The southern crossing carries Mara and Eren through the shallow stream. Beyond it, wet stone walls narrow the road beneath leaning trees, while the settlement fades behind them.

Recent runoff has stripped soil from the roadside, exposing three rough steps descending beside the old route. No marker names them, but faint blue light pulses below.

Eren Vale

Eren Vale

Those steps were not visible when I mapped the path. The runoff must have uncovered them.

Eren stops at the streambank, keeping his axe lowered. Water threads around the stones, carrying silt away from the dark stair and its intermittent glow.

Eren Vale

Eren Vale

The old stones guarded roads, not stairs. Something beneath them has changed.

The blue pulses brighten faintly, then recede, revealing damp walls below the first step. No voice rises from the darkness, and no movement disturbs the trees.

Eren Vale

Eren Vale

The ravine lies just beyond this crossing. The southern road remains clear, but I have never seen anything beneath it.

Mara

Mara

Thank you, lad. I’ll take it from here.

Eren studies her plainly spoken dismissal, then nods. He steps back from the exposed stair, leaving the southern road and the blue-lit descent entirely to Mara.

Eren Vale

Eren Vale

Fair enough. I will keep to the road and report what I saw, without claiming to understand it.

He turns southward, crossing the stream and following the old route toward the ravine. His green cloak soon blends with the wet trunks, while his lowered axe remains untouched.

Mara stands alone beside the exposed steps. Blue light pulses beneath the roadside, touching damp stone and runoff with a cold, intermittent glow.

Mara

Mara

The stairs were hidden until the water stripped the road bare.

The stream continues its quiet work around the stones. Above, the southern path remains open toward the ravine; below, the newly revealed stair descends into the old earth without a voice or summons.

“I sence the paths between the stairs or the ravine”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

Mara steadies herself beside the exposed steps and extends her perception through the damp earth, reading the old routes without touching either path.

The southern road carries a simple, living course toward the ravine, following the stream before bending around the old stones. Its warding is worn but undisturbed.

The blue-lit stairs do not lead beneath the ravine directly. They descend beneath the roadside, then turn east through a buried foundation toward the roots and the altered marker.

Mara senses the two routes meeting farther below, where the stair’s old passage crosses a dry channel connected to the ravine. Neither path claims her, summons her, or closes behind her.

The stairs carry the newer disturbance, while the ravine remains the settlement’s recognized boundary. The blue pulse is a signal from the buried crossing, not a warning from the bell.

The relationship settles clearly in Mara’s awareness: the southern road reaches the ravine openly, and the hidden stairs offer a separate, concealed approach that joins it below the old stones.

“I descend the blue-lit stairs”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

The Newly Exposed Steps

Mara descends the blue-lit stairs, placing each boot on damp stone as the intermittent glow steadies beneath her. The stream’s murmur fades overhead.

The stair turns east through a buried foundation. Rootlets thread the ceiling, and old masonry presses close around a narrow passage untouched by the southern road.

Mara

Mara

The stairs meet the dry channel below the old stones.

She reaches the bottom without resistance. A dry channel crosses the passage, its pale bed leading toward the ravine while blue light gathers in shallow seams along the walls.

Beyond the crossing, the altered marker’s direction is visible from below: a shaft of roots and broken stone rises toward the alder opening, separate from the recognized road.

Nothing claims Mara or seals the stair behind her. The concealed approach lies open beneath the old stones, joining the ravine’s lower course exactly as her perception revealed.

“I inspect the blue-lit seams before crossing the channel.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

The Newly Exposed Steps

Mara kneels beside the dry channel and studies the blue-lit seams without touching them. Their pulses reveal layered marks beneath the damp masonry, arranged like a buried map.

The upper seams belong to the old foundation, but the lower lines were added later. They converge beneath the altered marker, then continue toward the ravine’s dry channel.

Mara

Mara

The blue light marks a crossing, not a summons.

When Mara extends her perception through the nearest seam, cold travels into two fingers and leaves them numb. The passage answers with a clear image of the buried junction.

The junction was built to redirect water and travelers beneath the old stones. Later hands changed its guidance, turning the concealed route toward the alder opening without sealing the recognized road.

