Back in the hotel room, Devlan drops onto the bed fully dressed and is out in seconds. The lamp throws tired amber over his face. Sally changes and heads for the secluded hot tub, the rail yard grime still clinging to her skin.

The water is warm and chemical-clean. Under it, the pool lights begin that same precise flicker again, steady as a metronome. It is the exact cadence from the lab data, the same pattern she has seen in the relay traces.

The tub wall hums faintly through the water. Sally feels the vibration in her bones, like the room itself is listening. Somewhere beneath the hotel, current is moving with purpose, not failure.

The meaning hits hard, clean, impossible. This is not a broken grid. The Department is using the conductivity in the water to sync her biological signature back to its central server. The experiments were never just observation, they are live access.

In the room, Devlan stirs once and mumbles in his sleep, still unaware. In the tub, the flicker keeps time, patient and mechanical, as if the building is waiting for Sally to notice the door it has just opened.

Sally reaches past the rim, lifts the forgotten joint, and flicks a small flame alive with practiced ease. The smoke curls up with the steam, softening the room for a moment.

The first pull is ordinary, almost merciful. In the bed, Devlan sleeps on, and the water keeps its patient, secret rhythm below her feet.

Sally twists the hot tub control, and the jets kick in with a low churn. The water rises around her in a steady rush, loosening the room into steam and salt-warm noise.

The joint burns down to a last orange thread as Sally sinks deeper, the hidden pulse still ticking through the water beneath her.

Sally climbs out of the steaming water, leaving the pulse to throb on without her. She changes, lets the room quiet down, and slips into bed while Devlan’s breathing stays slow and even in the dark.
