The Old Methods End

The hidden chamber settles into ordinary silence. Veyra’s body remains beside the sealed niche, while Soulcatcher’s pale passage has vanished without leaving a mark.

Mara gathers the inert notes and dark violet thread, keeping them separate from Veyra’s remains. Her wrenched shoulder aches when she lifts the bundle, but the chamber’s wards do not stir.

A controlled passage opens above the bronze boundary, revealing the western quay and gray daylight beyond. No summons answers from the dead room.

Mara steps through alone. The portal closes behind her, leaving the observation chamber, sealed niche, and Veyra’s body in undisturbed darkness.

Far north, Nera, Sarthien, Vaelis Thorn, Corven Voss, Elian Voss, and the elderly elf observer, an elderly elf man with a lean build, dark skin, a lined face, pointed ears, and short curly white hair in a loose cream tunic and tan vest remain at the camp near Ashbridge, keeping watch over the surface roads.

No archive calls, no ledger directs, and no violet relay survives to turn observation into command. The old methods end as scattered inert objects.

Mara stands beneath the quay’s open sky with the evidence in hand. Beyond her, Phandelver’s roads continue into ordinary uncertainty, and the next choice remains hers.

The Old Methods End

The safe house receives Mara with familiar cedar smoke, dust-warm shelves, and rain whispering against the shutters. Her candles remain where she left them, undisturbed.

She places Veyra’s inert notes and dark thread in separate sealed drawers, then sets her journal beside them. Nothing in the room answers or awakens.

Mara

Home is quiet, and the road behind me is finished.

Mara washes quay salt from her hands and changes into loose robes. Her shoulder aches when she lifts the basin, then eases as she settles beside the hearth.

On the table, blank paper waits beneath a clean inkpot. Beyond the shutters, Phandelver carries on with market voices, footsteps, and ordinary evening bells.

No summons arrives from Ashbridge, Talon Tower, the western quay, or any forgotten archive. The silence asks nothing of her.

Mara’s safe house becomes simply hers again: a place for rest, chosen work, and whatever life she builds next, free from every abandoned command.

The Old Methods End

Mara sealed the notes and dark violet thread in separate drawers, then set her journal beside them. The hearth breathed softly into the quiet.

Mara

Mara

No summons. No commands. Just tomorrow, when I choose it.

She washed the quay salt from her skin, changed into loose robes, and let her aching shoulder settle beneath the warmth.

Behind her, Veyra’s body, the sealed niche, and Soulcatcher’s pale passage were left to silence. The old methods had become inert things in separate drawers, stripped of their power. In Phandelver, Mara’s safe house was hers again, and so was the uncertain road beyond it.
