Rain lashes the sedan harder, turning the streetlamp glow into a trembling smear on the wet pavement. Moran keeps one hand on the car roof, watching the sealed envelope in Sally’s grip.

Moran
Open it here, Sally. The first page tells you why they moved your file.
Devlan shifts outside the driver’s door, tense but controlled. Elias leans in from the other side, eyes fixed on Moran like she might vanish into the rain.

Elias
Or it tells us who to be careful of. We do this our way.

Devlan Mitchel
Sally, if there is a warning in there, I want you to see it before anyone else gets a chance to spin it.

Sally
The envelope is sealed with a federal stamp, and the paper inside feels rigid, almost like a thin folder.
Moran slips a thumb under the flap and pauses, not forcing it, just holding the choice open. For a beat, the rain and the streetlamp flicker are the only things moving.
“I open the sealed federal envelope”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Sally peels the flap open and the seal gives with a dry crack. The heavy packet inside slides free in her hands, its first page already folded around a torn edge.
A black-and-white photo stares up at her, clipped beside a typewritten form stamped RECEIVED AFTER INCIDENT. A name line has been scratched through hard enough to leave paper fuzz.

Sally
The file is damaged, but not blank. There is still something here.
The envelope’s weight shifts as more pages slide against her palm, and a thin metal token drops into the seat with a sharp little click.

Moran
That token was in your intake box. If you keep reading, you need to know they wanted it gone.

Elias
Show us the first page, Sally. Right now.
Rain taps harder on the roof, and Devlan’s hand tightens on the door frame as he watches Sally and the folder, waiting for her next move.
“I read the first page”
SUCCESS (Good Investigation, rolled +0)

Sally lowers her gaze and reads. The first page is a transfer summary, clipped and clinical, and the scratched name line is followed by a subject number that matches the torn folder pages. Her intake status is not birth, not rescue, but relocation after an incident.

Sally
This is a record. Not a rumor.
A second line catches her eye. The facility was not the starting point, it was a holding site, and the note beside it says the original authority had already ordered the file moved.

Moran
They buried the trail twice. That page is why I came in person.
Elias leans in farther, then freezes as he spots the scratched-out name and the matching token on the seat. Devlan’s brows lift at the same detail, his concern turning sharp and specific.

Devlan Mitchel
That token is a key tag. Someone wanted you identified and then erased.
Sally reaches the bottom of the page. One typed line stands alone beneath the stamp, naming a transfer destination and a contact office in Portland, with a hand-marked warning beside it: do not trust the sender of the friend note.
“I ask Moran who sent the note”
SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Sally
Who sent the note? Tell me straight.

Moran
Not the office that stamped it. A courier passed it to me in a courthouse lobby, no name, just this warning and a route through Portland. The sender claimed to be your friend.

Moran
I did not trust the messenger. I trusted the handwriting enough to bring it anyway.

Elias
A friend note from inside a sealed federal chain. That is exactly what worries me.

Devlan Mitchel
If the sender knew enough to warn her, they know her file and they know who might be watching.

Moran
I can give you the office name, the time, and the route. I cannot give you the person, because I never saw them.

Moran
But I can say this, they wrote like someone trying to help you without being seen.
“I ask Elias if he trusts the warning”
SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Rain hisses over the sedan while Sally keeps the file open. Elias leans in through the opposite window, reading the warning line again instead of the rest of the page.

Sally
Do you trust it, Elias?

Elias
He studies the torn edge, then the metal token, then Sally. The answer takes him a beat.

Elias
I trust the warning more than the note. Whoever sent it knew the chain was compromised.

Elias
That does not mean I trust the sender. It means I trust the risk.

Moran
That is closer to my view than I expected.
Devlan watches Elias, then the open pages in Sally’s lap, and his shoulders ease a fraction as the car idles under the lamp.

Elias
If you want my honest read, someone inside that system tried to keep her alive. That is worth hearing out.
“this is a lot to take in Devlan, can we please go to this safe house you've been talking about? i need to sleep than ill ask you some questions in the morning.”
