The Fortune Library exhales around Jeannette Fortune. A few books slip free of their shelves and thud onto the carpet, pages riffling in the still air. The metallic scent of blood lingers, but it no longer feels fresh.

Jeannette steadies herself in the back room. The cleaned floorboards shine darkly under the weak light, and the freezer hums with its terrible burden. The room answers her with a creak, not a cry.

The Library

Safe. Settled. Hungry.

More shadows gather in the corners, then loosen, sliding low along the walls like tired ink. A fallen book lies open near her boot, its pages bent as if they have been read too often.

The shelves are restless.

One of the books settles itself with a soft, final tap. The room grows quieter for it, as though listening for Jeannette Fortune to decide whether she wants company or silence.

Jeannette Fortune

I can't say I was expecting my library to be alive.

The room pauses on her words. Then the shelves answer with a slow, wood-dry sigh, and the fallen book on the carpet turns itself face-down as if listening.

The Library

Alive is only a word. I have been awake.

A seam of shadow slips between two stacks and gathers under Jeannette Fortune's feet, not touching, only crowding close like a hand at the throat.

You cleaned my blood from the boards. You sealed the door. You made this place quieter than your hunger.

The shelves are speaking through the dark.

From the back door, the old scraping sound is gone. In its place, the lock gives one soft, deliberate click from the far side, as if something outside has leaned away and gone still.

You wanted a sanctuary. You built a mouth. Now decide if you live inside it.
