Broad-Built Adult Beast

The chamber remains quiet. The stream crosses beneath the blue-lit thread, while fresh silt preserves the vanished visitors’ route toward the ravine’s upper course.

Above, the southern road lies open and undisturbed. Eren Vale continues toward the ravine, leaving Mara alone below; the dark beast, a large adult quadrupedal beast with coarse black fur, a blunt muzzle, and low-set amber eyes, remains at the spring.

The harmless preservation magic rests in the waterlogged silt, holding impressions of earlier currents. Beneath it, the altered guidance pulses with a newer, more deliberate rhythm.

When the two patterns overlap, the water briefly reveals pale images: travelers once followed the thread beneath the stream, then turned toward the marked ledge.

The guidance was built to direct attention toward a crossing and identify changes along its route. It did not originally command passage or name a destination.

The water preserves what passed through. The altered thread preserves where someone wanted eyes to look.

The clean blank remains untouched, refusing to complete the pattern. The chamber offers Mara time to compare the layers further, examine the ledge, or return to the open road.

“I use the weave to Identify what altered the buried guidance”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

Mara gathers the overlapping impressions into the weave, separating water-memory, foundation magic, and the newer thread until each layer holds its own shape.

The older guidance was a neutral crossing map. The alteration was added afterward by a deliberate hand, using the preservation marks as a channel rather than breaking them.

That hand redirected the thread beneath the stream toward the marked ledge, making changes along the route easier to notice and drawing attention away from the refusal-mark.

The weave identifies the method clearly: silt-bound inscription, layered over the original guidance, with no command, summons, or living will embedded in it.

The recent two-person passage confirms the timing. One traveler examined the refusal, while the other followed the altered thread and reinforced its direction from the ledge.

The alteration was therefore made by a later observer seeking to guide attention toward the crossing, not by the settlement’s bell, the ravine, or any hidden presence.

New Gift: Reads Deeper Foundations

“I jot the alterations down in my journal.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -3)

Mara opens her warded journal beside the dry channel and writes the findings in measured lines: original neutral map, later silt-bound alteration, redirected attention, and the untouched refusal-mark.

The journal’s ward accepts the account without changing it. Ink settles around a careful diagram of the nested arcs, the clean blank, the stream, and the marked ledge.

She records the two recent travelers separately, noting that one examined the refusal while the other reinforced the altered thread, and that both later withdrew toward the ravine.

The alteration guides attention, but it does not command passage.

As Mara finishes the final notation, cold returns to two fingers. The cost is precise: the journal’s ward draws a small reserve of channel energy from her hand.

Her fingers stiffen, but the record is complete and legible. The journal preserves the altered guidance as witnessed structure, without assigning a sender or purpose beyond what the marks prove.

Across the stream, the blue thread continues beneath the water toward the ledge. The refusal remains clean beside it, and the chamber offers the next choice without pressure.
