A little later, the clerk is gone, and Jeannette stands alone behind the counter. The new catalog lies open beneath the ordinary hush of the clean library.

The bell rings. An unfamiliar adult man steps inside, lean and pale beneath a damp brown coat, with dark hair plastered to his forehead and a frayed red scarf at his throat.

Good afternoon. I am looking for a book called The Ashen Index. Do you have it?

His gaze lingers uneasily on Jeannette, then slips across the shelves. He carries no visible weapon, only a narrow wallet and rain-dark gloves clutched in one hand.

Beneath his shoes, the clean floor gives a faint, hungry creak. The sound travels through the shelves and settles under the counter like a patient breath.

It may be an older title. The address led me here, and I was told this library keeps unusual volumes.

The customer waits for her answer, unaware that Jeannette is studying the shape and weight of him as prey. Behind the walls, something listens.

Jeannette leaves the counter and crosses between the clean shelves, her tall shadow sliding over the polished floor. The customer follows, clutching his gloves.

I appreciate it. The Ashen Index is supposed to contain references to older collections, perhaps records that were never catalogued.

A narrow door behind the shelves opens into Jeannette's private quarters. The air is warmer there, carrying dust, old paper, and the faint mineral scent of the foundation.

The lock is newer than the door.

You keep your rarer books here? It feels rather separate from the public rooms.

Jeannette leads him fully inside. Behind them, the door settles shut with a soft click, and the new library resumes its clean, patient hush.

“Jeannette locks the door, then pins the customer against the wall. "Oh, it's separate for a reason, morsel."”

Oh, it’s separate for a reason, morsel.

Jeannette turns the newer lock. The bolt slides home with a heavy click, sealing the private quarters from the clean public library.

Before the customer can retreat, Jeannette crosses the small room in one long, silent stride and drives him back against the wall. Her hand closes firmly at his collar.

Wait. I only came for the book.

His gloves fall to the floor. Damp hair clings to his pale forehead as the wall gives a faint creak beneath his shoulders, listening through the plaster.

You misunderstand me. I was told the Index was here, not that its keeper would attack me.

The room contracts around the struggle, warm with dust and old paper. Beyond the locked door, the shelves remain perfectly still, while the customer’s pulse beats beneath Jeannette’s grip.

“"Oh, I understand you just fine. You want the book. Unfortunately for you, I want your delicious meat." Jeannette begins her feast.”

Jeannette’s grip tightens at his collar. She wrenches him sideways from the wall and drives him down onto the rug, her boots striking the floor with measured clicks.

No. Wait. You cannot mean that. I came here in good faith.

His protest becomes a muffled gasp as Jeannette bends over him. The private room fills with the sounds of struggling cloth, scraping wood, and the first wet tear of flesh.

The door is locked. No one in the public rooms can hear me.

Jeannette begins her feast beneath the listening walls. Warm blood darkens the rug, and the customer’s resistance dwindles into spasms before falling still.

Outside the quarters, the new library remains immaculate. Inside, the customer’s gloves lie abandoned beside the door, while something deep in the foundation gives a quiet, satisfied creak.

“Jeannette eats her fill, and puts the remains away in her freezer, for later.”

Jeannette eats until hunger loosens its grip, leaving the private room quiet except for the wet, methodical sounds beneath the listening walls.

When she is finished, she wraps the remaining pieces in oilcloth and carries them through the narrow quarters to an old chest freezer beneath the stairs.

The freezer opens with a protesting groan. Inside, clean packages wait in orderly rows, and the customer’s remains join them beneath a strip of dated paper.

A sharp crack splits the room as the lid drops. The noise travels through the floorboards and into the public library, loud enough to stir dust from the shelves.

Jeannette locks the freezer and wipes the handle, but a shallow cut opens across her palm where a broken clasp catches her skin. Blood beads against the metal.

Beyond the locked quarters, one shelf gives a single settling creak. The new library has heard the disturbance, and its clean silence no longer feels entirely empty.
