The listening room settles around the dead watchers. Jeannette stands among torn red strings, holding the wax-sealed satchel in one hand and the roster in the other.
The concealed drawer hangs open beneath the phonograph. Inside, the brass archive seal rests beside a complete list of surveillance addresses, each line marked with the closed-eye symbol.

The satchel, seal, and roster are three parts of the same connection.
The satchel’s leather is cold and faintly damp. Beneath its wax seal, something shifts once, as if a folded document has turned itself toward her.
The brass seal bears a shallow impression of the Fortune Library’s original address. Its metal darkens whenever Jeannette’s bloodied hand approaches, then brightens when she withdraws.
The roster’s final page names the vacant property, the municipal archives, and one further destination. The last entry is unfinished, leaving the connection intact but exposed.
Beyond the archive walls, night presses against the cracked windows. Jeannette has the evidence, the occult instruments, and an unbroken route back toward the hunting ground she intends to keep.

Jeannette Fortune leaves Municipal Archives Listening Room behind and arrives at her library.
“Jeannette discards the key, roster, satchel, seal, and list, and burns it all, before heading back to her library.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Fortune Library receives Jeannette in its familiar hush. Dust lies undisturbed across the front desk, and the shelves lean subtly inward, recognizing their keeper’s return.
In the back room, she drops the brass key, roster, wax-sealed satchel, archive seal, and surveillance list into the fireplace. The fire catches with a low, hungry sigh.
Leather curls, wax liquefies, and the closed-eye symbols blacken together. The papers flare blue for an instant, then collapse into ordinary ash without a voice or surviving mark.

The connection is gone.
A draft passes through the library, carrying the last smoke up the chimney. Every shelf settles at once, and the oppressive pressure beyond the walls releases into quiet.
Among the surviving books, a vacant space appears at eye level. A plain catalog card slides into it by itself, bearing only one entry: Fortune Library, open.
Night deepens beyond the windows. The library keeps its doors, its secrets, and its empty aisles, while Jeannette stands alone in the hunting ground that remains hers.

The last blackened scrap folded into the fire. Beyond the windows, the library settled into its familiar, harmless quiet.

Jeannette Fortune
Open, then.
She placed the catalog card among the others, straightened the empty shelf, and let the ordinary room belong to her again.
By morning, the Fortune Library stood unchanged: public, orderly, and quietly hers. The brass seal, the roster, the satchel, and every watching mark had become ash, and with them went the pressure beyond the walls. Only the card remained, declaring what Jeannette already knew: Fortune Library, open.
