Super Hero Rhapsody: 1975

The records annex hums under fluorescent light, all white walls and locked glass. Sally and Amilia slip past the first checkpoint as a legal envelope brushes Amilia’s coat pocket, heavy with the evidence packets. Ahead, a directory board lists the sublevels in neat federal type, and sublevel three sits behind two more security gates.

A badge scanner on the wall flashes amber, then red, as a guard farther down the hall turns toward the alarm panel. Sally spots a service alcove and a maintenance ladder stamped with fresh Department seals, the kind used to hide a route after hours.

Amilia slides the envelope into her bag and nods once toward the ladder. From below, a faint metallic thud travels up through the floor, like a door locking somewhere deep in the building. The Department is tightening containment.

Sally presses her palm to the seam and lets herself slip through. The wall takes her in like cold water, and the annex noise drops away behind the concrete.

She lands in a narrow records spine, concrete on one side, metal shelving on the other, with filing carts stacked under a strip of dim emergency light.

Below the grating, sublevel three stretches out in sharp little echoes, cart wheels, a distant door latch, the hush of hard copy and locked steel.

Amilia stays in the annex corridor beyond the wall, just out of frame, while Sally’s route cuts directly into the heart of the records stack.

A nearby access lamp flickers once, then steadies. On the far wall, a stenciled directory marks records vault access in plain federal text, half hidden by pipes.

Somewhere above, the alarm continues to build, but down here the vault door waits within reach, and the system is about to decide whether to keep quiet or slam shut.
