Jeannette Fortune descends into the records office, boots whispering on damp steps. Below, Mr. Ashdown sits at a central desk, stamping ledgers with ritual patience. Each mark leaks black ink onto the floor like fresh blood.

Mr. Ashdown
You are late, Miss Fortune. The account is already open.
He never turns. The shelves around him sag with dust and old moisture, and the room smells of rot, paper, and river water. The stamped pages twitch as if they are listening.

Jeannette Fortune
The ledgers are marked with the library seal.

Mr. Ashdown
Your house has become talkative. Your Watchman reported back only in pieces.
At the word house, the floorboards behind Jeannette answer with a low, eager creak. Something beneath them presses upward, hungry and patient, as if it has recognized Ashdown too.

Mr. Ashdown
I keep records of all hungers. Come closer, and let us finish your accounting.
“"Not interested." Jeannette goes for the heart with her knife.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee, rolled -1)

Jeannette Fortune
Not interested.
Jeannette slides down from the stair and drives the knife in under Ashdown's ribs, straight for the heart. His stamping hand jerks once, then goes slack, and the ledger tilts in a dark spray of ink.

Mr. Ashdown
No. That account was never yours to close.
He finally turns, pale eyes fixed on her with sudden, appraising fury. The floorboards beneath the desk heave, hungry enough to split, while the ledgers slap open and pages begin to blacken at the edges.

Mr. Ashdown
You think I serve the house? I am the one it answers to.
Blood and ink run together over the desk legs. One stamped page tears free and skids toward the stairs, its seal half-bled out, as if the room itself is trying to keep the record from leaving.
Ashdown sways in his chair, one hand pressed hard over the wound, the other reaching toward the ledgers. The lamp gutters lower, and the shadows in the room deepen around the shelves, waiting for Jeannette's next move.
“Jeannette drives the knife in harder.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee, rolled +2)

Jeannette drives the blade deeper, and Ashdown jolts so hard the chair legs scrape. The stamped page in his hand slips free and flutters into the black spill at his feet.

Mr. Ashdown
You do not get to erase this ledger.
He tries to drag breath through the wound, but the word comes out wet. The floorboards swell once under the desk, then crack, as if something below is tasting the iron in him.

Mr. Ashdown
My employer will know you were here.
The lantern dips lower, throwing Ashdown's face into hollows. The blackened pages in the stack curl inward, and the torn record by the stairs skates another inch toward the drop.
Ashdown's hand falls away from the wound. His fingers twitch once over the ledger, then go slack, leaving the desk smeared with blood, ink, and a seal that no longer sits straight.
