A month of steady calm has settled over the Hall of Welcome. By the campfire in a side chamber, Slaan and Nhal rest beneath gentler ward-light when Ilaris arrives, weary, clutching a heavy sealed scroll case.

Ilaris

Ilaris

You need to hear this now. The archive is stable, yes, but the lower vaults have begun to breathe. The stone moves like a lung, and the town feels it.

The sealed case thuds against the floor. A cold draft slips through the chamber, and the fire bends low.

Nhal

Nhal

Breathing means pressure, or a path. Which one do you think it is?

Before Ilaris can answer, the far wall answers for him. A thin seam of black-violet light opens between the stones, and something tall and wrong pushes one pale hand through first, testing the room like a blade seeking cloth.

The Rift-Thief

The Rift-Thief

Too many keepers. Too much welcome. I will take the root that feeds it.

The seam widens with a hiss of grinding stone. Ilaris tightens around the scroll case, and the hostile intruder steps half-way into the hall, hungry eyes fixed on Slaan.

Slaan snaps her spell into the widening seam. Pale force lashes out, striking the Rift-Thief’s eyes and joints at once.

The intruder jerks hard, half inside and half out, then stalls as spectral bands coil around their torso and arms.

Black-violet light gutters, and the wall shudders with a dry crack. The hall’s welcome pulse flickers once in alarm.

...

The Rift-Thief goes rigid, blinded and pinned at the breach, unable to force deeper in.

But the backlash bites Slaan’s casting hand, leaving a sharp sting through her wrist and a taste of ash in the air.

Ilaris

Ilaris

It holds. For now. Can you keep it there?

Slaan

Yes.

Slaan steps closer to the seam, keeping the bindings taut with a steady hand despite the sting in her wrist.

The Rift-Thief hangs suspended in the breach, its shape caught between wall and hall, while the ward-lights ripple gold and violet across its masked face.

And you are?

For a moment, the intruder stops straining. The hall’s shiver passes through the stone like a held breath.

...A thief of crossings. A listener at broken edges.

Then speak plainly. You have already crossed into our care.

Nhal’s attention sharpens, and the warm ward-light steadies around the pinned figure as the Hall waits for what the stranger will reveal next.

" does as Ilaris says" I draw both daggers and cast posion on them " now talk." I tell the intruder

Slaan obeys Ilaris’s steadiness, then draws both daggers in one smooth motion. Violet poison threads over the blades, dark and glossy in the ward-light.

Now talk.

The Rift-Thief’s masked head jerks toward the gleam. Its restraint tightens against the breach, and the wall seam gives a faint, unsettled shiver.

Careful. Crossings remember sharp things.

Good. Fear makes it answer plainly.

I came because the lower vaults are loosening. Something in the Hall calls through the fractures, and I followed the taste of it.

Nhal’s posture softens by a fraction, while the warm ward-light steadies around the seam, listening as much as warning.
