One month later, Devlan’s muscle car hums along the highway outside Seattle, the sky low and orange over dark firs. The city’s glow sits ahead like a promise. Sally rides beside him as the first case file rests between them.

First day on the job, and Seattle already looks like it wants something from us.

The car dips off the main road onto a wet service pullout beneath a wind-bent sign for a motel and diner. Salt air from the Sound mixes with rain and exhaust. Devlan kills the engine, and the quiet lands hard.

The folder is stamped with the Department seal.

Devlan Mitchel

Our contact says a scientist vanished two nights ago. No body, no ransom, no witness who wants to stay visible.

He taps the folder, then nods toward the city lights ahead. A neon sign across the road flickers on, buzzing blue in the gathering dark. Something in the case file has been flagged with red ink, fresh and urgent.

That mark was added after we left Portland. Want to open it here, or drive in blind?

Find the vanished scientist

I scan the motel parking lot for any signs of surveillance.

Sally turns her gaze across the lot. The motel windows are dark, but the rain catches on a rear-view mirror that does not belong to any parked car.

Sally

Sally

That mirror is aimed wrong.

She traces it to a black van half-hidden by the diner wall, its windshield wipers still, its dashboard dark. A tiny red pulse blinks behind the glass, steady as a heartbeat.

Sally spots a second tell, a man inside the motel lobby pretending to read a paper while his phone camera stays pointed at the pullout.

She clocks a third watcher in the open, a tourist by the soda machine who is not looking at the menu at all, just the car.

The scan lands cleanly, but the edge of Sally's focus catches on something hidden in the rain, and it costs her a split second of strain behind the eyes.

Devlan feels the shift beside her, his hand tightening on the folder as Seattle waits in the dark. 'You see them too?'

What should we do? Should we sneak up on em or go guns a balzin'?

Should we sneak up on them, or go in loud?

Devlan Mitchel

Devlan Mitchel

Neither, if we can help it. We let them think we are still deciding.

Devlan tips the folder a fraction toward the windshield, using it like cover while his eyes track the van, the lobby, and the soda machine in one sweep.

Devlan Mitchel

Three watchers means a net, not a coincidence.

He nods once toward the diner wall, where the black van sits with its red pulse blinking under the rain, and then toward the motel entrance.

We go in looking normal, but we do not split up. If they are waiting, they are waiting for a reason.

Outside, the tourist at the soda machine shifts his weight and keeps watching the car. The lobby camera does not move, but the phone behind the paper stays trained on them.

You got it..... Partner. She says with a wink than they both walk into the hotel casually keep the case file hidden

Keep it casual. Keep the file hidden.

Sally eases out of the car with the folder tucked flat under her coat, and Devlan falls in beside her like they are just another tired pair checking in late.

They cross the wet lot without hurry. Rain freckles the black van’s windows, and the red pulse inside it keeps blinking under the dashboard.

The tourist by the soda machine pretends not to stare, but his reflection tracks them in the glass as they pass.

At the motel entrance, Devlan reaches for the door first, not looking back, while Sally slips through with the file still buried and unseen.

Inside, the lobby is bright, cheap, and too still. A clerk at the desk watches them arrive, and the phone behind the paper continues to face the door.

Devlan gives the clerk a practiced nod, but the red glow from the parked van washes briefly across the rain-dark glass behind them, like something outside is already answering their arrival.

Is the clerk watching us for them?

NO (Likely, rolled 84)

The clerk barely glances up from his ledger, his attention entirely consumed by a stack of invoices and the rhythmic hum of the lobby heater. He is just a man working a graveyard shift, oblivious to the tension radiating from the two strangers standing before his desk.

I ask if we can get our room key

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 63)

We would like to check in, can we get our room key?

Room 204. It is the only one left that is not currently undergoing maintenance.

The clerk slides a heavy brass key across the counter, his hand lingering on the wood as he glances nervously toward the lobby window where the van remains parked.

Sir, are you ok?

Sir, are you alright?

The Clerk

The Clerk

He blinks, caught off guard, then lets out a shaky breath. Not the question he expects from a stranger at the counter.

The Clerk

The Clerk

I, uh... yeah. Sorry. Just tired. Long night.

His shoulders loosen a fraction. He slides the ledger aside and looks at Sally more directly, as if deciding she is safer than the window.

The Clerk

The Clerk

You two driving through, or staying long?

Devlan Mitchel

Devlan Mitchel

Just one night. If the room's decent.

The clerk gives a thin, grateful nod, and for a moment the lobby feels less like a checkpoint and more like a tired man trying to finish his shift.

Devlyn and I go to our room, lock the door, and check the case file

Devlan takes the key first, then hands it to Sally without comment. The clerk ducks his gaze back to the ledger, pretending the lobby is empty.

Sally and Devlan cross the thin carpet to their room, the hallway dim and sour with old detergent. A passing ice machine hums behind a fire door, then quiets.

Inside, Sally locks the deadbolt, then the chain. The tiny room clicks into a seal of privacy, with one rattling window and one battered bed.

Sally

Sally

The file is still dry.

Devlan sets the case file on the bedspread and flips it open. The red mark on the cover catches the lamp light like a fresh warning.

Devlan Mitchel

Devlan Mitchel

All right. Let’s see what Seattle is hiding.

He spreads the pages flat. A photo, a name, and a lab address stare up from the folder, the first hard lead landing between them.
