Jeannette's Story - An Insane, Nonsensical Night of Horrors

The heat peels the Fortune Library open. Under the buckling boards, the floor is not wood at all, but a ribcage, huge and calcified, packed with old silence and older hunger.

The burning structure shifts again, and the answer comes with it, Mr. Ashdown’s employer was the thing beneath the books, the one that paid in ledgers, names, and bodies. Retribution is not a threat. It is this, the house collapsing around its own bones.

Jeannette stands in the embers with the singed address in her hand. Everything around her turns black, curls, and falls away, except that scrap of paper.

The Library groans from somewhere inside the fire, no longer possessive, only dying. Smoke pours into the yard as the last hidden chambers cave in.

Jeannette leaves the ruins behind and heads for the insurance office, carrying the address and the smell of smoke. By evening, she is already planning a new place to own, with fewer secrets in the walls.

At the counter, the clerk looks up as she arrives, blinking at ash on her sleeves and the cold little smile she gives nothing away.

Jeannette slides the singed page across the counter. The clerk reads it, then looks past her shoulder, toward the smoke darkening the street.

The clerk stamps the papers with a hard, final thump. A drawer opens. Coins and notes come out with the receipt.

Jeannette takes the money, and the clerk does not stop her. Outside, the smoke keeps crawling low over the road, as if the ruin is still hungry.
