The Library's Hungry Floor

Jeannette hauls the frozen remains from the back room freezer and lowers them to the torn floorboards. The wood opens in hungry, careful seams, taking the bodies piece by piece until only a dull, satisfied pulse remains.

The Library answers with a low hum under her boots. Shadows tuck themselves into narrow lines, neat as stitches, and the room grows still enough to hear the old building breathing.

Jeannette kneels and scrubs at the last stubborn bloodstain. Red thins to pink, then to raw pale grain, as if the floor is remembering how to look innocent.

The stain was never for hiding.

When the wood finally clears, the whole back room seems to tighten. The floorboards settle, polished and obedient, their hunger replaced by a listening quiet.

Then the knock comes, sharp and insistent at the back door. Not desperate. Measured. Curious.

The Watchman

The Watchman

I know this house has been fed. Open up.

The sound hangs in the room like a hook. The cleaned boards beneath Jeannette point their silent attention toward the door, as if the library itself has been waiting for this exact visitor.

Kill the watchman

Jeannette groans. "Seriously, how many more people are going to show up tonight? And why do they know so much?" She then opens the door, grabs the watchman, and tosses him to the floorboards.

Seriously, how many more people are going to show up tonight? And why do they know so much?

Jeannette rips the back door open. Cold air knifes in, and the Watchman is there at arm's reach, lantern lifting too late.

She catches him by the front of his coat and wrenches him over the threshold. The floorboards under her boots flex, eager and awake.

The Watchman slams down hard on the boards. His lantern skitters away, swings once, and goes out with a wet hiss.

The library's shadows deepen around his sprawled body, leaning in as if to read him. The door hangs open to the dark for one exposed, shuddering second.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Wait, I can tell you who sent me.

His voice catches in the room's quiet. Beneath him, the floor gives a soft, hungry creak and settles.

Jeannette closes and locks the door yet again, then pins him under her boot. "Speak."

The Library's Hungry Floor

Jeannette drives the door shut with one brutal shove. The latch bites, the lock turns, and the night is cut off at the seam.

She follows through without hesitation, planting her boot on the Watchman's chest and pinning him flat against the hungry boards.

Jeannette Fortune

Jeannette Fortune

Speak.

The Watchman

The Watchman

You are making the house listen to you. That is not the same as winning.

The floor answers with a low, satisfied groan beneath his ribs. The fallen lantern lies dark at the edge of the threshold, still as a dead eye.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Take your foot off me, and I will tell you who sent me.

The lock holds. The Watchman does not. His hand scrabbles once against her boot, and the shifting boards tighten under him like a mouth that has not yet decided to close.

"I don't think so. I'm the one in control here. Speak or die."

I don't think so. I'm the one in control here. Speak or die.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Sent by the one that keeps records in the dark. It wanted the house fed, and your name measured against it.

The words come ragged, but they come. His composure breaks, and the floor gives a hungry shiver under his spine as if it approves of the confession.

The Watchman

The Watchman

I was told to bring proof back. I was told you would make a mistake before the door could be opened again.

Jeannette keeps him pinned. The cost lands in the room instead, the extinguished lantern finally rolling on its rim and striking the baseboard with a dry clack that sounds too loud in the hush.

The Library

The Library

A keeper of names sent a watcher. How ordinary. How rude.

The floorboards tighten, not to kill him yet, but to hold him open like a page. The shadows deepen around Jeannette's boots, waiting for what she does with the answer.

"And who is this person? Where can I find them?"

Jeannette Fortune

Who is this person, and where do I find them?

The Watchman

The Watchman

You find him below the river road, in the old records office. He keeps the dark shelves, the ledger room. He calls himself Mr. Ashdown.

The Watchman

The Watchman

He sent me because he wanted your house measured, your secret counted. That is all I was told.

The floorboards grip harder, then still. The name hangs in the stale air like soot.

The Library

The Library

Mr. Ashdown. A keeper of names. Of course.

The lantern lies dead against the baseboard, and the shadows around the door press inward as if listening for the next footstep.

✓ Quest Accepted

Kill Mr. Ashdown

Jeannette got the info she needed. She lets her library have the watchman. "He's all yours."

He's all yours.

Jeannette lifts her boot, and the floorboards answer at once, cinching around the Watchman as the shadows at the door deepen.

The lantern stays on its side, guttering in the dark while the library settles, satisfied and waiting.

Jeannette watches him be claimed. One less annoying pest.

The Library's Hungry Floor

Jeannette lingers by the doorway, watching the floor swallow the last of his struggle. The lantern’s weak glow wobbles over the boards, and the library settles around her like a held breath.
