The service corridor shudders under distant boots and the thin whine of scanners above. Sally and Devlan are wedged between a blank steel hatch and a junction of sweating pipes, with the stolen drive burning in Sally’s hand like a live wire. Behind them, the harvest team’s search pattern drifts closer. Ahead, the corridor forks, one route to records access, one to service stairs and a narrow escape.

Devlan Mitchel
We do this now, Sally. Take the data public, or kill it. Either way, we move.
Devlan keeps his pistol low, eyes flicking to the ceiling and back to her face. From the far end of the hall, a gray-coated voice barks orders, then fades under the clank of a sealing shutter somewhere deeper in the facility.

Mrs. Vale
Sally, listen to me. If you leave with that drive, they will hunt you forever. Hand it over, and I can still contain this.
Mrs. Vale stands in the broken doorway behind the harvest team, half-lit by red alarm glow, one hand braced against the warped frame. Her authority looks thin now, pressed flat by louder, harsher machinery.

Gray-Coat Leader
Target is mobile. Seal the corridor. We want the subject, not the bystanders.
The leader’s men fan out at the fork, instruments up, boots splashing through a cold strip of standing water. The scanner beam catches the edge of Sally’s badge, then swings toward her chest as the corridor tightens around them.

Sally
The drive is hot in her palm. One choice gets the truth out. The other gets Sally out.
“I take the service stairs with Devlan”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Sally veers for the service stairs, and Devlan falls in beside her. Their boots slap through the standing water as the scanner beam misses by inches and skates into the wall conduit behind them.
The Gray-Coat Leader snaps a hand signal, but the fork has already split the room. His people bunch at the wrong angle, crowding the records route while Sally and Devlan cut clean toward the stairs.
Mrs. Vale strains forward from the broken doorway, then stops short as the harvest team blocks her line. Her glare follows Sally all the way to the stairwell hatch.

Devlan Mitchel
Move, Sally. I’ve got the rear.
Sally hits the stair door with her shoulder and it gives, swinging inward with a metallic groan. Cold air spills up from below, carrying dust, concrete, and the faint echo of open space.
Devlan slips through after her, pistol still low, and the pair drop onto the first landing. Behind them, the corridor seals again with a hard clang, cutting off the harvest team’s shouted orders.
For a heartbeat, the red glow from the records wing only stains the stairwell wall. Then Sally and Devlan descend into the darker service levels, the stolen drive secure as the pursuit fades above.

Devlan Mitchel
You made it out. Whatever you chose, you did not let them own it.

Sally
Then let them chase ghosts. The truth or the fire, it is out of their hands now.
Below them, the stairwell swallowed the last of the alarm light. The corridor door held, and the shouts from above thinned into distance.
Sally vanished into the lower service levels with the weight of the drive and the choice behind her. The facility kept its secrets for one more night, but not all of them belonged to it anymore. When the door sealed, so did that chapter of the hunt.
