Slaan steps into the seam as the stone tightens around her. The spiral stair breathes cold air, and the violet trail pulses ahead like a heartbeat in the dark.

Kynes moves first, one hand brushing the wall, his gaze fixed on the flicker of marks etched into the dust. Bren follows close, silent and ready, her shoulders angled toward the next turn.

Nhal

Nhal

It is not a path. It is an invitation.

The trail brightens at the bend, and Slaan sees it, fresh scratches in blackened wax, the same hiding mark from the seal, repeated deeper below. The archive is not wandering aimlessly, it is being led.

Slaan

Slaan

The marks point to a watcher below.

A thin draft rises from somewhere under the stairs, carrying the smell of old paper and something wetter, stranger. The violet pulse slows, as if waiting for them to choose whether to answer it.

Kynes

Kynes

There. The trail is deliberate. If we keep following it, we reach the hand that wrote the warnings.

Bren lifts her chin toward the dark below, then starts down again. The next turn disappears into shadow, and the source of the archive’s lure waits deeper in the vault.

✓ Quest Accepted

Slaan keeps her pace, and the stair answers with a slow, sinking tremor. The violet marks stop behaving like a trail and start behaving like a threshold.

Kynes lowers his hand from the wall as the air changes. Bren’s boots meet the last turn, and the darkness below opens into a cramped chamber lined with old shelves and black wax seals.

The watcher is there at last, not as a body but as a presence in the room, visible in the way the dust leans and the marks on the stone brighten to meet Slaan’s arrival.

Nhal tilts their head toward the shelves, calm but intent, as if listening to a memory speak through the walls.

Nhal

Nhal

This is where it keeps its face hidden. Do not let the room choose what you notice first.

Bren slows beside Kynes, her attention fixed on the sealed records and the narrow central space. The air feels tight with stored thoughts, and the path that looked like descent now feels like a choice between tools and truth.

Kynes

Kynes

We are here. Now we learn whether this route keeps guiding us, or strips us before we can speak.

Reach the watcher below the stair

“Using my shadow tenticles as extra arms, I draw a very intricate protection circle large enough for myself, Kynes, Bren and nhal to stand in”

Slaan spreads her hands, and shadow threads spill from her sleeves like obedient smoke. They lengthen, split, and braid into a ring on the floor, tracing a clean circle that surrounds the four of them without touching the shelves.

The violet marks catch on the new boundary and run along it, no longer drifting toward the chamber’s center. The air inside the ring steadies, as if the room has been told where it ends.

Bren

Bren

A proper ward. Tight work, and no wasted motion.

Kynes

Kynes

She has given us a line the archive can see.

Nhal’s gaze follows the shadow braid with a small, approving tilt, then moves to the shelves beyond it, reading the chamber as if it has started speaking back.

Nhal

Nhal

Good. Now the room has to meet us honestly.

For one breath, the ward holds. Then the nearest shelf gives a soft, dry click, and a sealed drawer shifts open by a finger’s width.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn what the sealed drawers conceal

“I telekineticlly pull the drawer to us, letting it stop in front of the circle. " Nhal are you related to the hunger under the vaults?" I ask”

Slaan lifts two fingers, and the cracked drawer glides free of the shelf as if tugged by an invisible thread. It stops just outside the ward circle, hovering at arm’s reach, the black wax seal facing them like a deliberate invitation.

Slaan

Slaan

Nhal, are you related to the hunger under the vaults?

The drawer hangs steady. No alarm answers, only the soft drag of dust and the archive’s hush pressing in around the ring.

Nhal

Nhal

Related? No. But I know its appetite. I have watched it feed on the curious, and I have learned how it likes to be led.

Bren

Bren

That sounds awfully close to companionship.

Nhal

Nhal

Closer to trespass. I was made here, by choices I do not wholly forgive.

Kynes

Kynes

Then tell us what this drawer hides, and why it is waiting for us.

Nhal

Nhal

A route. And a price. Some paths in this archive open only if you are willing to leave what you carry behind.

“" say it plainly, what is the price" I look around " I'll take answers from anyone." I say”

Slaan keeps her voice even and asks for the price in plain terms. The chamber seems to listen with her, the ward holding steady while the drawer’s seal tilts toward them like an answer.

Nhal’s gaze drifts from Slaan to the shelves and back again. "No coin," they say. "Only burden. The path takes what keeps your thoughts fixed to the world above."

Bren

Bren

So, not treasure. Gear, then. Or something personal.

Kynes

Kynes

Be exact. What does it ask us to leave behind?

Nhal lifts one hand and points at the corridor beyond the drawers, where the shelves narrow into a darker seam. "Anything that anchors certainty. A tool, a name, a keepsake, a vow spoken aloud. The archive prefers a lighter mind."

Slaan looks over the room as if weighing every strap and satchel against the passage ahead. The floating drawer waits, its black seal unblinking, while the violet trace along the ward edge trembles faintly in response.

Nhal

Nhal

You may ask answers of anyone here. But if you open that route, the archive will choose what it wants first.

“I take a book out of my bag." I have a journal from six months ago leading up to now. Does that count?" I ask”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Slaan slips a worn journal from her bag and holds it up over the ward, the dark cover catching the violet flicker. The archive does not snatch at it. It simply waits, as if recognizing a weight it can measure.

Slaan

Slaan

Does this count, then? It has been with me for months.

The shadow ward drinks the edge of the chamber’s light while the floating drawer tilts toward the journal. Bren shifts closer, interested despite herself, and Kynes watches Slaan’s hand instead of the passage ahead.

Nhal

Nhal

A fair offering. Not for its worth, but for its hold on you.

Slaan lets the archive take it. The journal lifts free, turns once in the air, and settles toward the open drawer without a sound.

Bren

Bren

Six months of your life, handed over like loose change. I hope the path appreciates drama.

Kynes

Kynes

Look.

As the journal sinks into the drawer, the black seal loosens its grip and the drawer face clicks open wider. Inside lie stacked folded folios, bound with more black wax and marked with the same hiding sign, a neat little inheritance of the watcher’s trail.
