Jeannette Fortune stands in the hallway as the black ink stain pulses underfoot, like a second heart buried in the boards. The shadows around it thicken, then stretch, slick and hungry, dragging at the last sour trace of the intruder.
A wet crackle moves through the floor. The Library leans into the stain, drinking from it, and the dark in the corners swells fuller, longer, alive with a new appetite.

The Library
It left marks. It left pieces. I keep what enters me.
Under the pulse of the ink, old seams in the boards tighten shut. The hallway feels less hollow, as if the house has found a stronger spine after feeding.

Jeannette Fortune
The copies were real. The building keeps more than blood.
Far off, somewhere beyond the walls, a paper scrap skitters on its own, then stills. The silence that follows feels answered, not by a witness, but by something that has already eaten the proof.
“Jeannette has had it. This has gone far beyond what she's willing to deal with. It is time to burn down the building and start anew.”

Jeannette drags a lit match through the hallway and drops it onto the ink stain. The boards catch at once, a thin ribbon of flame racing along the seams the Library just sealed.
Heat blooms up the walls, licking the molding and swallowing the shadowy edges. The smell is sharp, old paper and varnish, and it turns the air bitter.

The Library
You feed me. Now you burn me.
Jeannette backs away as the floor gives a wet creak under the fire. One blackened plank splits, and the sealed boards beneath it flex like something waking up.

The Library
Names. Ashdown. The stain. Mine.
The flames surge into the hall, but they do not run clean. They gutter around the corners as if tasting the room, and the Library answers with a low, starving shudder.
By the time the smoke thickens, Jeannette is already moving, boots striking sparks on the boards. Behind her, the fire hisses against something deep in the walls, and the house must decide whether to submit or bite.
“Jeannette books it out of the building.”
