Mark V kneels beside the terminal, his sensors stuttering as he traces the signal into a locked directory labeled with a Department seal. The Rose stays at the door, thorned hands ready, watching the dark hall behind them.

Sally reaches for the casing. The pulse spikes, then spits a fragment of corrupted text onto the screen, a routing chain ending in a buried medical index and a redacted birth file. One line flashes clear, then vanishes.

Inside the terminal, a second archive begins to surface, tagged for biological origin records. Whatever the Department built into Sally, this node is the first lock on the door.

Sally yanks both hands into the open casing and tears the bundled control cables free in one brutal pull. The terminal spasms, its green trace stuttering hard enough to throw sparks across the wet floor.

The screen floods with scrambled red text, then the locked directory banner flickers dead. Mark V jerks back as his scanner goes quiet in his hand.

A hidden compartment behind the terminal clicks open, revealing a narrow data key and a sealed reference strip stamped with the buried medical index. The humming in Sally's head drops to a faint, distant throb.

From deeper in the chamber, a relay light turns from steady red to a frantic blink, warning the Department that the line has been cut.
