The floorboards below the records office heave harder, and then split wide. Mr. Ashdown, the ledgers, the black ink, even the blood on the desk, all sink into the jagged mouth as if the library is swallowing its own disgrace.
Jeannette Fortune turns from the ruin and walks out, her boots leaving the last clean shape in the dark. Behind her, the crackling boards knit shut with a wet, satisfied shudder.
From above, the main hall gives a low, protective creak. The lantern light gutters once, twice, and dies to a thin red ember.
Then the ember bursts. The broken lantern’s fall has not merely shattered glass, it has broken a ward. Cold air pours through the library like a held breath finally released.
Something unseen slips in with it, not through the door, but through the dark the light can no longer hold back. The shelves answer with a long, uneasy sigh.

Jeannette Fortune
The lantern was a lock.
Jeannette reaches her bedroom threshold as the building settles behind her, heavy and watchful, while the newly admitted silence waits just out of sight.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Willpower, rolled +1)

Jeannette Fortune
Whoever and whatever you are, I've killed every other annoyance tonight, and you'll join them if you don't leave me the hell be.
The words sink into the dark hall and come back thin, but the house listens. The shifting boards underfoot go still, and the cold in the air recoils a little, as if it has taken the warning personally.

The Library
Jeannette Fortune speaks with a butcher's calm. The house knows that voice now.
A red ember glows deeper in the wall, then dims. Somewhere behind the shelves, the pressure of the unseen thing loosens, and a long stain of black ink shines wetly in the dark wood.

The Library
Names stay. Meals stay. Secrets stay. The rest may go.

Jeannette Fortune
The floorboards are still breathing.
Jeannette gets her wish, the intrusion pulls back without showing itself, and the hall's chill thins at the edge of hearing. But the bargain costs her the last quiet in the room, and the ink stain remains like a bruise the boards cannot swallow.
