Super Hero Rhapsody: 1975

The red light hardens into a steady glow. Sally and Devlan push into the records wing, and the air tastes like hot dust and ozone.

Mrs. Vale steps out from behind the server rack, calm as a clerk at closing time. Her eyes burn with synthetic light, fixed on Sally.

She lifts one hand. The metal doorframes bend, liquefy, and seal with a grinding shriek, cutting off the hallway behind them.

Devlan raises his pistol, but the walls ripple again, and a sheet of warped steel folds between him and Vale. Sally stands in the center of the trap, with the woman who built the cover-up now openly revealing the power that cages them.

The words hit the sealed room like a thrown blade. Sally straightens, the drive and files held close, and the red indicator light flashes across her face like a warning and a dare.

Devlan shifts at Sally's shoulder, gun still up, as warped steel groans around the room. The file cabinets rattle under the pressure, and the pulsing hardcase relay in the evidence stack gives a faint, sick glow.

Sally does not give an inch. The air around her tightens, her stance settling into a fighter's balance as the first cracks spider through the nearest metal seam.

Vale's expression hardens. The room answers with a deeper metallic hum, and the sealed doorway bows inward as if something on the other side is pressing back.

Sally launches forward in a blur, the floor shuddering under her stride. Her boot drives into Vale’s midsection, and the supervisor folds backward into the server rack with a sharp metallic clang.

The drive slips free from Vale’s grasp and skids across the tiles toward Devlan. One of the warped steel seams in the wall snaps wider, and the room’s hum stutters.

Vale recovers fast, one hand slamming to the cabinet frame as the metal bends around her fingers. The pulsing hardcase relay flashes brighter, then flickers weakly.

Devlan snatches the drive and fires once toward the ceiling lock, sparks showering down. Sally is left squarely in front of Vale, with the cracked seam groaning wider and the red indicator light blinking between them.

Sally lunges for the flickering relay before Vale can pull it back into the wall. Her hand clamps down on the casing, and the whole unit jerks free with a crack of snapping wire.

She drives it into the floor once. The relay splinters, lights strobing red across the cabinets as the weak pulse dies into static.

Vale’s fingers twitch against the bent metal, but the room’s hum stutters out of her grip. The warped seam stops widening.

Devlan looks up from the drive, stunned, as sparks rain from the ceiling lock and then fade.

Vale straightens slowly, now cut off and glaring through the blinking red indicator light. The sealed room holds for a breath, waiting for what Sally does next.
