Jeannette hauls the last weight through the back room and into the freezer, each bootstep slow on the blood-slick boards. The Watchman and the stranger vanish into the cold with a dull, final thud.
She returns with a brush and a bucket, kneeling over the worst of the stain. Oil, blood, and water smear together under her hands, turning the floor dark and glossy.
The library settles around her, shelves ticking softly in the dark. The open back door breathes in the night air, but nothing enters.

Jeannette Fortune
The freezer door holds cold well.
Jeannette scrubs harder at a stubborn seam in the boards, then pauses to wipe the brush on a rag. Her red sweater catches the lantern-less gloom like a fresh bruise.
When she straightens, the floor is cleaner, though not quite innocent. A faint metallic scent lingers near the threshold, buried under old paper and dust.
For a moment, the room is almost comfortable, quiet enough to hear her own breathing and the house settling around her.

“Jeannette closes and locks the back door back up, then starts cleaning up the rest.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Jeannette rises from the floor and crosses to the back door. Her hand closes on the latch, then the bolt. The wood shuts out the night with a dull, final click.

Jeannette Fortune
The threshold is sealed.
She turns back to the boards and works faster now, brush, rag, bucket. The last stain thins into a brown haze under her hands, then gives way to bare wood.
A faint scrape answers from somewhere beyond the door, soft enough to be mistaken for settling timber.
Jeannette wipes once more along the seam, chasing the metallic sheen out of the grain. The floor loses its shine and becomes only old wood again, though the air still tastes wrong.
Silence returns, heavy and watchful, pressing against the locked door as if something outside is listening for the next sound.