A final pulse exposes a small maker’s sign beneath the silt: three nested arcs crossed by a single line. It records alteration and direction, not ownership or command.

The seams fade to their steady blue. Mara has the route’s purpose and alteration clearly witnessed, while the dry channel remains open before her.

“I asorbe enough mystic energy to work the numbness out of my hand.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

The Newly Exposed Steps

Mara draws a measured thread of mystic energy from the blue-lit seams, guiding it through her wrist and into the two numb fingers.

Cold bites up her forearm as the current works through the boundary strain. The stiffness loosens, sensation returning in prickling waves to her hand.

The cost settles plainly: one reserve of prepared energy is spent, and the blue seams dim beneath the masonry before recovering their steady glow.

Mara

Mara

Sensation is restored. The crossing took more than it gave.

Mara flexes her fingers and feels the damp air, the rough stone, and the faint vibration of the channel beneath her palm without touching the marked seams.

The buried junction remains open ahead. Its nested arcs continue toward the altered marker and the ravine, while the southern road stays undisturbed above.

“I asorbe enough mystic energy to work the numbness out of my hand.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The restored sensation lets Mara read the blue seams more precisely. Their pulses divide into three rhythms: foundation, diverted water, and a newer guiding thread.

The newest thread bends away from the altered marker and continues beneath the ravine, where the dry channel widens into a chamber. Nothing in it carries a summons or claim.

Mara

Mara

The alteration reaches farther beneath the ravine than the surface marks show.

A faint vibration travels through the channel floor. Dust slips from the ceiling, revealing a narrow side passage behind a fallen foundation stone.

Within the opening, blue light outlines a second set of nested arcs, this one interrupted by a deliberate blank space. The old route continues beyond it.

The blank is not damage. It marks a refusal in the buried guidance, preserving a place where the route can be observed without directing anyone through.

Mara stands at the crossing with both ways visible: the channel toward the ravine, and the newly exposed passage leading beneath the altered marker.

“I inspect the blank before choosing a passage, I then sence how much necrotic energy is in the area.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Newly Exposed Steps

Mara studies the deliberate blank between the nested arcs, tracing its edges with perception rather than touch. The interruption is clean, shaped, and intentionally preserved.

The blank records refusal without breaking the route. It neither conceals a passage nor directs one, leaving the guidance observable while keeping its bearer and purpose unclaimed.

Mara

Mara

The refusal is part of the design, not damage.

Mara then senses through the chamber for necrotic energy. A thin residue clings to the older foundation, cold and dry, but no active current gathers in the passage.

The strongest trace lies beneath the ravine, where the newer guiding thread crosses the dry channel. It is faint, dispersed, and contained within the buried marks rather than spreading outward.

The area holds enough necrotic energy to preserve impressions and sustain the altered guidance, but not enough for a working, spirit, or hidden presence. The blank remains undisturbed.

Both passages stay open before Mara: the channel toward the ravine and the refusal-marked side passage beneath the altered marker. Nothing claims her choice.

“I follow the dry channel toward the ravine”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Mara follows the dry channel toward the ravine, stepping over pale silt and fragments of old masonry. Blue seams pulse faintly beneath the walls, guiding the buried course.

The passage slopes gradually downward, then widens where the channel passes beneath the old stones. Rootlets hang from the ceiling, carrying damp earth and the distant murmur of water.

Mara

Mara

The channel reaches the ravine below the recognized road.

Mara emerges into a low chamber beneath the ravine. A narrow stream crosses its far side, vanishing beneath a rock shelf toward the southern path, while the dry channel ends at the water’s edge.

Here the newer guiding thread is clearer. It crosses the chamber floor in blue-lit marks, bends beneath the stream, and continues toward the altered marker without touching the refusal-marked passage.

Above, faint daylight filters through cracks between the stones. The ravine is directly overhead, and the hidden route has delivered Mara to its lower course without resistance or claim.

Beyond the stream, a stone ledge bears the same three nested arcs and single crossing line. Fresh silt lies across part of the mark, showing that something recently passed through the chamber.
