The Rose

Rain needles the industrial lot as thorny hedges wall off the exits. The Rose steps through the wet glare, red leotard bright against brick and puddles. Milton Voss recoils, and Devlan shifts in front of Sally on instinct.

The Rose

The Rose

Nobody moves. Unauthorized activity near a government facility is bad enough. Hand over the token, now.

Voss raises both hands, pale and sweating. Mara squares her shoulders beside Sally, measuring the hero, while Elias scans the thorns for a gap that is not there.

Milton Voss

That token, she knows what it is. If she sees me as part of this, I am finished.

Sally

Sally

Sally holds up the metal token instead of reaching for it.

The Rose

The Rose

That was a mistake. Someone has been moving federal evidence through my city, and you are standing in the middle of it.

The Rose’s gaze snaps to Sally, then the token, then Voss. The thorn wall tightens with a faint creak, sealing the lot like a trap as rain darkens everyone’s clothes and tempers.

I hold the token out toward The Rose to show I am not hiding anything. Tears fill my eyes. All of this is becoming a lot. I say to her crying, "I just want answers. I have no idea what's going on!"

Sally lifts the token between trembling fingers, rain beading on her hand. Her voice cracks as she offers the metal disc and asks for answers, not a fight.

The Rose

The Rose

You are standing in federal crossfire, with a marked token and a known file trail. I am not the one you should fear most.

The Rose does not take the token. She studies Sally instead, her posture easing by a fraction as she clocks the tears and the empty confusion behind them.

Mara Keene

Mara Keene

She is telling the truth about one thing. Sally did not drag us here on purpose.

The Rose

The Rose

That token is a trigger. If it is active, someone will be watching for the response.

Her eyes flick to the thorn wall, then back to Sally. The pressure does not vanish, but the hero’s stance shifts from seizure to scrutiny, as if the next move is still negotiable.

The Rose

The Rose

Give me the token, and tell me everything you know about the gray coat.

I give The Rose the metal token, than look in her eyes with my tear filled eyes. "I have no idea who that is. I woke up with no memory yesterday and have been trying to figure out what's going on and who I am ever since."

Sally lowers the token into The Rose’s hand, then meets her eyes through tears. "I have no idea who that is. I woke up with no memory yesterday, and I have been trying to figure out what is going on, and who I am, ever since."

The Rose takes the token, but her attention stays on Sally’s face. The metal disc turns once in her palm, then disappears into her coat as she keeps her stance careful, not friendly.

The Rose

The Rose

That is the first answer that makes sense tonight.

The Rose

The Rose

If you are telling the truth, then someone built this trail for you to follow, and someone else wants it buried.

Her gaze flicks to the torn page and the heavy envelope in the others’ hands, then back to Sally. The thorn wall still cages the lot, but her shoulders loosen a little.

The Rose

The Rose

I cannot clear this with a clean conscience yet, but I can stop this from becoming an arrest.

The Rose

The Rose

Show me the page with the gray coat lead, and I will hear the rest before anyone makes a mistake.

"Mara, you work with superheroes right? Can't you vouch for me?"

Mara, you work with superheroes, right? Can you vouch for me?

Sally keeps her voice low, but the lot seems to hear anyway. The thorn wall shivers in the wind behind them, and every eye waits on Mara.

Mara Keene

Mara Keene

I can vouch for the part I have seen. She is frightened, confused, and she has not lied to me.

The Rose

The Rose

That helps. It does not clear everything, but it helps.

Mara Keene

Then use it. If this is federal evidence, she is already in deeper than any of us wanted.

Mara lays the torn page flat in her palm and tilts it toward The Rose. The paper edges tremble, and a smear of rain darkens the gray coat lead.

The Rose

The Rose

I will stand beside you for this meeting, Sally. But if I put my name on it, I need the whole trail.

The Rose takes one step closer, not threatening now, just careful. Sally gets her answer, but the air has sharpened, because Mara’s quick backing has made The Rose want proof, not promises.
