The quiet path ends exactly where the setup promised, in a room of crumbling House Domini statues. Stale air presses in. Nhal steps into the center, and their outline shivers like smoke in a draft.

Their shadow stretches across the floor, too long, too hungry. The dim light in the chamber seems to thin where it touches them, as if something is drinking it down.

Nhal

Nhal

Not yet. I can still keep shape.

Kynes recoils a half-step. Bren’s hand tightens near her blade, her gaze fixed on the flickering edges of Nhal’s form. The statues around them stand mute, their stone faces cracked by age and memory.

Then the truth lands. Nhal has not been guiding them out of kindness. They have been feeding on the archive’s memories, taking careful bites of thought and history to hold themselves together.

Bren

Bren

You were using us.

Kynes

Kynes

No. Worse. You were starving here.

Nhal’s shadow curls back toward the statues, as if drawn to the old stone and all it remembers. The room turns tense and still, every breath suddenly sounding like a confession.

Sever Nhal's tether to the archive

Can I see nhals teather that binds her to the archive?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 12)

Slaan

Slaan

The shadows are not just cast by the light. They are anchored.

Slaan narrows her focus, piercing the veil of the room's dim light. Beneath the shifting smoke of Nhal's form, a jagged, violet tether pulses like a raw nerve, snaking directly into the stone floor and weaving deep into the archive's foundation.

It is not just a connection. It is a siphon, drawing the very history of the room upward to sustain the entity, and the trail of marks they followed is merely the surface of a much larger, hungrier web.

I calmly draw a circle in the center large enough for 3 people. And I put a hand full of the void-fed snacks in the center and call nhal over. Then I go into a story of the past six months on how I got here and why I came. And pretty much the journal I kept was all bull shit because my father wanted to know what I was up to . I also explain that I am undoing the teather because it increases the hunger a 1000 fold, that her hunger will now be new experience.

Slaan kneels in the dust and sketches a clean circle with two fingers, then sets a small heap of void-fed snacks in its center like an offering. The line looks tidy for a heartbeat, but the stone drinks at its edge, and the circle begins to thin.

She calls Nhal over and speaks through the shape of her own path, the last six months, the false journal, the father who wanted answers, the reason she came. Her words land plain and steady, but the archive stirs under them.

Nhal

Nhal

You carried a lie to feed another lie... and still you came this far for truth.

Nhal leans toward the circle, strain tugging through their fading outline. The violet tether brightens at the same time, as if it feeds harder on being named.

Bren

Bren

If you mean to cut that tether, do it now, before it learns the shape of our thinking.

Slaan answers by pressing her palm to the unfinished ring and forcing more intent into it, but the line skews instead of closing. The circle holds only half a breath, then cracks open at one side, its edge slumping into useless dust.

Nhal

Nhal

The hunger is not gone. But this... this is a different kind of feeding.

Confront Nhal about their hunger

I see my mistake I redo the spell on nhals teather so it grants her free will and her feeding will be on her own experiences

Slaan changes the shape of the working instead of forcing the failed ring to hold. The chalk dust lifts in a thin spiral, catching violet light as her magic finds Nhal's tether and begins to reweave it.

The bright cord at Nhal's feet frays, then splits cleanly from the archive stone. For the first time, the pull on their outline eases, and the tether stops drinking from the room.

The severed strand does not vanish. It turns inward, knotting around Nhal like a second path, and the hush around them changes from hunger to raw possibility.

Nhal

Nhal

I feel... separate. Less held. More mine.

Nhal draws a careful breath and straightens, no longer tugged toward the floor. Their hands open toward the remaining snacks, not in reflex now, but in testing curiosity.

Bren

Bren

So the archive loses its leash. Good. But what did you give it instead?

Above them, the violet seam in the stone steadies into a thinner pulse, no longer anchored to Nhal's feet. The chamber waits on the answer, quiet except for the new, uncertain way Nhal looks at the room.
