Jeannette leaves the Fortune Library with the singed page folded in her hand. Behind her, the front door remains open, the ash line halted at the counter, and the canvas tote waits beside the private room.

She crosses town beneath a pale, windless sky. The second address leads to a narrow vacant property concealed behind a rusted chained gate, its windows filmed with grime.

The gate hangs partly open despite the chain looped through it. Beyond, weeds crowd a cracked path toward the dark building, where fresh gray ash stains the threshold.

Dust lies thick across the entry floor, except for a disturbed trail leading inward. Something has crossed recently, leaving narrow smears and one deep impression near the wall.

The singed page grows warm between Jeannette’s fingers. Beneath the burned address, the ink shifts slightly, as though another line is struggling to emerge.

Behind the chained gate, the empty property gives a soft settling groan. No voice follows, but from somewhere inside comes the faint scrape of paper dragged across wood.

Jeannette steps through the vacant property’s doorway. The disturbed ash gives way beneath her boots, and the stale interior closes around her with a damp, papery silence.

Inside, the entry hall extends toward a broad staircase and several sealed rooms. Dust veils the walls, but the narrow trail continues clearly across the floor.

The singed page warms against Jeannette’s palm. Its lower ink finally settles into legible words: continuation below, records retained.

A scrape travels through the house from somewhere beneath the floorboards. Paper drags slowly across wood, then stops beneath the staircase.

Behind Jeannette, the chained gate gives a faint metallic rattle in the windless yard. Ahead, a basement door stands open, its threshold marked by fresh gray ash.

The vacant property accepts her presence without protest. From below comes one quiet turn of a page, followed by the smell of smoke trapped in old paper.

Jeannette crosses to the open basement door and begins down the narrow stairs. Ash compresses beneath her boots, releasing a dry scent of smoke and wet paper.

The stairwell descends farther than the property’s modest exterior suggests. Bare walls lean inward, and old nail heads glisten beneath a film of moisture.

Halfway down, the singed page pulses once in her hand. The words continuation below darken, then remain fixed as the last daylight disappears above.

Jeannette reaches the basement floor. Shelves line the low chamber, packed with warped ledgers, sealed boxes, and bundles of papers tied in blackened cord.

A single oil lamp burns on a central desk without consuming its fuel. Its pale flame illuminates a register opened to a page bearing the address upstairs.

The register’s ink crawls slowly across the paper, recording her arrival beneath older entries. Around the desk, dust lies undisturbed except for a fresh path toward the records.

Behind her, the basement door remains open, framing the empty stairwell. Below the lamp, a second document waits atop the register, its seal still unbroken.
