The paper-thin silhouettes in the hallway finish speaking in the Journalist’s and Watchman’s voices, and the last syllable hangs in the smoke like a nailed scrap of paper.

The burned ink stain on the floorboards pulses under the char, then splits into lines like handwriting sinking into wood. Names surface there, half-legible, half-swallowed.

The Library

The Library

It is mine. Their names. Their notes. Their little proofs.

Shelves groan. Drawer fronts twitch open and shut. Somewhere in the walls, pages rustle like trapped insects learning a new shape.

The Library

The Library

He sent copies. One to a press box, one to a friend, one hidden where the dead cannot reach it. I tasted the ink before you burned it.

Jeannette Fortune

The copies were real.

The silhouettes bend, then wear other mouths for a moment, the Journalist’s certainty and the Watchman’s warning stitched into the hall itself. The library does not only remember them, it is replacing itself with what they knew.

The Library Absorbs the Dead

Jeannette bolts through the smoke-choked hall, boots striking sparks off the split boards. Behind her, the handwriting in the floor twists fast, reaching after her heel like wet fingers.

The Library shudders through the walls. A seam of shelving swings inward, and a gust of cold air drags a hidden packet loose from the dark, flinging it to the floor at Jeannette’s feet.

It’s a copy. Folded twice, and sealed in ash.

The paper opens on its own in the draft. Names, dates, and a neat ledger hand glare up through the soot, one line underlined hard enough to tear the page.

The Library

The Library

That one was buried where the dead could not whisper over it. Ashdown hid it from me.

The ceiling groans, and a black tongue of smoke rolls past the staircase. The page trembles, still legible, still reachable, as more of the hall begins to blur into heat.

Jeannette leaves the building and watches it burn.

The Library Absorbs the Dead

Jeannette yanks the page close, then keeps moving. The hall behind her coughs black smoke, and the split boards spit sparks as she reaches the back door.

She shoulders it open and slips through just as the frame groans inward. Heat slaps her back, and the library answers with a wet, hungry crackle.

Outside, the night air hits cold and clean. From the threshold, she turns to face her own windows as orange light blooms behind the warped shelves.

The paper in her hand blackens at the edges, but one line survives long enough to read. A second address surfaces through the ash, written in the same neat hand.

The Library

The Library

It is not all here. One copy escaped me.

Jeannette Fortune

Jeannette Fortune

The address is real.

Inside, the burning hall breathes louder, and the shelving bends as if bowing toward the fire. Smoke pours through the crack under the door while Jeannette stands alone in the yard, the door still open behind her.
