The same low hum rolls up through Amilia Jacobs’s floorboards, and the wine glasses on the table rattle in a steady, machine-perfect rhythm. Amilia pauses at the bedside, confused. Sally knows that pulse. It matches the relay Mark V warned her about.

The glow spreads faintly through the boards under the rug, thin lines of light tracing the apartment like circuitry. Amilia’s calm room suddenly looks wired, not safe.

They go through the motions of bedtime anyway, quiet and careful. Amilia shuts off the lamp. Sally heads to the bed with the badge and camera nearby, but the hum keeps ticking under the silence.

Then the truth lands hard. This apartment is not just watched, it is part of the grid. A relay pulse under the curb is reaching in, testing something inside Sally like a hidden switch.

The room settles into darkness again, except for that faint seam of light under the boards. Somewhere below the building, the pulse continues, patient as a heartbeat.

Sally plants her palm on the boards. The hum jumps into her skin, and she follows it down through the wood, past the joists, to a hard point of light hidden below the floor.

A thin pulse answers her touch, then fractures. Blue-white energy threads from Sally's hand, crawling along the glowing seam like a circuit shorting out.

The relay note under the floor flares once, bright and sharp, then gutters into darkness. The steady ticking in the room cuts dead.

The wine glasses go still. The floorboards lose their shine, leaving only the dark grain of the wood and Sally's hand pressed flat over the now-silent spot.
