As Rosmira reaches for the door, three firm knocks sound through the fading storm. Helga’s voice follows, accompanied by Jews and Rathem along the marked rescue route.

Helga
Rosmira, it’s us. The blizzard is easing, but the mountain path needs more time before anyone travels it.
Helga enters in her oil-marked mechanic’s uniform, snow crusting her boots. Jews brushes flakes from her coat, while Rathem carries his board and studies the white slopes.

Jews
We followed the radio route and your trail markers. Everyone is waiting at the upper run, darling, and nobody is leaving until Helga approves it.

Rathem
For once, caution is the fashionable choice. I would rather arrive at the resort upright than become an amusing rescue story.
LingLing pulls on her thick coat, gloves, and red cap, then looks around the warm shack. She locks the door behind her, choosing to leave solitude without abandoning the place.

LingLing
I am ready. When the path is safe, I will go with you all. Rosmira, do you want to walk beside me or lead the way?

Rosmira
Hey, Jews, I guess being undead has its perks after all. Do you know this guy who came with you? I don't remember seeing him at the resort.
Jews glances toward Rathem, who is studying the storm through the shack window. Her expression shifts from amusement to wary recognition as the group gathers by the door.

Jews
I know him. That is Rathem, Darath’s cousin. He has been orbiting my life for centuries, usually with a joke, a board, or some badly timed flirtation.

Rathem
In my defense, the flirting is rarely badly timed. Also, I am excellent company during blizzards and significantly less terrifying than Darath.
Rathem turns from the window, red eyes bright against his pale face. He offers Rosmira a playful half-bow, keeping his snowboard tucked neatly under one arm.

Jews
He is an ancient vampire by blood, young by our standards, and hopelessly fond of pretending nothing matters. He came because the rescue needed someone who knows these slopes.

Rathem
Jews remembered me. That is more dangerous to my composure than any mountain.
