The clerk counts the payout twice, then stops when the bell over the door gives a soft, nervous jingle. Outside the insurance office window, smoke still crawls along the street like a stain that will not wash out.

The Clerk
Too much money for a burned library. Too much trouble tied to it.
Jeannette Fortune has the cash in hand. The singed claim papers lie stamped approved on the counter, and the old address on the paper seems to darken the room all by itself.

The Clerk
Take it, and go quiet. If anyone asks, I never saw you.
From somewhere beyond the glass, a second shape pauses in the smoke, as if reading the office through the window. Not a corpse, not a memory, something waiting for the trail the papers leave behind.

Jeannette Fortune
The address is still there.
The clerk flinches at Jeannette's silence and pushes back from the counter. The payout rests between them, and the door behind Jeannette is open to the street, to the smoke, to whatever comes next.

Spend a quiet evening undisturbed
“Jeannette leaves town and doesn't look back. What an insane night.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -2)

The Clerk
Your papers are in order, Miss Fortune. If you would just sign here, we can be done.

Jeannette Fortune
Then we are done.
The clerk slid the payout across the desk with shaking hands and looked past her window, toward the smoke thickening outside.

Jeannette Fortune
I have spent enough of my life running from my own name.
By the time she stepped into the street, the watcher was only a shape in the haze, but the air had already gone cold.
Jeannette Fortune left with the insurance money and the bitter knowledge that survival was not the same as escape. The library's loss was settled, but its shadow remained, and so did hers. Behind her, the clerk closed the door with visible relief, while the smoke swallowed the street and everything that had tried to follow her.
