. I never met a dragon before. Sorry about the muzzle.

Veyr

Your apology comes late, little mage. But it is not nothing.

The dragon lowers its head a fraction, not in trust, but in wary appraisal. Its wings twitch once, then settle close to its sides.

Ilaris

Ilaris

So. She speaks plainly. That is rarer than wisdom in these halls.

Bren keeps her blade ready, but her eyes flick from the dragon to the scholar, catching the strange hush between them. The glow underfoot deepens, and the scholar’s collar rune answers with a faint, ugly pulse.

Veyr

Veyr

If you want amends, mage, ask the right question. I guard what is beneath this stone because I have seen what feeds there.

The scholar’s shadow stirs over the floor sigils, and for one instant the veil around him parts, showing not a face but a tangle of pulsing darkness beneath the hood.

" what feeds here, I am Slaan, and you are" speaking with reverence and awe

Slaan

What feeds here... I am Slaan, and you are?

Her words land softly in the ringing chamber. The dragon lifts its head, listening despite itself, while the scholar’s hood tilts a fraction toward her.

Veyr

Veyr

You ask reverently for a thing that should not be named lightly. That is wiser than most.

Bren’s blade eases a hair lower, not relaxed, only less ready to strike. The thrum below the seal answers in a slow, hungry pulse.

Ilaris

Ilaris

And I am the fool who studied the appetite too closely. The archives fed on openings. This vault was built to keep the lesson buried.

For a blink, the scholar’s collar rune flashes, and the darkness under his hood parts just enough to show a second, deeper shadow moving inside it.

Veyr

Veyr

You seek its name. I have only ever heard its hunger. It wears many old masks, and one of them is not far beneath us.

The scholar turns one bound shoulder toward the floor, as if indicating a hidden seam there. He stops short of the truth, but the gesture opens a path: there is something under the seal, and he knows where it breathes.

" oh I was asking for your name, unless you wish me to call you dragon." I pause. " I guess the name of the hungry thing too."

Silence holds for a breath, then the dragon gives a low, rough sound that might be amusement if it were anyone else. The scholar’s head dips once, as if conceding the point.

Veyr

Veyr

Names matter. You may call me Veyr.

Ilaris

Ilaris

And I am called Ilaris, though centuries have made the name feel borrowed.

Veyr

Veyr

As for the thing below us, its oldest hunger was once named the Vault Eater. The archives stripped the shape away, but the appetite remained.

Ilaris

Ilaris

It feeds on openings, on curiosity, on every hand that thinks a door is only a door. That is why this chamber was made into a lock.

Bren lowers her blade another fraction, eyes fixed on the seam in the stone. Beneath the floor, the deeper pulse answers the names as if it has heard them too.
