The Library Reclaims Its Own

The bloodstained boards split with a wet crack. From the crawlspace, a pale hand rises, too long and jointed wrong, fingers clawing for the fallen satchel beside the unconscious partner.

Jeannette Fortune looms over the body as the shadows tighten along the baseboards. The Library seems to inhale through the floor.

Give that back.

The hand jerks the satchel halfway under the broken boards, dragging with it a smear of black dust and old paper mold. A shape gathers beneath the floor, leaning toward the gap like a face pressed against thin glass.

The floor is opening under her.

The unconscious partner twitches once as the satchel straps scrape free. The Library's hand flexes, waiting, hostile and patient, while the back door hangs open to the dark.

The Library Reclaims Its Own

Jeannette drives the limp body forward with one heavy shove, and the partner slides across the broken boards toward the gap. The Library’s fingers snap wider to catch them.

The unconscious partner drops face-first into the opening, shoulders wrenching down into the crawlspace as the satchel strap tears free.

Black dust puffs up around the hole. A wet, delighted rustle moves beneath the floor, and the Library drags the body lower with a possessive pull.

One shoe kicks once against the splintered edge, then vanishes. The shadows under the boards thicken like spilled ink.

The satchel hangs half-open in the Library’s grip, its papers fanning toward the gap as if they are being counted.

Mine.

From below, the dark shifts away from the doorway, and the open night beyond the back door feels suddenly farther off than the crawlspace.
